YAMAHA PIONEERS SOCIAL AND MOBILE MEDIA APPLICATIONS FOR NAMM AND BEYOND

—Customer Experience Group Develops Proprietary Tools to Enhance Experience for NAMM Visitors, Dealers and Customers—

BUENA PARK, Calif.— Last year, at Winter NAMM 2010, Yamaha introduced several leading edge social and mobile media applications designed to enhance the NAMM experience for show visitors. This year, the company’s Customer Experience Group (CEG) raises the stakes with the Yamaha Hub iOS app, available in the App Store for free. The innovative app – singled out by Apple as a “New and Noteworthy” addition to the App Store at its debut – aggregates data about Yamaha products, promotions, content and events at the NAMM show in Anaheim for users of Apple products and features practical functionality that be useful and informative long after the show is over. “Mobile media devices are clearly the wave of the future,” said Jeff Hawley, Director of the Yamaha Customer Experience Group. “Yamaha is committed to leveraging a strong mobile presence not just at trade shows, but also in our customers’ purses and pockets, as these devices become more sophisticated and ubiquitous.” Based on the template provided by the Yamaha Hub, the multi-media web portal that serves as “the Hub of all things Yamaha,” the new app is segmented by instrument groups and contains all Hub content, complete with an expanded area for video details and links to more information and product pages. Select YouTube and Vimeo content is also incorporated, along with all Yamaha Twitter, Facebook and news feeds. With all content searchable by keyword, the new app also contains a QR code reader. QR codes (short for Quick Response) are square barcodes readable by smartphones and other devices that offer fast links to text or Web content. In addition, the new app supports live HubTV feeds of events and performances at the Yamaha booth in the Anaheim Marriott, Marquis Ballroom. Users of the Yamaha Hub app will be able to share content via email and social media. Yamaha events and clinics posted at EventBrite will be accessible by the app, as will a geo-driven feature that helps users find their closest Yamaha dealer. Additional enhancements will be launched in 2011, when CEG will roll out the Yamaha Hub iOS app in an Android version and, to keep up with improvements on the Web and enhance accessibility, rebuild the browser-based Hub with HTML5, allowing for universal access to Yamaha content and a more app-like experience. Yamaha will also undertake the first High Definition broadcast from the NAMM show floor, powered by the NewTek TriCaster. SMALL SIZE, BIG SOUND: THE AVANTGRAND N1

—New Hybrid Instrument is the Most Compact Piano Available That Channels the Sound and Action of a Nine-Foot Concert Grand—

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha Keyboard Division introduces the AvantGrand N1, an entry-level version of the company’s acclaimed AvantGrand hybrid piano technology, which delivers the tone and touch of a nine-foot Yamaha CFIIIS concert grand piano in a smaller, more affordable package than the two other models in the series: the N2 upright and the flagship AvantGrand N3 hybrid piano. The AvantGrand N1 offers advanced piano sound reproduction without the tuning, cost or footprint of a comparable stringed instrument. Serious players who live in small spaces or who have limited budgets need not sacrifice the feel and sound of an acoustic grand. With the introduction of the AvantGrand, Yamaha ignited a revolution in the approach to sampling – the recording and playback of the notes of the actual acoustic piano. Treating the soundboard not simply as a point source of sound but as a plane, Yamaha took samples at four positions, adding optimum center and rear locations to the traditional left and right. As a sound source, Yamaha carefully selected the best single instrument from among its CFIIIS full concert grand pianos for sampling. The end result of these efforts is that AvantGrand series instruments recreate the original sound of a superb grand piano almost to perfection. Meanwhile, the instrument’s speaker system has been designed to ensure that this sound is heard best at the playing position. A three-way system, featuring woofer, mid-range and tweeter speakers reproduce the rich, natural resonance of the soundboard accurately. What’s more, each of the low-, mid-, and high frequency bands has been given its own amplifier to prevent interference between bands. This innovative configuration allows the instrument’s outstanding sound system to reproduce the nuances of each individual note. The AvantGrand N1 also offers remarkable piano action. The nuanced touch and response of the grand piano are essential measurements of piano quality. The N1 offers the player a specially developed grand piano action that mirrors that of the grand piano, providing an impressive sensitivity for the entire range from pianissimo through to fortissimo, and the ability to translate even the swiftest trills of the pianist with transparency. “Yamaha brings its hybrid technology to an expanded market with the release of the AvantGrand N1,” said Mark Anderson, Yamaha Keyboard Division marketing director. “It features the same exquisite sampling found in the other AvantGrand models. Encased within a compact, upright piano footprint, the N1 offers grand piano action and sound, making it a viable alternative to an acoustic upright or a smaller grand piano.” Beyond the AvantGrand’s compact size, striking design, sound, touch and functionality, teachers, students, performers, hobbyists, apartment dwellers, schools and institutions with small practice rooms will appreciate the competitive price point compared to concert acoustic pianos, and the fact that the instrument requires no tuning. In addition to the remarkable grand piano sound sample, the N1 also features electronic piano and harpsichord voices. The AvantGrand N1 (MSRP: $9,999) is scheduled to ship in April 2011. BÖSENDORFER 200DE3: FIRST NON-YAMAHA PIANO TO INCLUDE GROUNDBREAKING DISKLAVIER TECHNOLOGY

—Classic Model Piano Now Offers New High-End Performance Reproduction Capabilities—

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha today introduces the Bösendorfer 200DE3, the first non- Yamaha piano to feature the company’s award-winning Disklavier performance reproducing technology, which is integrated inside the new model as part of the handcrafted manufacturing process. The Bösendorfer 200DE3 derives from the vaunted Bösendorfer 200, which has enjoyed enormous popularity with music schools and professional teachers at conservatories for over 50 years. Its compact size makes it equally at home in private spaces. The model features the famous, rich and moving Bösendorfer sound, along with superior quality workmanship and optimal use of materials to create lasting value and the best sound possible. “This is the first time that we have extended the Disklavier system to another manufacturer’s name and in this case it enhances both brands,” said Mark Anderson, Marketing Director, Yamaha Keyboard Division. “Because consumers are confident in the reliability and performance capability of the Disklavier technology and in Yamaha pianos, they will perceive an enhanced value for the Bösendorfer 200DE3, which embodies Yamaha’s commitment to upholding the Bösendorfer legacy while adding sophisticated technological enhancements that have many practical benefits,” said Anderson. By keeping Bösendorfer’s brand integrity intact and adding an advantageous performance reproduction system that only Disklavier technology can bring, Yamaha has created the perfect complement to Yamaha’s high-end Disklavier piano line. Faculty and students at top colleges and music conservatories will appreciate the expanded capabilities that this reproducing technology provides, including the ability to conduct remote lessons and master classes on pianos networked over the internet, which virtually eliminates geographical boundaries between teacher and student. A great piano like Bösendorfer is a logical place to expand Disklavier technology from its role enhancing the capacity of quality Yamaha pianos. For almost a quarter century, the award-winning Disklavier performance reproducing piano systems have combined old-world craftsmanship with a range of 21st century features. Disklavier offers a sophisticated, whisper-soft playback system that turns any room into a concert hall. YAMAHA OFFERS FIRST NORTH AMERICAN VIEWING OF BÖSENDORFER AUDI DESIGN GRAND PIANO AT WINTER NAMM 2011

—Legendary Car Maker and Celebrated Keyboard Manufacturer Join Forces To Create One-of-A-Kind Piano —

ANAHEIM, Calif.— To celebrate its centenary, German automaker Audi teamed up with renowned Austrian keyboard builder Bösendorfer to produce a uniquely beautiful grand piano. Yamaha is pleased to display the groundbreaking Bösendorfer Audi Design Grand Piano in its premium piano room at Winter NAMM 2011. “One look at the Audi-designed Bösendorfer tells you this is no ordinary grand piano,” says Mark Anderson, Director of Marketing for Yamaha’s Keyboard Division. “Like the Yamaha Modus digital piano, this remarkable instrument lies at the cusp of exceptional aesthetic design and exquisite music making.” The result of a longstanding relationship between the two companies, the Bösendorfer Audi Design Grand Piano made its world debut at Audi’s 100th anniversary celebration at the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt, in 2009. Bösendorfer dealers are invited to view this stunning instrument and consider local promotional campaigns in conjunction with their local Audi dealer. To create the remarkable design, the Audi Design Studio team in Munich set out to tackle the task of housing a concert grand piano in an Audi “outer skin,” reinterpreting Audi’s design philosophy in the form of a grand piano. Audi’s design team cooperated closely with the specialists at Bösendorfer, to create a remarkable cabinet that would not impact the piano’s sound. While the piano’s acoustics remain unaffected, the Audi Design grand piano is certainly different. Incorporating important aspects of Audi automobile design, the piano features generous surface areas, sleek lines, sharply drawn edges and logically positioned joints. One of the most striking features, the lid, extends without a break down to the base – an innovation that yields a large, one-piece surface. To reduce the sense of weight on the treble side, a slim aluminum-look leg is used. In the same spirit of purist design, the designers have concealed the hinges in the lid above the keyboard. The lid itself can be opened with an unobtrusively integrated handle. Priced at $140,000, the instrument can be ordered at audi@Bösendorfer.com. For more information, visit Yamaha at Winter NAMM 2011 at the Anaheim Marriott Marquis ballroom, write Yamaha Corporation of America, P.O. Box 6600, Buena Park, CA 90622; telephone (714) 522-9011; e-mail [email protected]; or visit www.yamaha.com/press.

GOING GREEN: THE NEW SLIM, LIGHT, COMPACT YAMAHA PIAGGERO NP SERIES ULTRAPORTABLE DIGITAL PIANOS

—High Quality Piano Voices and Basic Piano-Centric Features Enable Practicing or Performing Piano Music Anywhere—

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha today introduced the Piaggero NP Series ultraportable digital pianos at Winter NAMM 2011. Designed to appeal to piano purists seeking an extremely portable instrument, this new line offers high quality piano Voices and basic piano-centric features for practicing or performing piano anywhere. Extremely lightweight, the Piaggero NP Series “goes green” with an energy-saving Energy Conservation Optimized (ECO) power-down feature. The power-saving mode automatically engages after 30 minutes of inactivity and can be over-ridden if the user so desires. “We’ve found that there are many electronic keyboard customers who aren’t necessarily interested in an instrument that does everything,” says Dane Madsen, Yamaha Electronic Keyboard Marketing Manager. “Many players just want something that feels right and has a great piano sound. The new Piaggero NP-31 and NP-11 deliver these essentials in an ultraportable package that can go anywhere you can.” Added Madsen, “The extreme portability of the NP-11 and NP-31 make them great choices for the “on-the-go” musician. Now, the keyboard player can have a nice piano touch, tone and portability on par with an acoustic guitar.” The new Piaggero NP Series offers classic Yamaha piano tone and 76 full-sized keys in an ultra-portable package weighing in at just 12 pounds (NP-31). Operating on just 6 AA batteries, users don’t even need a power outlet to play their piano wherever their music takes them. Yamaha has added a new 61-key model (NP-11), as well as an easy-to-use panel design with dedicated Voice-select buttons. The Piaggero has a built-in metronome with adjustable tempo and time signature that will appeal to the pianist who knows that practice makes perfect. The NP-31’s Graded Soft Touch Action emulates the graded resistance of an acoustic piano without the added weight of hammers. Additionally, the NP-31 and NP-11 make for a convenient note-entry MIDI controller with ultra-natural piano voices built-in for home studio use. According to Madsen, “No other controllers in this price range feel or sound as good as the Piaggero.” In 2010, Yamaha launched the highly successful Piaggero Series of ultra-portable digital pianos, including the NP-V60 and NP-V80 models. Combining the words piano and leggero, Italian for "light," these new 76-key digital pianos emphasize portability, interactive features and superior piano Voice quality. Shipping in May 2011, the Piaggero NP-31 carries an MSRP of $399, while the Piaggero NP-11 has an MSRP of $249. IN THE BLACK: YAMAHA YDP-161B IS THE PERFECT PRACTICE AND PERFORMANCE PIANO

—Latest Arius Model Comes in Black—

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Yamaha introduces the 88-note Graded Hammer action Arius YDP- 161B Digital Piano at Winter NAMM 2011. The new model is perfect for home use as a practice and performance piano and features high-quality AWM Dynamic Sampled piano Voices. The new black walnut finish adds an attractive option to the already popular Arius line and the key action helps build proper finger technique for playing on an acoustic grand piano. “Anyone who walks into a piano store quickly realizes that the most popular color for pianos is black,” said Dane Madsen, marketing manager, Yamaha Electronic Keyboards. “Though Rosewood has become the most common color in digital pianos for decades, the Arius YDP-161B in black walnut will undoubtedly be a welcome color option for digital piano customers.” Providing true piano touch and tone, the YDP-161B is perfect for beginners and experienced pianists alike. The half-damper effect gives players expressive control over sustained sounds when pedaling for a more realistic acoustic piano experience. The two- track song recorder, which captures and reproduces any performance, is ideal as both a musical scratch pad and for using built-in recordings of standard piano repertoire during practice. Another great feature is the ability to mute either hand of the 50 preset songs, letting players practice each hand independently at their own tempo until they’re ready to put the two parts together. Dual headphone jacks allow two people to sit at the instrument and play, practice or teach in privacy without making a sound out of the speaker system. The entire instrument is covered by Yamaha’s Rock Solid Reliance warranty covering both parts and labor for three years, which is an exceptional time period for both the home electronics and musical instrument industries. The YDP 161B (MSRP: $1,899) is expected to ship in February 2011. For more information about the YDP-161B, visit Yamaha at Winter NAMM 2011 at the Marriott Hotel Marquis Ballroom; write Yamaha Corporation of America, P.O. All of the included Voice libraries, including Super Articulation 2 and Mega Voice-powered accompaniment Styles (interactive patterns that cover an immensely wide range of musical genres), deliver the sounds of top studio musicians to create a personal backing band that delivers uncanny realism. “Tyros4 does for vocal performance what previous Tyros models did for acoustic guitar realism via Mega Voices,” said Dane Madsen, Digital Piano marketing manager, Yamaha Keyboard Division. “Classical and gospel choirs are all inside the workstation just waiting for the player to tell them what to sing next. Yamaha even captured the recordings of these ensembles in their typical acoustic environments, so you get stunning reverbs and an authentic sense of spaciousness that are natural to cathedrals and churches.” Even though the underlying technology is ultra-sophisticated, the result makes the Tyros4 sound more authentic than past incarnations. The expanded Super Articulation 2 Voices bring non-keyboard instruments to life with humanistic techniques and automatically switch to various attacks (note-on), main-bodies (sustain), and note releases (decay), based on how the player hits the keys. Playing a Saxophone Voice with smooth legato technique makes the passage sound like it is being delivered all in one breath by a horn player, for example, but playing staccato notes creates a sound where the notes seem like they are blown individually. Placing notes together – or spaced far apart – automatically determines how a note might bend up or down to arrive at the next note in a passage. This work is all done seamlessly inside the instrument and comes very naturally to any keyboardist, regardless of playing ability. And with Tyros4, there’s more room than ever to explore your creative expression: the new Flash Expansion Board stores custom sample data (instrument recordings) either purchased online or sampled by the end user, which stays in the keyboard even after the power is turned off. Previously, custom samples had to be re- loaded every time players powered-up. It also includes hard-disk recording that captures anything played or sung through a new XLR balanced microphone combo-jack. MP3 audio files can be stored as part of the registration set up for instant recall and playback. This next-generation Tyros can reproduce instruments and arrangements from over 500 different styles of music from around the world with the press of a button – 50 more than Tyros 3. Studio-style DSP effects like reverb, chorus and EQ add an extra element of pro- level sound quality to the 2,153 dynamic instrument Voices, 30 organ flutes and 44 drum sets. Multi-pads allow for special phrases, and even trigger selected samples in sync with a particular style in real time. The Music Finder feature lets players dial up song title-sorted setups to get them playing quicker and easier. They can even create custom set lists that take them from one setup to the next at the touch of a button. Custom Registrations benefit players who like everything set a particular way, but One Touch Settings, another great feature that gets keyboardists up and playing faster, automatically suggest appropriate Voices for the chosen performance Style. “Tyros4 is the freshest and most content-rich Arranger Workstation on the market,” said Madsen. “Its advanced Yamaha voicing technology, including Ambient Sampling and Wave Cycling, achieves incredibly realistic sounds that are easily playable. These technologies, along with Yamaha’s proven Super Articulation 2 Voices for non- keyboard sounds, enable keyboardists to experience a new dimension of realism without having to change the way they play.” For more information on the Yamaha Tyros 4, visit Yamaha Corporation of America at Winter NAMM 2011 in the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, Marquis Ballroom; write Yamaha Corporation of America, P.O. A-SERIES: NEW, BOLD GENERATION OF YAMAHA ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC GUITARS REDEFINES TONE, FEEL AND PLAYABILITY

—A New Look, A New Feel, A New Sound for Yamaha Guitars—

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A new generation of Yamaha acoustic-electric guitars is on the way. Yamaha Guitars is proud to expand on its successful line-up of acoustic-electric guitars with the unveiling of the new A-Series handcrafted guitars. Featuring a new look, a new feel and a new sound, the A-Series launches Yamaha into a previously untapped market segment by providing a professional instrument designed to be the workhorse of any steel-string guitarist’s arsenal. Offered in a dreadnought cutaway and a concert size cutaway, the A–Series represents a departure from the look of Yamaha’s acclaimed FG Series and L Series guitars. From the new design to the touch-of- class rosette and mahogany binding, Yamaha has focused on every detail to create the feel and playability sought by today’s acoustic-electric guitar player. Featuring a slim neck profile and a rounded fretboard edge, the A-Series delivers ease and comfort. Yamaha also increased its traditional string spacing and lowered the action to accommodate today’s players. In addition, the semi-open pore finish on the necks of the A-Series maintains the wood’s feel, yet also enhances playability. Tone is always key to an acoustic electric guitar and Yamaha has overachieved with the A-Series. Dreadnought and concert shapes are offered in Mahogany back and sides and Rosewood back and sides. All models feature solid spruce tops and are outfitted with new S.R.T. (Studio Response Technology) electronics developed by Yamaha. The new S.R.T. preamp, an exclusive Yamaha technology, incorporates a piezo pickup system with a built-in microphone modeling technique specific to each guitar model. The S.R.T. system lets players choose from three different mic settings that can be blended with the piezo pickup, delivering on the often-elusive dream of providing studio- quality sound while playing live on stage. In addition, the S.R.T. system’s feedback detector cancels feedback frequencies in live situations. “We often hear stories from artists and customers that their first guitar was a Yamaha and now, with the new A-Series, their next guitar should also be a Yamaha,” said Dennis Webster, Marketing Manager, Yamaha Guitars. “The new handcrafted A- Series guitars exhibit many firsts for Yamaha acoustic-electric guitars while delivering an outstanding look, unbelievable tone, and a comfortable feel. With these incredible guitars, Yamaha will reach new players.” Armando Vega, Product Manager, Yamaha Guitars, said “this guitar is definitely designed for frequent performers who require a reliable workhorse that looks great, feels great and sounds amazing in all applications. The A-Series provides the ultimate performance-level ‘bang-for-your-buck’ guitar by offering quality build and materials, leading edge electronics and a neck profile that is a thrill to play instead of a chore.” The A-Series guitars are expected to ship in May 2011. GOOD KARMA: KARMA-LAB RELEASES SOFTWARE FOR THE XS AND XF

Cross-Platform KARMA Motif Software to Be Released at Winter NAMM 2011

BUENA PARK, Calif. Yamaha and Karma-Lab announces the development and release of KARMA Motif Software for PC and Mac. This new entry in the renowned developer’s line of software applications brings the award-winning and patented KARMA algorithmic music technology to the Yamaha Motif XS and Yamaha Motif XF platforms. “This exciting new collaboration brings the power of KARMA to a completely new user base using the great sounds and features of the Yamaha Motif series,” said KARMA developer Stephen Kay, who will demonstrate the software at NAMM. “This will add a whole new dimension to the Motif experience.” KARMA Motif debuts the new KARMA 3.0 technology with a host of new features including eight-track design (six KARMA Modules and two Keyboard Layers) per Performance, per-track Volume and Mute stored in each of the 32 Scenes and the ability to individually adjust the mix of all parts in each Scene. Users are also able to control Velocity Response Curves by individually tailoring the velocity response for the left hand keyboard, the right hand keyboard, the input to KARMA from the keyboard, and the 16 Chord Triggers (pads), without editing the Motif's programs or songs. A Fill/Stop Feature allows for the use of one or more modules as a melodic or drum fill with the ability to stop and start other modules automatically. The Advanced Stutter Feature lets users retrigger the entire groove at different rhythmic resolutions, from machine-gun stutters to slow triplet hits. It also features a real-time Master Transpose function, Chord Triggers that can activate pre-programmed chords, hits, sound effects and even the Motif's arps. And, with the new KARMA software, all of the buttons and sliders on the Motif's interface (in Remote Mode) can be used to trigger the Chord Triggers and Fills, the Stutter feature, Scene changes, Scene mixes and real-time algorithmic variations. KARMA Motif's Performances use the Motif's Song/Mixing mode, where each of the 64 songs is a complete KARMA algorithmic music groove with a left hand and right hand zone for controlling KARMA and soloing on top of it. The Motif's arps are also integrated in many performances as additional elements that can be added via the 16 Chord Triggers. While in Song Mode, players are just one step away from recording their KARMA-created musical performances into the Motif's sequencer, or the output can be routed to any DAW for external sequencing. Furthermore, a KARMA Performance can call up any Motif Voice, Performance, Song, Pattern, or Master slot when loading, so that KARMA can be used in any of the Motif's modes. “KARMA is one of the most innovative and interactive music software programs ever developed,” said Athan Billias, Director of Marketing at Yamaha’s Pro Audio & Combo division. “Combined with the incredible variety of Motif arps and unique features, like real-time Loop remix, KARMA and Motif combine to create one of the most powerful music production platforms available today.” KARMA Motif Software for PC and Mac ($199) is scheduled to be available directly from Karma-Lab in April 2011.
