At New Plymouth Girls’ High School you will find a school with 139 years of rich tradition and also a place where a 21st Century approach to learning is fostered. Our mission statement is that we exist so that each young woman has the opportunity to discover and develop the necessary knowledge, skills, values and character to enable her to fulfil her potential. We are committed to the growth and development of the whole person and view the academic, sports, arts, cultural and personal progress of students as all vitally important. We also want students to develop a future focused sustainable approach to life as they shape their vocational and career goals. The school has approximately 188 courses and over 100 co-curricular activities, meaning students are spoilt for choice. There are numerous opportunities for students to experience leadership by taking on positions, being involved in committees or just giving others a hand. Students can also work toward a wide range of badges and awards. The staff at New Plymouth Girls’ High School are highly committed and spend endless hours tutoring, coaching and training students. Hence, our results academically and in the sports, arts and cultural fields are enviable. The school values of, Whakamana-Respect, Haepapa-Responsibility and Whanaungatanga- Relationships are at the heart of how we operate. We are a restorative school with a rich ethnic mix, drawing on students from over 50 different cultural backgrounds, including international and exchange students. In Taranaki we are blessed to live in a location where we can make the most of the environment and lifestyle that Taranaki has to offer from the sea, to the mountain, parks, rivers, farms and bushland scattered throughout the province. All the waka have historical connections to Taranaki through tribal interactions and they were great ocean-going canoes that were used in the migrations that settled New Zealand. As a team, their role is to support and assist students through any personal, vocational or educational difficulties. Our prime concern is caring for the needs of individual students and supporting their learning. WAI ORA WELLNESS CENTRE Services available at the Wai Ora Wellness Centre include counselling, general health concerns, health education and promotion and referral to other services. The Guidance Counsellors, together with our Nurse, are available daily for students to make appointments or for parents to make contact with them. The Public Health Nurse and Adolescent Health Clinic are also situated within the Wai Ora Wellness Centre for students to access each week. 04 AWHINA LEARNING CENTRE The Learning Support team is based in the heart of our school at the Awhina Learning Centre. Awhina means “help and support” and this is our ultimate goal for all our students – no student should be unsupported. The Awhina Learning Centre (ALC) is in C Block which is beside the school hall and adjacent to Drama Room 1. Awhina means “help and support” and this is our goal for our students so that no student is left behind. Based at the Awhina Learning Centre is a team of support staff who work together to help students make the most of their opportunities at New Plymouth Girls’ High School. The Awhina Learning Centre offers a range of support to students, staff and parents. Students are referred to the Awhina Learning Centre by teachers, support staff or through self-referral. Contact Awhina aims to provide a safe, positive learning Ms Shirley McVicar environment where students can receive the HOD Awhina Learning Centre assistance they need through a range of different SENCO (Special Education programmes. The programmes are task based with Needs Co-ordinator) a focus on the key competencies outlined in the New Zealand curriculum and the learning of life skills.
