East Lindsey Aviation History Trail (South) The trail begins at Boston and the route has been carefully planned so as to end there too. Route details between the different RAF bases. Section 1 Boston to RAF Coningsby From Boston, follow signs for the A17 towards Sleaford. At Hubberts Bridge Crossroads (next to a railway signal box, with markers indicating the distance to go) turn RIGHT and follow the sign posts for Coningsby. This road is the B1192, and you will need to follow it to New York - no joke, this one was here before the American one! At the crossroads in New York, just before the chapel on the left hand side, turn LEFT and follow the road along, round through the sharp right hand bend at Dogdyke, until you pass the RAF fuel dump on your left hand side. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight visitors' car park is on the LEFT. N.B. If you do not wish to visit the Flight but would rather spend a few minutes watching the more modern (and noisy) Typhoons, Harriers and Tornadoes, there are ample places to park up either in the spotter's car park on the Dogdyke road, in the car park for the BBMF visitor centre and a few outside the fence by the front of the BBMF hangar. However, please do NOT block the large emergency gates in the fence, as they are to be kept clear at all times. Also, please try to avoid parking on the road, as it creates a dangerous obstruction to other users of the narrow roads around the base. -

River Witham the Source of the 8Th Longest River Wholly in England Is
River Witham The source of the 8th longest river wholly in England is just outside the county, Lincolnshire, through which it follows almost all of a 132km course to the sea, which is shown on the map which accompanies Table Wi1 at the end of the document. Three kilometres west of the village of South Witham, on a minor road called Fosse Lane, a sign points west over a stile to a nature reserve. There, the borders of 3 counties, Lincolnshire, Rutland and Leicestershire meet. The reserve is called Cribb’s Meadow, named for a famous prize fighter of the early 19th century; at first sight a bizarre choice at such a location, though there is a rational explanation. It was known as Thistleton Gap when Tom Cribb had a victory here in a world championship boxing match against an American, Tom Molineaux, on 28th September 1811; presumably it was the only time he was near the place, as he was a Bristolian who lived much of his life in London. The organisers of bare-knuckle fights favoured venues at such meeting points of counties, which were distant from centres of population; they aimed to confuse Justices of the Peace who had a duty to interrupt the illegal contests. Even if the responsible Justices managed to attend and intervene, a contest might be restarted nearby, by slipping over the border into a different jurisdiction. In this fight, which bore little resemblance to the largely sanitised boxing matches of today, it is certain that heavy blows were landed, blood was drawn, and money changed hands, before Cribb won in 11 rounds; a relatively short fight, as it had taken him over 30 rounds to beat the same opponent at the end of the previous year to win his title. -

Westminster Abbey Battle of Britain Tapestry In Westminster Abbey is a beautiful stained glass window which is dedicated to the pilots of Fighter Command, who paid the supreme sacrifice during the dark days of 1940 in World War II. That window is situated in the Royal Air Force Chapel, which is part of the Henry VII Chapel, and was the inspiration for the Battle of Britain Tapestry. Date of Death: 25/08/1940: Service No: 26219 Page 1 of 57 ON 0UR DOORSTEP Cedric was born the 1st February 1910 at Ystalyfera in Glamorgan South Wales. His mother moved to Old Heath at Rowhedge, where for many years she played the organ in Saint Lawrence's. He joined the RAF in 1925, as an aircraft apprentice. Four years later for "outstanding ability & achievement" he was selected for a cadetship and Cedric entered the RAF at Cranwell College in September 1929. He graduated in July 1931 and joined 32 Squadron at Kenley. He was posted to 84 Squadron, 28th February 1933, serving at Shaibah, Iraq. He returned to the UK in February 1935 and was posted to 3rd Armament Training at Sutton Bridge. 30th March 1936 he joined the Staff at RAF Cranwell & 14th July 1938 was posted to the Directorate of Intelligence at the Air Ministry. -

KC/E/124/CB5(b) dated 29 July 1968; delivered to the RAF from September 1969, including the serial batch XW287 - XW336. 107, including XW323, were later upgraded to T5A standard. Constructor’s number EEP/JP/987? 11 Dec 70 Awaiting collection from British Aircraft Corporation, Warton. Delivered to RAF College Cranwell, Lincs the same day. When new the aircraft was used for the Pilot training of Flt Lt The Prince of Wales - codename ‘Golden Eagle’-at Cranwell as ‘Golden Eagle Two’; he held the rank of Flight Lieutenant. Two Jet Provosts (the other being XW322/1) were held at readiness for use by the Prince during his four-month course; he flew just over 92 hours in Jet Provosts, 23 ½ of them solo on the first Cranwell Graduate Entry course , from 8 March to 20 August 1971. Both had the Royal (Prince of Wales) Cypher on the engine intakes. They were locked under guard in a hangar each night with their own dedicated ground crew. All flights were over a specific airspace over Lincolnshire and monitored by a radar controller based at Northern Radar at RAF Lindholme.
