K. NARAYAN was born on October 10, 1906, in Madras, South India, and educated there and at Maharaja’s College in Mysore. His first novel, Swami and Friends (1935), and its successor, The Bachelor of Arts (1937), are both set in the fictional territory of Malgudi, of which John Updike wrote, “Few writers since Dickens can match the effect of colorful teeming that Narayan’s fictional city of Malgudi conveys; its population is as sharply chiseled as a temple frieze, and as endless, with always, one feels, more characters round the corner.” Narayan wrote many more novels set in Malgudi, including The English Teacher (1945), The Financial Expert (1952), and The Guide (1958), which won him the Sahitya Akademi (India’s National Academy of Letters) Award, his country’s highest honor. His collections of short fiction include A Horse and Two Goats, Malgudi Days, and Under the Banyan Tree. Graham Greene, Narayan’s friend and literary champion, said, “He has offered me a second home. Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks. -

CHAPTER THREE Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Hanuman in RAMAYANA Year II Chapter 3-RAMAYANA THE RAMAYANA Introduction Valmiki is known as Adi Kabi, the first poet. He wrote an epic in Sanskrit, the Ramayana, which depicts the life of Rama, the hero of the story. Sage Narada narrated the story of Rama to Valmiki. Ramayana is divided into the following: o Balakanda (Book of Youth) - Boyhood of Rama, o Ayodhya Kanda (Book of Ayodhya) - Life in Ayodhya after Rama and Sita’s wedding, o Aranya Kanda (Book of Forest) – Rama’s forest life and abduction of Sita by Ravana, o Kishkindha Kanda (Book of Holy Monkey Empire) – Rama’s stay in Kishkindha after meeting Hanuman and Sugriva, o Sundara Kanda (Book of Beauty) – Hanuman’s Prank-locating Sita in Ashoka grove, and o Yuddha Kanda (Book of War) – Rama’s victory over Ravana in the war and Rama’s coronation. The period after coronation of Rama is considered in the last book - Uttara Kanda. The feature story Dasaratha was the king of Kosala, an ancient kingdom that was located in present day Uttar Pradesh. Ayodhya was its capital- located on the banks of the river Sarayu. Dasaratha was loved by one and all. His subjects were happy and his kingdom was prosperous. Even though Dasaratha had everything that he desired, he was very sad at heart; he had no children. During the same time, there lived a powerful Rakshasa (demon) king in the island of Sri Lanka (Ceylon), located just south of India. He was called Ravana. He had ten heads. -

8. The Supreme Devotion of Vib- hishana When divine feelings do not surge in the heart, Man becomes infected with two flaws. He conceals his countless blunders, and He criticises even minor mistakes of others. Embodiments of Love, The portraits of two personalities are very strik- ing in the Ramayana. They are those of Sugriva and Vibhishana. Vibhishana went in quest of Rama, while Rama Himself went in search of Sugriva. Sugriva real- ised Rama’s greatness and goodness only after meet- ing Him, while Vibhishana knew of Rama’s excellence even before he met Him. The Kurukshetra war lasted for eighteen days, but the war between Rama and Ravana lasted for sev- enty-five days. Though the warfare, in a physical sense, lasted for seventy-five days at Lanka, the inner war between Rama and Ravana, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, truth and untruth, and righteousness and unrighteousness is being fought endlessly in the hu- man heart. No one can tell for certain when the conflict and the clash between the positive and the negative forces will come to an end. It is not possible for everyone to understand Di- vinity. The Rescue of Sita Rama and Sita lived happily in a cottage in the forest for many years. One day, when Rama was out hunting. Sita took pity on a poor old holy man and invited him into their home. Too late, Sita realised her mistake, for the old man was the demon king Ravana in disguise. He bundled Sita into his chariot and flew her back to his kingdom on the island of Lanka. Rama searched the forest for his wife for days, but with no success. At last, in desperation, he went to the monkey king for help. The monkey general, Hanuman, was entrusted with searching Lanka to find Sita. But he could not find her anywhere. "Show me the way, Vishnu." Hanuman prayed, closing his eyes. When he opened them, he saw a light glowing among some trees. Hanuman leapt towards it. "Sita!" he exclaimed. "Rama has sent me to find you." Sita's hair was tangled and her clothes hung about her in tatters. She was sick with grief and despair. "Why has it taken Rama so long to find me?" asked Sita, sadly. She handed Hanuman a jewel. "This will prove you met me. Tell Rama if he does not come soon. I will be dead." Hanuman's fur glowed like a flame. He was furious with Sita's captor, Ravana. He said goodbye to Sita. And as a warning to Ravana, destroyed as much of Lanka as he could. "How dare this monkey attack us!" Ravana thundered, releasing 80,000 warrior demons against Hanuman. -

EFFECT OF RAMAYANA ON VARIOUS CULTURES AND CIVILISATIONS Dr. Gauri Mahulikar INTRODUCTION Ramayana is the fountain source of a great tradition of literature, culture, religion; not only in India, but in the islands , regions and countries as far as in Pacific ocean as well. There are two main streams which flowed from India, the birth place of the Ramayana; one to the South East Asia (SEA) and the other to the western countries, representing the cultural and literary aspects respectively. This paper aims to highlight the cultural influence mainly and as such the SEA would be the chief point. "Few works of literature produced in any place at any time have been as popular, influential, imitated and successful as the great and ancient Sanskrit epic poem, the Ramayana", says Robert Goldman.1 Though India is the home land of the Ramayana, it now belongs to the entire world and is a unique, social, cultural, spiritual, philosophical and literary treasure of the mankind. Differences in the ideological, political and religious setup of the countries influenced by the Ramayana, have never been a hindrance in the progress and popularity of the epic. The regions that have come under the sway of this epic constitute mainly the SEA countries like Cambodia, Indonesia, Java, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The effect is of two types: (a) Language and literature, (b) Art and Architecture. LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE An exhaustive list of the translations of the Ramayana in various languages, from Arabic to Uzbec, and papers, research work done on Ramayana, that is readily available to us,2 is truly amazing. -

“Om Sri Lakshmi Narashimhan Nahama” Valmiki Ramayana – Yuddha Kanda – Chapter 73 CHAPTER 73 Indrajit Shoots a Brahmastra at Rama and Lakshmana Those rakshasas who survived hastily reported to Ravana that Devantaka, Trishira, Atikaya and others had been killed. Hearing this sudden message of death, the king’s eyes filled with tears. Thinking about the death of his sons and the horrible slaughter of his brothers, the king became very contemplative. When Indrajit saw how his father was miserable and drowning in an ocean of grief, he spoke the following words: “O lord of the rakshasas, you should not despair while Indrajit is alive! Indeed, no one is able to survive when struck by my arrows in combat. Today see Rama and Lakshmana lying dead on the ground, Their bodies pierced, scattered and completely covered by my arrows! Hear my vow strengthened by great determination, manliness and destiny: I shall this very day overcome Rama and Lakshmana with my arrows which are always effective! Today Indra, Yamaraja, Vishnu, Rudra, the saadhyas, Agni, Chandra and Surya will witness my immeasurable prowess as they did the formidable prowess of Vishnu in the sacrificial arena of Maharaja Bali!” After saying this and taking leave of Ravana, the enemy of Indra, Indrajit mounted the chariot which was as swift as the wind, drawn by asses and equipped with weapons. Sitting down in the chariot, the glorious Indrajit, the crusher of enemies, suddenly departed for the battlefield. Extremely excited, many powerful rakshasas carrying excellent bows followed the great prince. Some rakshasas rode on elephants, some on fine steeds, tigers, scorpions, cats, asses, camels, snakes, boars, lions, jackals as big as hills, crows, swans and peacocks.
