East Lindsey Aviation History Trail (South) The trail begins at Boston and the route has been carefully planned so as to end there too. Route details between the different RAF bases. Section 1 Boston to RAF Coningsby From Boston, follow signs for the A17 towards Sleaford. At Hubberts Bridge Crossroads (next to a railway signal box, with markers indicating the distance to go) turn RIGHT and follow the sign posts for Coningsby. This road is the B1192, and you will need to follow it to New York - no joke, this one was here before the American one! At the crossroads in New York, just before the chapel on the left hand side, turn LEFT and follow the road along, round through the sharp right hand bend at Dogdyke, until you pass the RAF fuel dump on your left hand side. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight visitors' car park is on the LEFT. N.B. If you do not wish to visit the Flight but would rather spend a few minutes watching the more modern (and noisy) Typhoons, Harriers and Tornadoes, there are ample places to park up either in the spotter's car park on the Dogdyke road, in the car park for the BBMF visitor centre and a few outside the fence by the front of the BBMF hangar. However, please do NOT block the large emergency gates in the fence, as they are to be kept clear at all times. Also, please try to avoid parking on the road, as it creates a dangerous obstruction to other users of the narrow roads around the base. -

Several airfields are still operational and serving the modern day RAF while former airfields, museums and memorials are witness to the bravery of the men and women who served here in most turbulent times. Westminster Abbey Battle of Britain Tapestry In Westminster Abbey is a beautiful stained glass window which is dedicated to the pilots of Fighter Command, who paid the supreme sacrifice during the dark days of 1940 in World War II. That window is situated in the Royal Air Force Chapel, which is part of the Henry VII Chapel, and was the inspiration for the Battle of Britain Tapestry. WILLIAMS, CEDRIC WATCY : Squadron Leader Royal Air Force 17 Squadron. Date of Death: 25/08/1940: Service No: 26219 Page 1 of 57 ON 0UR DOORSTEP Cedric was born the 1st February 1910 at Ystalyfera in Glamorgan South Wales. His mother moved to Old Heath at Rowhedge, where for many years she played the organ in Saint Lawrence's. He joined the RAF in 1925, as an aircraft apprentice. Four years later for "outstanding ability & achievement" he was selected for a cadetship and Cedric entered the RAF at Cranwell College in September 1929. He graduated in July 1931 and joined 32 Squadron at Kenley. He was posted to 84 Squadron, 28th February 1933, serving at Shaibah, Iraq. He returned to the UK in February 1935 and was posted to 3rd Armament Training at Sutton Bridge. 30th March 1936 he joined the Staff at RAF Cranwell & 14th July 1938 was posted to the Directorate of Intelligence at the Air Ministry. -

A/C SERIAL NO. XW323 SECTION 2B INDIVIDUAL HISTORY BAC JET PROVOST T 5A XW323 /9166M MUSEUM ACCESSION NUMBER 1994/1344/A One of 110 Jet Provost T 5 aircraft ordered under contract no. KC/E/124/CB5(b) dated 29 July 1968; delivered to the RAF from September 1969, including the serial batch XW287 - XW336. 107, including XW323, were later upgraded to T5A standard. Constructor’s number EEP/JP/987? 11 Dec 70 Awaiting collection from British Aircraft Corporation, Warton. Delivered to RAF College Cranwell, Lincs the same day. When new the aircraft was used for the Pilot training of Flt Lt The Prince of Wales - codename ‘Golden Eagle’-at Cranwell as ‘Golden Eagle Two’; he held the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Two Jet Provosts (the other being XW322/1) were held at readiness for use by the Prince during his four-month course; he flew just over 92 hours in Jet Provosts, 23 ½ of them solo on the first Cranwell Graduate Entry course , from 8 March to 20 August 1971. Both had the Royal (Prince of Wales) Cypher on the engine intakes. They were locked under guard in a hangar each night with their own dedicated ground crew. All flights were over a specific airspace over Lincolnshire and monitored by a radar controller based at Northern Radar at RAF Lindholme. This year I must report the loss of; Frank Kristensen Henry Ricketts Alan Turner Frank from Denmark attended a couple of Reunions with the Danish Party who look after 630 Squadron Graves in Denmark. On a number of occasions they have hosted visits from the Association on their Remembrance Day. Henry, who hailed from Perth in Australia had over the years been to a number of Reunions. Alan I had contact with by phone and letter over the years. Gordon Lodge President’s Piece I am told by our hyper-efficient Association Secretary Gordon Lodge, that it is now 2017 and therefore time for me to put pen to paper/finger to keyboard and compose a few words for our latest Association Newsletter. Where does the time go? Frankly, nothing I say can match the wonderful news from OC 57 Squadron elsewhere in this Newsletter that the continued existence of 57 Squadron as an active flying squadron has been secured for the foreseeable future. That fantastic news means that, so soon after we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of 57 Squadron in such fine style, we can look forward to more anniversary celebrations in the future and to the enduring memory of the legacy and spirit of 630 Squadro2n remaining equally vibrant. -

Author : Alan Storr Alan was born in Melbourne Australia in 1921. He joined the RAAF in October 1941 and served in the Pacific theatre of war. He was an Observer and did a tour of operations with No 7 Squadron RAAF (Beauforts), and later was Flight Navigation Officer of No 201 Flight RAAF (Liberators). He was discharged Flight Lieutenant in February 1946. He has spent most of his Public Service working life in Canberra – first arriving in the National Capital in 1938. He held senior positions in the Department of Air (First Assistant Secretary) and the Department of Defence (Senior Assistant Secretary), and retired from the public service in 1975. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Melbourne University) and was a graduate of the Australian Staff College, ‘Manyung’, Mt Eliza, Victoria. He has been a volunteer at the Australian War Memorial for 21 years doing research into aircraft relics held at the AWM, and more recently research work into RAAF World War 2 fatalities. He has written and published eight books on RAAF fatalities in the eight RAAF Squadrons serving in RAF Bomber Command in WW2. -

Individual Object History Boulton Paul Defiant I N1671/8370M Museum Object Number 74/A/16 Feb 1938 Ordered as part of the second production order for 202 Defiant Mk I aircraft to contract 751867/37, serial numbers between N1535-N1812. Built by Boulton Paul at its Pendeford, Wolverhampton factory and fitted with a Merlin III engine. 07 Aug 40 Taken on RAF charge at No.6 MU Brize Norton. 17 Sep 40 To No. 307 Lwowski (Polish) Squadron, Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincs, with temperate land camouflage scheme. Given codes EW-D. Allocated to `A' Flight. No. 307 Squadron had formed 5 Sep 40 as the first – and only- Polish night fighter unit. The Squadron ORB records that the unit received four Defiants, including N1671, on the 17th. 02 Oct 40 Three Defiants from No. 307 Squadron, including N1671 were dispersed to Caistor, Lincs - a regular occurrence for the unit during its work-up phase. Caistor was the relief landing ground for Kirton-in-Lindsey. 27 Oct 40 N1671 and three other Defiants returned to Kirton-in-Lindsay from detachment to Caistor. 07 Nov 40 The unit moved to Jurby, Isle of Man for shipping protection operations over the Irish sea and other daylight patrols, with a detachment at Cranage. The units full complement of 16 Defiants flew from Kirton-in-Lindsey to Jurby on this date, including N1671. 15 Nov 40 The Squadron Commander, Squadron Leader, later Group Captain Tomlinson flew N1671 with Flying Officer Karwowski for air-ground firing practice - see file letter from Gp Capt Tomlinson 13 Dec 71. -
