This research, however, is based for the most part on primary sources, specifically on the records declassified in the United States in 2007 as a consequence of the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act. The majority of the historiography on this topic either predates or neglects these records. The study of covert operations inside the Iron Curtain during the early Cold War, sponsored by Western states using émigré agents, usually ends with the conclusion that these operations were a failure, both in operational terms and from the point of view of the intelligence gathered. -

Erich Mercker and “Technical Subjects”: Industrial Painting in the Eras of Weimar and Nazi Germany
H-Labor-Arts Erich Mercker and “Technical Subjects”: Industrial Painting in the Eras of Weimar and Nazi Germany Discussion published by Patrick Jung on Saturday, October 7, 2017 (Copyright 2008, Society of Industrial Archeology and reprinted with permission) From the author: This article was published earlier in Industrial Archaeology: The Journal of the Society for Industrial Archeology, vol. 34, nos. 1 & 2. It is reproduced here on H-Labor Arts to make it available to a wider audience. I wrote this article while I was in the midst of finishing a book-length manuscript on Erich Mercker, who was, undoubtedly, one of the top industrial artists in Germany from 1919 to 1945. He and his contemporaries (e.g., Fritz Gärtner, Franz Gerwin, Ria Picco-Rückert, Leonhard Sandrock, and Richard Gessner) constituted a school of artists who I have provisionally labeled the “Heroic School” of German industrial art from 1919 to 1945. The Grohmann Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has paintings produced by virtually all of these artists. It also has more than 90 paintings by Erich Mercker, more than any other art museum in the world. Thus, it is fitting this article should appear on the H-Labor Arts site titled “From the Grohmann….” I also hope this essay will spur more research into Mercker and his “Heroic School” contemporaries, all of whom produced some of the most stunning examples of industrial art during the course of the early twentieth century. Those interested in reading the full-length biography on Erich Mercker (for which this article paved the way) should contact the Grohmann Museum at [email protected]. -

'Owned' Vatican Guilt for the Church's Role in the Holocaust?
Studies in Christian-Jewish Relations Volume 4 (2009): Madigan CP 1-18 CONFERENCE PROCEEDING Has the Papacy ‘Owned’ Vatican Guilt for the Church’s Role in the Holocaust? Kevin Madigan Harvard Divinity School Plenary presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Council of Centers on Christian-Jewish Relations November 1, 2009, Florida State University, Boca Raton, Florida Given my reflections in this presentation, it is perhaps appropriate to begin with a confession. What I have written on the subject of the papacy and the Shoah in the past was marked by a confidence and even self-righteousness that I now find embarrassing and even appalling. (Incidentally, this observation about self-righteousness would apply all the more, I am afraid, to those defenders of the wartime pope.) In any case, I will try and smother those unfortunate qualities in my presentation. Let me hasten to underline that, by and large, I do not wish to retract conclusions I have reached, which, in preparation for this presentation, have not essentially changed. But I have come to perceive much more clearly the need for humility in rendering judgment, even harsh judgment, on the Catholic actors, especially the leading Catholic actors of the period. As José Sanchez, with whose conclusions in his book on understanding the controversy surrounding the wartime pope I otherwise largely disagree, has rightly pointed out, “it is easy to second guess after the events.”1 This somewhat uninflected observation means, I take it, that, in the case of the Holy See and the Holocaust, the calculus of whether to speak or to act was reached in the cauldron of a savage world war, wrought in the matrix of competing interests and complicated by uncertainty as to whether acting or speaking would result in relief for or reprisal. -

UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF LABOR OFFICE OF ADMINISTRATIVE LAW JUDGES BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS Issue Date: 12 July 2016 ALJ NO: 2014-SPA-00004 In the Matter of JOHN R. LOFTUS, Complainant, v. HORIZON LINES, INC., Respondent, and MATSON ALASKA, INC., Successor-in-Interest. Before: Jonathan C. Calianos, Administrative Law Judge Appearances: Charles C. Goetsch, Esq., Charles C. Geotsch Law Offices, LLC, New Haven, Connecticut, for the Complainant Kevin S. Joyner, Esq., Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C., Raleigh, North Carolina, for the Respondent DECISION AND ORDER AWARDING DAMAGES I. Statement of the Case This proceeding arises under the whistleblower protection provisions of the Seaman's Protection Act ("SPA"), 46 U.S.C. § 2114(a), as amended by Section 611 of the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010, P.L 111-281, and as implemented by 29 C.F.R. § 1986. On June 20, 2013, John Loftus ("Loftus" or "Complainant") filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration ("OSHA") alleging his employer, Horizon Lines, Inc. ("Horizon"), unlawfully retaliated against him. Specifically, Loftus alleges Horizon constructively discharged him for reporting to the United States Coast Guard ("USCG") and its agent, the American Bureau of Shipping ("ABS"), what he believed to be violations of maritime safety law and regulations on the ship he worked as Master. On August 6, 2014, OSHA's Assistant Regional Administrator issued an order dismissing Loftus's complaint on behalf of the Secretary of Labor ("Secretary") concluding a prior arbitration proceeding concerning the same allegations correctly resulted in Horizon's favor. -

Remembering the Holocaust
REMEMBERING THE HOLOCAUST John J. Loftus* My name is John Loftus. It is probably kind of silly to have an Irish-Catholic as president of the Holocaust Museum.1 A lot of us wonder why we even have a Holocaust Museum for Jews. Every ethnic group has genocide. What was the largest number of people killed? During the middle passage of slavery, tens of millions of Africans died during the slave trade. What ethnic group had the highest percentage of their people killed? It was not the Jews; it was the Armenians. One out of every three Armenians in the world died in Turkish deportations in World War I. How about an Irish Museum? The population of Ireland went from eight million to five million. How about a museum for the Native Americans? More than 700 tribes completely disappeared several centuries ago. They were just murdered. The genocide against the Jews was terrible, but more terrible than I realized. When I first became involved, I discovered that there was something critically different from all the other genocides. Murder was just a means to an end. Nobody wanted to kill all the Africans; they were valuable property. Instead, they wanted to keep them as slaves. Even the Turks did not want to kill all the Arme- nians; they just wanted the land back. People did not want to * © John J. Loftus, 2000. All rights reserved. President, Florida Holocaust Museum. Title: The Persistence of Elites and the Legacy of LG. Farben, A.G .. On a massive scale, German business elites linked their professional ambitions to the affairs of the Nazi State. By 1937, the chemical giant, l.G. Farben, became completely "Nazified" and provided Hitler with materials which were essential to conduct war.
