East Lindsey Aviation History Trail (South) The trail begins at Boston and the route has been carefully planned so as to end there too. Route details between the different RAF bases. Section 1 Boston to RAF Coningsby From Boston, follow signs for the A17 towards Sleaford. At Hubberts Bridge Crossroads (next to a railway signal box, with markers indicating the distance to go) turn RIGHT and follow the sign posts for Coningsby. This road is the B1192, and you will need to follow it to New York - no joke, this one was here before the American one! At the crossroads in New York, just before the chapel on the left hand side, turn LEFT and follow the road along, round through the sharp right hand bend at Dogdyke, until you pass the RAF fuel dump on your left hand side. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight visitors' car park is on the LEFT. N.B. If you do not wish to visit the Flight but would rather spend a few minutes watching the more modern (and noisy) Typhoons, Harriers and Tornadoes, there are ample places to park up either in the spotter's car park on the Dogdyke road, in the car park for the BBMF visitor centre and a few outside the fence by the front of the BBMF hangar. However, please do NOT block the large emergency gates in the fence, as they are to be kept clear at all times. Also, please try to avoid parking on the road, as it creates a dangerous obstruction to other users of the narrow roads around the base. -

The Noise and Vibration Division was tasked by to carry out a Noise Amelioration Scheme (Military) assessment of aircraft activity at RAF Coningsby. 2. RAF Coningsby is home to three Typhoon squadrons as well as 41(R) Test and Evaluation Squadron and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. 3. Average Daily Movement numbers were calculated from Air Traffic Control movement logs for the period Feb 11 to Jan 12. 4. Using the Federal Aviation Administration’s Integrated Noise Model, 16-hour LAeq noise contours were produced. These contours were reviewed by the Defence Safety and Environment Authority and administrative adjustments made to extend the noise contour in specific areas. 5. It is recommended that the administrative adjusted 72, 66 and 63 dB LAeq,16hr contours should be used as the basis for the Noise Amelioration Scheme (Military) at RAF Coningsby. -

He was an Observer and did a tour of operations with No 7 Squadron RAAF (Beauforts), and later was Flight Navigation Officer of No 201 Flight RAAF (Liberators). He was discharged Flight Lieutenant in February 1946. He has spent most of his Public Service working life in Canberra – first arriving in the National Capital in 1938. He held senior positions in the Department of Air (First Assistant Secretary) and the Department of Defence (Senior Assistant Secretary), and retired from the public service in 1975. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Melbourne University) and was a graduate of the Australian Staff College, ‘Manyung’, Mt Eliza, Victoria. He has been a volunteer at the Australian War Memorial for 21 years doing research into aircraft relics held at the AWM, and more recently research work into RAAF World War 2 fatalities. He has written and published eight books on RAAF fatalities in the eight RAAF Squadrons serving in RAF Bomber Command in WW2. -

Genus Case Study Wicks & Wilson C-Drive X Aperture Card Scanner The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfires, Lancasters and an aperture card scanner Not names you would normally expect to hear in the same phrase but there is a reason. A recent enquiry from a client led to the installation of a Wicks & Wilson C-Drive X Aperture Card Scanner at The Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAFBBMF), based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. So far, so understandable, but what have two of the most iconic aircrafts in RAF history to do with a 35mm aperture card scanner? RAF BBMF consists of a number of military aircraft restored and kept airworthy including Spitfires, Hurricane, Lancaster and Dakota. If you have seen them at British state occasions or at air shows across the United Kingdom and Europe, this is where they call home the rest of the time. Unsurprisingly it is a full time job for the BBMF technicians to maintain the aircraft. Obviously, computer aided drawings were not around when the planes were designed, so the original drawings were undertaken by good old-fashioned aeronautical drafting – evidently to great success in these planes. Like vast quantities of original drawings, they were subsequently committed to 35mm aperture card format for reduced storage. However with an increasing demand to remanufacture or repair old parts for the planes, access to information held on those drawings has become critical… – step forward the little C-Drive X. We are not going to suggest it shares the same heroic status as the planes that now surround it at RAF Coningsby but as the saying goes, the best things come in small packages and so it has proven with the scanner. -

C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself.
