  • The Future of South African Coal: Market, Investment, and Policy Challenges
PROGRAM ON ENERGY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT Working Paper #100 January 2011 THE FUTURE OF SOUTH AFRICAN COAL: MARKET, INVESTMENT, AND POLICY CHALLENGES ANTON EBERHARD FREEMAN SPOGLI INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES FREEMAN SPOGLI INSTITUTE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES About the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development The Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD) is an international, interdisciplinary program that studies how institutions shape patterns of energy production and use, in turn affecting human welfare and environmental quality. Economic and political incentives and pre-existing legal frameworks and regulatory processes all play crucial roles in determining what technologies and policies are chosen to address current and future energy and environmental challenges. PESD research examines issues including: 1) effective policies for addressing climate change, 2) the role of national oil companies in the world oil market, 3) the emerging global coal market, 4) the world natural gas market with a focus on the impact of unconventional sources, 5) business models for carbon capture and storage, 6) adaptation of wholesale electricity markets to support a low-carbon future, 7) global power sector reform, and 8) how modern energy services can be supplied sustainably to the world’s poorest regions. The Program is part of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University. PESD gratefully acknowledges substantial core funding from BP and EPRI. • Remembering Ahmed Kathrada, South Africa&
Remembering Ahmed Kathrada, South Africa’s National Liberation Icon Former political prisoner served time for political work alongside Nelson Mandela and others By Abayomi Azikiwe Region: sub-Saharan Africa Global Research, March 31, 2017 Theme: History, Police State & Civil Rights, Poverty & Social Inequality Funeral services were held on March 29 for Ahmed Mohamed “Kathy” Kathrada, a longtime member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and the African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa. Kathrada died at the age of 87 after undergoing neurosurgery. His memorial was attended by hundreds of family members and friends who paid tribute to the veteran of the decades- long national liberation struggle that brought the ANC to power in 1994. Born on August 21, 1929 to Indian immigrant parents living in the Western Transvaal (now the North West Province), Kathrada was subjected to discriminatory practices of the racist system then dominated by the British with the Boers playing a supplementary role. Coming from the Indian population in the settler-colonial state of the former Union of South Africa, Kathrada played an instrumental role in forming coalitions among the oppressed national groups across the country during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1941, at the age of 12, he joined the Young Communist League, an affiliate of the Communist Party of South Africa (CPSA). He was heavily influenced byDr. Yusuf Dadoo, a leading member of the Indian Congress movement and the Communist Party. Dadoo was an important figure in the Non-European United Front (NEUF) which initially opposed African and Indian involvement in the military services during the early phase of World War II.

The purpose of this Atmospheric Impact Report (AIR) is to assess the impact of the grace period of 37 days per year requested by Eskom from the particulate emission limit stipulated in Duvha’s Atmospheric Emission Licence for human health and the environment. Two operational scenarios are assessed to determine the effect of the grace period for Duvha Power Station. The application for the grace period considers PM10 emissions only. The two scenarios are: Scenario 1: Current particulate emission limits stipulated in the Atmospheric Emission Licence to assess the relative contribution to ambient PM10 concentrations near the Duvha Power Station.

Forward to Freedom: Women and Apartheid in South Africa JULY, 1985-_._--,....-...- The ugly face of apartheid is once again on the front page ofU.S. newspap ers. It has been put there by the biggest crackdown by the South Africa regime since Soweto, and the subsequent wave ofprotests and arrests at embassies and on campuses across this country. At the same time, Reagan has continued to push his colaborationist policy of"con structive engagement." Reagan's ease with the racist South African regime comes as no surprise. Many of apar theid's features bear an uncanny resem blance to the history ofwomen of color in the U.S.-ofnative people kicked off their land, of slavery, and the abuse of migrant labor. Itis critical, now more than ever, that progressive women in the U.S. seize every opportunity to voice our opposi tion to apartheid. Itis up to us to educate ourselves and others about apartheid's deadly consequences for South African women, and stop the U.S. from banking on apartheid.
