Your Itinerary DAY 1 | LONDON - CAMBRIDGE After meeting in London, we’ll head straight to our first stop – the Imperial War Museum – before we move on to the charming city of Cambridge, where we’ll see the likes of the famous university and Bridge of Sighs on a walking tour. After a rich day of sightseeing, we’ll enjoy a group dinner together. Accommodation: The Gonville Hotel (or similar) MEALS: Dinner DAY 2 | CAMBRIDGE - COTON - WOODHALL SPA This morning we’ll pay our respects to fallen veterans at the American Cemetery and Memorial in Coton before exploring Duxford’s Imperial War Museum and the American Air Museum, where we’ll observe dramatic displays performed by original aircraft. After that comes one of our trip highlights: a nostalgic flight over Cambridge in a fully restored Dragon Rapide. Then: onwards to The Petwood Hotel, the home of the legendary Dambusters, where we’ll make ourselves at home for the next few nights. Accommodation: Petwood Hotel (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 3 | WOODHALL SPA - CONINGSBY - SPILSBY - TATTERSHALL - WOODHALL SPA Today we’ll visit RAF Coningsby before continuing to East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre – where we’ll see Just Jane, the famous Lancaster NX611, up close. In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre to learn more about the former airfield and the squadrons that were based there. Accommodation: Petwood Hotel (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast Dinner DAY 4 | WOODHALL SPA - SCAMPTON - CANWICK - LINCOLN - WOODHALL SPA On today’s agenda: included visits to RAF Scampton (the base of the Red Arrows), the notable Memorial Spire and Wall of Names, and the Chadwick Centre. Later, we’ll enjoy a tour of Lincoln’s Cathedral and Castle before returning to the Petwood Hotel for an evening of leisure time. Accommodation: Petwood Hotel (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 5 | WOODHALL SPA - COSFORD - LEAMINGTON SPA Today we’ll visit the award-winning RAF Museum Cosford, where we’ll have the chance to take a close look at the original bombers, before continuing to the uplifting National Memorial Arboretum. In the evening, we’ll move on to Leamington Spa – where a delicious dinner awaits. Accommodation: Mallory Court Hotel and Spa (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast Dinner DAY 6 | LEAMINGTON SPA- BLETCHLEY - WINCHESTER First today: a visit to Bletchley Park, the Victorian estate that was once the top-secret HQ of the WWII Codebreakers. After an insightful morning, the afternoon will see us touring the Swiss Garden and the Shuttleworth Collection – one of the most prestigious collections of aircraft and vehicles in the world – at Biggleswade. Winchester is where we’ll rest our heads tonight. Accommodation: The Winchester Hotel & Spa (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 7 | WICHESTER After a tour of the awe-inspiring Winchester Cathedral, the day will be yours to spend exploring historic sites (such as the Great Hall and Winchester College), visiting museums and galleries or tasting the local fare in one of the city’s excellent restaurants. Accommodation: The Winchester Hotel & Spa (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast DAY 8 | WINCHESTER - WAREHAM - PORTSMOUTH Today we’ll learn the history of armoured fighting vehicles on a guided tour of Bovington Tank Museum, before directing our attention to Portsmouth. Afterwards, we’ll continue to the D-Day Museum, where we’ll have the privilege of meeting an RAF veteran and hearing his personal wartime stories. Tonight, a farewell dinner is in order. Accommodation: Florence House Hotel (or similar) MEALS: Breakfast Dinner DAY 9 | PORTSMOUTH - LONDON Before we say goodbye, there’s still time to visit Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and Biggin Hill Hangar – where we’ll see six fully restored Spitfire aircraft.     Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum Newsletter No.16 - March 2014 100th Anniversary of World War 1 & 70th Anniversary of Arnhem Remembered Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum A Note from the Editor Here we are in March and the new season for the Museum will soon be upon us. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War and also the 70th anniversary of the battle for Arnhem. Both events touched Woodhall Spa, with the Petwood being used as a Rehabilitation Centre for soldiers in WW1 and several thousand Parachute troops being stationed in and around the village during the months leading up to Arnhem in 1944. The Museum will be mounting special exhibitions to commemorate both events and in addition a special day is being planned for September 6th. to mark the Arnhem anniversary - more of this on page 3 To help raise funds for the Arnhem Day our Chairman, Jackie Goodall, will be do a Parachute Jump strapped to a Red Devil. Turn to page 4 for more information on how to contribute. We will report on this brave endeavour in the next Newsletter. We take the opportunity in this issue to introduce our new Activities Manager, Kathy Holland, to you. She started work at the Museum in January and we all welcome her and wish her well in her endeavours. There are many activities planned for the coming year including the very popular summer family events organised by the Education Team, led by Gill Noble. As well as these activities, there are plenty of other events during the year, including the Annual Dinner on April 15th., which will feature an after dinner talk by Alec Gordon of The National Trust on the work of the Trust nationally and in Lincolnshire in particular.

    East Lindsey Aviation History Trail (South) The trail begins at Boston and the route has been carefully planned so as to end there too. Route details between the different RAF bases. Section 1 Boston to RAF Coningsby From Boston, follow signs for the A17 towards Sleaford. At Hubberts Bridge Crossroads (next to a railway signal box, with markers indicating the distance to go) turn RIGHT and follow the sign posts for Coningsby. This road is the B1192, and you will need to follow it to New York - no joke, this one was here before the American one! At the crossroads in New York, just before the chapel on the left hand side, turn LEFT and follow the road along, round through the sharp right hand bend at Dogdyke, until you pass the RAF fuel dump on your left hand side. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight visitors' car park is on the LEFT. N.B. If you do not wish to visit the Flight but would rather spend a few minutes watching the more modern (and noisy) Typhoons, Harriers and Tornadoes, there are ample places to park up either in the spotter's car park on the Dogdyke road, in the car park for the BBMF visitor centre and a few outside the fence by the front of the BBMF hangar. However, please do NOT block the large emergency gates in the fence, as they are to be kept clear at all times. Also, please try to avoid parking on the road, as it creates a dangerous obstruction to other users of the narrow roads around the base.

But by the tender age of 28 he had experienced more than many of us see in the whole of our lives. He was born during the First World War at Lansdowne, Spilsby Road, Horncastle, the fourth child of six and the eldest son. His father was an auctioneer and land agent and came from a family of factors or land agents who had started in Perthshire. His great grandfather, George Bell, had secured the post of resident land agent on the Revesby Estate in 1842 bringing his family to Lincolnshire. His quick open mind fostered an interest in a wide variety of subjects including, centrally, agriculture. It was his perseverance that kept Horncastle cattle market going (perhaps beyond its natural life).
