The Creative Artist: A Journal of Theatre and Media Studies, Vol 13, 2, 2017 MANDARIN CHINESE PINYIN: PRONUNCIATION, ORTHOGRAPHY AND TONE Sunny Ifeanyi Odinye, PhD Department of Igbo, African and Asian Studies Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pinyin is essential and most fundamental knowledge for all serious learners of Mandarin Chinese. If students are learning Mandarin Chinese, no matter if they are beginners or advanced learners, they should be aware of paramount importance of Pinyin. Good knowledge in Pinyin can greatly help students express themselves more clearly; it can also help them in achieving better listening and reading comprehension. Before learning how to read, write, or pronounce Chinese characters, students must learn pinyin first. This study aims at highlighting the importance of Pinyin and its usage in Mandarin for any students learning Mandarin Chinese. The research work adopts descriptive research method. The work is divided into introduction, body and conclusion. 1. INTRODUCTION Pinyin (spelled sounds) has vastly increased literacy throughout China and beyond; eased the classroom agonies of foreigners studying Mandarin Chinese; afforded the blind a way to read the language in Braille; facilitated the rapid entry of Chinese on computer keyboards and cell phones. "About one billion Chinese citizens have mastered pinyin, which plays an important role in both Chinese language education and international communication," said Wang Dengfeng, vice-chairman of the National Language Committee and director of language department of the Education Ministry. "Hanyu Pinyin not only belongs to China but also belongs to the world. It is now everywhere in our daily lives," Wang said, "Pinyin will continue playing an important role in the modernization of China." (Xinhua News, 2008). -

For more information visit www.intechopen.com Chapter Traditional Chinese Medicine: From Aqueous Extracts to Therapeutic Formulae Jinfan Wang, Astrid Sasse and Helen Sheridan Abstract Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is one of the most established systems of medicine in the world. The therapeutic formulae used in TCM are frequently derived from aqueous decoctions of single plants or complex multicomponent formulae. There are aspects of plant cultivation and preparation of decoction pieces that are unique to TCM. These include Daodi cultivation, which is associated with high quality medicinal plant material that is grown in a defined geographical area, and Paozhi processing where the decoction pieces can be treated with excipients and are processed, which may fundamentally change the nature of the chemical metabolites. Therefore, a single plant part, processed in a variety of different ways, can each create a unique medicine. The quality of TCM materials, their safety and therapeutic efficacy are of critical importance. The application of metabolomic and chemometric techniques to these complex and multicomponent medicines is of interest to understand the interrelationships between composition, synergy and therapeutic activity. -

Each one gives law to his children and to his wives. 1 ARISTOTLE INTRODUCTION ᆖ, the “Three-Character Classic”orڗThe San tzu ching Կ “Trimetrical Classic” (GILES, p. III) was for countless generations of East Asian schoolboys the authoritative introduction to literate culture. In Manchuria, Mongolia, Japan, Korea, Annam as well as in China proper it informed the education ideally, the education of a future mandarin wherever the administration acted according to the standards of Confucianism, as long as the kanjis2 were written with the brush. The San tzu ching had in East Asia the same function as for us, in the West, the “DONAT” (of Aelius Donatus, a grammarian of the fourth century A.D.). Till roughly 1900, as long as western boys were taught Latin effectively, they were taught the DONAT; and in the East, as long as the boys were to learn literary Chinese properly, they received their first initiation from the San tzu ching ... or from one of its precursors. Pinyin and Chinese Children’s Phonological Awareness by Xintian Du A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements For the degree of Master of Arts Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Ontario Institute of Studies in Education University of Toronto @Copyright by Xintian Du 2010 ABSTRACT Pinyin and Chinese Children’s Phonological Awareness Master of Arts 2010 Xintian Du Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning University of Toronto This paper critically reviewed the literature on the relationships between Pinyin and Chinese bilingual and monolingual children’s phonological awareness (PA) and identified areas of research worth of further investigation. As the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet providing pronunciation of the universal Chinese characters, Pinyin facilitates children’s early reading development. What research has found in English is that PA is a reliable indicator of later reading success and meta-linguistic training improves PA. In Chinese, a non-alphabetic language, there is also evidence that PA predicts reading in Chinese, which confirms the universality of PA’s role. However, research shows the uniqueness of each language: tonal awareness is stronger indicator in Chinese while phonemic awareness is stronger indicator in English. Moreover, Pinyin, the meta-linguistic training, has been found to improve PA in Chinese and reading in Chinese and possibly facilitate the cross-language transfer of PA from Chinese to English and vice versa. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am heartily thankful to my supervisors Becky Chen and Normand Labrie, whose guidance and support from the initial to the final level enabled me to develop a thorough understanding of the subject and eventually complete the thesis paper. -

HÀNWÉN AND TAIWANESE SUBJECTIVITIES: A GENEALOGY OF LANGUAGE POLICIES IN TAIWAN, 1895-1945 By Hsuan-Yi Huang A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Curriculum, Teaching, and Educational Policy—Doctor of Philosophy 2013 ABSTRACT HÀNWÉN AND TAIWANESE SUBJECTIVITIES: A GENEALOGY OF LANGUAGE POLICIES IN TAIWAN, 1895-1945 By Hsuan-Yi Huang This historical dissertation is a pedagogical project. In a critical and genealogical approach, inspired by Foucault’s genealogy and effective history and the new culture history of Sol Cohen and Hayden White, I hope pedagogically to raise awareness of the effect of history on shaping who we are and how we think about our self. I conceptualize such an historical approach as effective history as pedagogy, in which the purpose of history is to critically generate the pedagogical effects of history. This dissertation is a genealogical analysis of Taiwanese subjectivities under Japanese rule. Foucault’s theory of subjectivity, constituted by the four parts, substance of subjectivity, mode of subjectification, regimen of subjective practice, and telos of subjectification, served as a conceptual basis for my analysis of Taiwanese practices of the self-formation of a subject. Focusing on language policies in three historical events: the New Culture Movement in the 1920s, the Taiwanese Xiāngtǔ Literature Movement in the early 1930s, and the Japanization Movement during Wartime in 1937-1945, I analyzed discourses circulating within each event, particularly the possibilities/impossibilities created and shaped by discourses for Taiwanese subjectification practices. I illustrate discursive and subjectification practices that further shaped particular Taiwanese subjectivities in a particular event. -

A remake of a 1984 film, this iteration of The Karate Kid begins its imaginative battle over martial arts turf with English and Chinese titles at odds with one another. For English- speaking audiences, the title of the film promises a remake of the popular 1984 story of a displaced Italian American teenager (Ralph Macchio) trained by a Japanese American sensei (Pat Morita) to compete against the local karate bullies. However, the 2010 version has another identity competing with the first. Its Chinese title translates as Kung Fu Dream – Japanese culture, karate, and domestic American class and racial politics out of the picture. In this version, an African American youngster (Jaden Smith) moves to Beijing from Detroit and is taken under the wing of a drunken kung fu master (Jackie Chan) to battle a group of wu shu/san da villains. -

Political Science 15541 Chinese Political Thought Fall, 2007 Instructor: Peter Moody, 534 Flanner; MWF 9:00-10:00, TTh 2:00-3:00, and by appointment. REQUIREMENTS: 1. Attendance, completed readings, and participation in class discussion. 2. A set of writing assignments, brief essays on topics within the following categories: A “philological” analysis: By library research, find out and discuss the way in which any particular Chinese classic text of your choice came into being: when was it written? How much of it can be attributed to its supposed author? So forth. A comparative analysis of the ideas of one thinker (or set of thinkers) we study in class, putting the ideas into more general philosophical or political context. A close analysis of the ideas of one of the thinkers included in Chan's book, but not explicitly discussed in class, putting those ideas into the general context of the school of which they are a part and of Chinese thought generally. One analytic review of a book (a secondary work) on Chinese philosophy, thought, religion, or culture. There are some suggestions at the relevant dates below. One final writing assignment, requiring some outside research, in which the ideas of one of the thinkers or approaches we have discussed will be applied to a contemporary political, cultural, or moral issue of your choice. The required readings are found in a course packet, a general reader, A Source Book in Chinese Philosophy, by Wing-tsit Chan, and a traditional Chinese novel, Monkey. The books should be available in the bookstore, the course packet at LaFortune.
