Don Llewellyn Photograph Competition At the beginning of January, the Admin of the Page on Facebook ran a second photo competition to replace the Group photograph on the Community page and the Pentyrch and Creigiau Hub page. We had some beautiful pictures of the village and surrounding countryside entered by children and adults. The competition was open for a week and was voted on by points awarded for the number of likes and hearts. It was quite close between most popular pictures, but the eventual winner was Richard Lloyd with his picture “Top of the Garth – Perfect Sunrise. This is now the Group Picture on the Community Page. Second place went to Craig Macdonald with his picture “The Garth – Frosty Heart”, which is now the Group Picture on the Hub page.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the passing recently of Don Llewellyn and our condolences go to his wife Avril and his children Ceri and Gwynfor. Don has been a great friend to the Community Council over many years. He was always the one to whom the Council would turn with any matters of History. He regularly contributed to the Community Link and it was Don who wrote almost all of the Centenary Link we published to mark the 100 years of the Council as well as providing nearly all the photos. The museum in our offices was inspired by Don. Last year the Council were delighted to confer him as an Honorary Freeman of Pentyrch. All the photographs that were entered can be viewed on Don will be missed by our staff and Councillors who Pentyrch Community Page by clicking on the magnifying always welcomed his visits to the Council office. The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that provides a snapshot of households in England and Wales, helping to plan and fund public services. Everyone across England and Wales will be asked to take part and the information people give will decide how services are planned and funded. Ultimately, it ensures funds are invested in emergency services, health care, school places and other vital services. Pete Benton, Director of Census and Survey Operations, said: “The census engagement managers and community advisers we have appointed have a critical role in making sure everyone understands why the census is important and making sure all households across England and Wales know why it is important to take part and how to get the help they need.” For the first time, the census will be run primarily online, making it easy for most people to complete the questionnaire on any device – whether that be a computer, a mobile phone or a tablet. We wanted to reassure everyone that all census staff will operate in line with the Government’s latest Covid-19 guidance. The 2021 Census will include a new question on veterans of the UK Armed Forces, as well as voluntary questions, for those aged 16 and over, on sexual orientation and gender identity. The census will be held on 21 March 2021. While results will be available the following year, all personal records will be locked away for 100 years and kept safe for future generations. It’s children’s way of supporting their own health and well-being. These top tips aim to help parents to support their children’s play during times of stress. Playing is the most natural and enjoyable way for children keep well and be happy. It can contribute to improved well-being for everyone during times of uncertainty. Playing is something that children do whenever they have the chance. It is their way of supporting their own health and well-being. The onset of the coronavirus means we are having to deal with uncertainties and unknowns very quickly and with little preparation. Being at home for long periods of time and not being able to see friends and visit familiar places is confusing. Despite the current pandemic, children will still need and want to play. Playing helps children manage their emotions and make sense of their situation. During times of uncertainty it:  helps to give children a feeling of normality and joy during an experience of loss, isolation and trauma  helps children to overcome emotional pain and regain control over their lives  helps children make meaning of what has happened to them, and enable them to experience fun and enjoyment  offers children an opportunity to explore their own creativity. Even if children may sometimes seem distressed, play is the healthy way for children to come to terms with news and it provides parents and carers with an insight as to how they are feeling. To help parents to support children’s play during times of stress we have pulled together a list of top tips. Healthy children who are suitably dressed don’t need to Many of us remember how much we enjoyed playing let a bit of Welsh rain stop them playing outdoors. outdoors when we were children. It gives children the chance to see what it’s like to change their environment – digging, making large dens, making mud pies or castles. Every child benefits from the opportunity to play, and weather and cost don’t need to get in the way. 28 CREIGIAU WI’S 0 ඍකඋඐඍඌඡ: ඉඟක CREIGIAU TENNIS CLUB YEAR TO REMEMBER! 29 The British countryside has been under extreme pressure since the first lockdown due to Covid19. Whereas we welcome the respectful and caring visitors to our beautiful countryside and workplace, there are some unfortunately not so caring, and have no idea how the countryside works and think that it is a playground for all to treat as such!!! The local inhabitants are very protective of our lovely Garth Mountain, quite rightly so, and have been appalled by the explosion of visitors from outside the village blocking roads and gateways with their parked cars. 32 Pentyrch Open Gardens 3rd & 4th July 2021 Yes, we are planning to open our gardens this year in a Covid –19 safe way providing the regulations allow us to. There will also be a virtual Open Gardens as we had last year as this allowed visitors from as far away as the USA to take a wander around the gardens. It also meant we were able to make a donation to the Welsh Air Ambulance of £1200 through our Just Giving page and we are continuing to support them again this year. A pop-up plant sale will continue as plants become ready at Sue & Martin’s house in Cefn Bychan so keep an eye on the community hub on Facebook to see when and what is available. If you take a walk around the village green area you can see that the snowdrops we planted are out and also spreading over the green area. This is heartening to see as whatever is wrong with our world just as the sun rises and sets each day mother nature continues to do her work. I think we all have learned to appreciate the small things in life this past year. If you would like to open your garden this year please contact Chris & Helen 2 Penmaes 07787890284 and we will add you to the list. We hope to have new gardens this year as the lockdown last year seems to have generated more Killing them with Kindness interest in our gardens. Happy Gardening!

During lockdown this has become a bigger problem than ever, with well-meaning people going for walks and thinking they are being kind in feeding horses. Whilst horses are big, strong animals, they have very delicate digestive systems and can become ill and even die from being fed by the public.  Horses cannot be sick, so once it is in, it has to pass right through.  Grass cuttings begin to ferment as soon as they are cut and if eaten by a horse, can poison them and lead to death.  Carrots and fruit cut to the wrong size and shape can get lodged in their windpipes and cause them to suffocate. This really is a serious problem and the more people who understand and share this information, the fewer tragedies will happen going forward.

33 BLACK MINERS IN SOUTH WALES Some of you may have seen historian Norma Gregory on TV. She is researching black mining history in South Wales. We interacted recently so I set about researching. First call was to Arthur Welsby. He remembered a black family as licensees of the Gwaelod pub. Next, I spoke with the late Don Llewellyn. He remembered the family, saying David Peters, a former boxer, was involved in local youth sport, and had set-up a boxing room at The Gwaelod. Next stop was Carmen Hughes. As a child, she knew Dai Peters when he was living with his family in Pantgwynlais, landlords of the old Tongwynlais pub. Carmen has good memories of the family - and other famous boxers who came to the Peters’ pub. Newspaper archives have many reference to Dai, In 1909, Dave Peters, from a champion, fighting for big purses. Treorchy, knocked out Yorkshire Carmen says he was a gentle man - -born Merthyr fighter James he taught her tap and soft shoe 'Tiger' Smith at Mountain Ash to shuffle! Everyone liked the family reclaim the Welsh middleweight Census research came up with more title. information: David Peters was born in 1876. A young man, initially a miner, he is listed as a brewery traveller married to Lillian (listed as a licensed victualler). Children of the marriage were Ivor David (1902),John Thomas (1905), Arthur Tyndhurst (1907) and Edna Elizabeth. Now the interesting bit! One of the miners killed in the Lan disaster was William Peters. Census research shows he was the brother of Thomas Peters, father of David Peters. They had left the West Indies together around 1860. Will Peters came as a marine stoker, married a local girl and stayed! He and his wife Ann lived at 1 Garth Street, in Taffs Well. He is the earliest located black miner in South Wales, but lies in an umarked grave in Groeswen. Norma Procter

Creigiau Companions Who would have thought that we would still be in lockdown, a year after the covid19 first became a troublesome addition to our lives? But there it is, it is still with us and likely to be for years to come, and we, as some of the elderly brethren of our community, must continue to use the patience developed over so many years to combat the demands of isolation. By the time you read this, I suspect that all members of Companions will have received their first vaccination, that should set us on our way to some semblance of the normality we remember. I have no doubt that all our members are missing the comradeship and the enjoyment of our meetings. Once we are able to meet again, we will endeavour to set up a diary of interesting and entertaining speakers and events. That will, of course, take some time to organise, so the first few meetings could well have a flavour of DIY. But fear not! You will be able to catch up on all the exciting things your friends have done in the extended lockdown period: gardening, crocheting, decorating, reading, knitting, watching TV, writing a book, using zoom, cooking specialities, walking, climbing mountains, waving to grandchildren on a digital gadget. So many skills that have been lying dormant over so many years! Stay Safe, everyone, have the vaccine, and we’ll meet again, we do know where, but we don’t know when, but hopefully, soon. 36 PENTYRCH TENNIS CLUB After Andy Murray won the Wimbledon Tournament a few years ago it was envisaged that this would encourage many to buy a racket to try out or restart playing tennis. – but the increase in tennis club membership in the UK turned out to be very small.
