Assistant Professor (Sr. Gr.) and Research Guide Department of English and Languages Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kochi Campus, India Abstract: This рарer fосuses on transphobia and how the character Marci Wise in When they see us lie victim to transphobia. Transphobia comes from people harassing or discriminating transgender mentally and physically because of the fact that they are uncomfortable or scared with their gender identities. For these people, or transphobes, any gender other than a cis-male of cis-female is wild and out of their imaginations. It has been found that transphobia can even create discrimination towards transgendered people in many ways of them being denied of jobs loans, housing, or health care just because of the fact that their gender identity is not matching up to the norms. It does not help the fact that transgenders are always on the look out for getting attacked, much like what happened to Korey Wise's sister, Marci wise in When They See Us. Some of the mental health issues that transgenders in common faces are paranoia, living in constant fear, isolation, depression, self hate, hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, and self disgust. As times goes on, the person would feel sad; disconnected from everything and everyone, an emptiness began to settle in their mind. In the fourth episode of When They See us, the viewers get a glimpse into the life of Korea Wise's transgender sister, Marci Wise. -

DIGITAL ART AND FEMINISM: A SURREAL RELATIONSHIP Anne Swartz 10 DIGITAL ART AND FEMINISM: A SURREAL RELATIONSHIP Anne Swartz Many of the images in this exhibition reveal similar interests, themes, and aesthetics to those seen in feminist Art.1 The artists— (PLOLD)RUVWUHXWHU-HQQLIHU+DOO&ODXGLD+DUW<DHO.DQDUHN-HDQHWWH/RXLH5DQX0XNKHUMHH0DU\%DWHV1HXEDXHU0DULH Sivak, Camille Utterback, Adrianne Wortzel, and Janet Zweig—rely on technology as a tool to explore geopolitics, geological phenomenon, obsolete media, data streams and sets, illusion, shifting identities, phantasmagorias, eroticism, bodies, landscapes, geography, and memory. They are not afraid to confront assumptions or propaganda, even challenging conventions and traditions. They show us diverse, alternate domains and generate narratives of augmented worlds. Common to their artworks is the surreal, employed innovatively and underscored by the radical politics of feminism to change society in order to advance it. It is a kind of new romanticism where the real is meshed with fantasy so that the boundaries between the two dissolve. These artists have created pieces that require the viewer’s time; scanning and experiencing the entirety of their respective works over time transports one to their wild and imagined realms. It is easy to lose one’s bearings with these works because they rely upon mysterious disorientation to the viewer’s prosaic and commonplace experiences. It is a situation that is wholly based on the personal, which has been one of the cornerstone themes of feminist art. Digital art has an inherent feminist issues to it. Artist Mary Bates Neubauer termed the “new macho challenge for this generation RIZRPHQ>LV@GLJLWDOWHFKQRORJ\>EHFDXVH@WKH¿HOGLVVWLOOGRPLQDWHGE\PHQ´2 Utilizing technology to make art is, interestingly enough, one of the aspects of the programming world’s fascination with digital art.3 For the artists in this exhibition, digital technologies are ways to express content that is gender related. -

Stages of Emotion: Shakespeare, Performance, and Affect in Modern Anglo-American Film and Theatre Emily Lang Madison Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2019 Emily Lang Madison All Rights Reserved Abstract Stages of Emotion: Shakespeare, Performance, and Affect in Modern Anglo-American Film and Theatre Emily Lang Madison This dissertation makes a case for the Shakespearean stage in the modern Anglo- American tradition as a distinctive laboratory for producing and navigating theories of emotion. The dissertation brings together Shakespeare performance studies and the newer fields of the history of emotions and cultural emotion studies, arguing that Shakespeare’s enduring status as the playwright of human emotion makes the plays in performance critical sites of discourse about human emotion. More specifically, the dissertation charts how, since the late nineteenth century, Shakespeare performance has been implicated in an effort to understand emotion as it defines and relates to the “human” subject. The advent of scientific materialism and Darwinism involved a dethroning of emotion and its expression as a specially endowed human faculty, best evidenced by Charles Darwin’s 1871 The Expression of Emotion in Man and Animals. Shakespeare’s poetic, formal expression of the passions was seen as proof of this faculty, and nowhere better exemplified than in the tragedies and in the passionate displays of the great tragic heroes. The controversy surrounding the tragic roles of the famous Victorian actor-manager Henry Irving illustrates how the embodied, human medium of the Shakespearean stage served as valuable leverage in contemporary debates about emotion.
