David Martin-Jones KEYWORDS Ip Man, Deleuze, recollection-image, martial arts, physical memory, Chinese diaspora. ABSTRACT This article explores how Gilles Deleuze’s conceptualization of the flashback, as ‘recollection-image’, can assist our understanding of the rendering spectacular of physical memory in contemporary Chinese martial arts movies. The focus is a prominent flashback in the climactic duel in the kung fu movie, Yip Man/Ip Man (Yip, 2008). This recollection-image demonstrates how trained bodies in Chinese martial art movies suggest a slightly different understanding of time and affect from that which Deleuze formulated, based on his observation of US and European films. On textual, cultural and historical levels this article explores the usefulness of martial arts movies for developing our understanding of physicality in cinema, and for reconsidering Deleuze’s ideas in light of the Eurocentrism of some of his conclusions. -
The Douban Online Social Media Barometer and the Chinese Reception of Korean Popular Culture Flows1
. Volume 13, Issue 1 May 2016 The Douban online social media barometer and the Chinese reception of Korean popular culture flows1 Brian Yecies, Jie Yang, Aegyung Shim, Kai Soh & Matthew Berryman, University of Wollongong, Australia Abstract: Since its launch in 2005, the Chinese online social networking site Douban has become a key platform for creating and sharing user-generated content on a rising tide of global popular culture. Such content and its corresponding user data has become so prolific that Western media outlets are now using Douban a key barometer for gauging representative opinions and attitudes towards foreign content in China. However, a full range of tools for harvesting and analyzing Chinese-language datasets has yet to be explored in English. This article attempts to fill this gap by investigating the applicability of an analytical framework that can be used to study Chinese audiences’ response to a range of films through analysing comments on Douban. As a case study, the authors apply this framework to a representative sample of major Korean films made by a group of female writer–directors. Given that Korean cinema is increasingly popular with Chinese movie audiences, this study aims to test a “proof of concept” that can be applied more broadly to Korean and other country’s films. In turn, it is hoped that the framework developed here will be used to investigate much larger datasets across a greater range of popular culture materials originating outside China – materials that are making transnational connections with -

It explains how a range of international relationships and industry connections is contributing to a new ecology of expertise, which in turn is boosting the expansion of China’s domestic market and synergistically transforming the shape and style of Chinese cinema. Anonymous Classics: a List of Uniform Titles for Chinese Works
INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF LIBRARY ASSOCIATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS Cataloguing Section Anonymous classics a list of uniform titles for Chinese works 2011 INTRODUCTION As a reply to the International Conference on Cataloguing Principles, held at UNESCO, Paris, 1961, a first list of uniform titles for Anonymous classics was published by IFLA in 1964 1 with the assistance of UNESCO. This list, which represented a first attempt at the standardization of headings for titles at an international level, was regarded as temporary by its compiler Roger Pierrot. The project was to draw a list of the works from countries which had attended the International Conference: on the basis of the answers provided by 15 European and Asian countries, works of literature in 34 languages were listed in this publication. No later edition was issued for this working tool. In 1978, it was partly replaced by an edition limited to European literatures, revised and augmented by the addition of 8 literatures missing in the 1964 edition. It was planned by the International Office for UBC and coordinated by Rosemary C. Hewett 2. In the early 90s, these two documents were out of print and a mere reprint was not conceivable because of their incompleteness. During the 60th IFLA Conference in Havana in 1994, the Section on Cataloguing included in its action plan a new edition of Anonymous Classics, divided in several phases. The first phase was a revision of existing lists of European literatures, complemented by the addition of literatures missing in the 1978 edition. Published on the IFLA website in 2004, the new edition of Anonymous classics : a list of uniform headings for European literatures includes literatures in 28 languages of the European continent and is completed by definitions of the works and a bibliography for each literature. -
