It was in this rural environment that Millard Sheets was raised and became sensitive to California’s agricultural lifestyle. Millard Sheets’ mother died in childbirth. His father, John Sheets, was deeply distraught and unable to raise his son on his own. Millard was sent to live with his maternal grandparents, Louis and Emma Owen, on their neighbouring horse ranch. His grandmother, at age thirty-nine, and grandfather, at age forty, were still relatively young. Additionally, with two of their four youngest daughters, ages ten and fourteen, living at home, family life appeared normal. His grandfather, whom Millard would call “father,” was an accomplished horseman and would bring horses from Illinois to race against Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin (1828-1909) at Baldwin’s “Santa Anita Stable,” later to become Santa Anita Park. Two parcels to the east contain surface parking for the building (APN 4267-007-002 and APN 4267-007- 003). An alley runs along the south property line of the parcel containing the building. Additional parking is located south of this alley on a separate parcel (APN 4267-007-030), which is zoned for residential use. The building was constructed as part of a campaign of approximately 40 branch bank/office properties implemented by H.F. Ahmanson & Co. (Ahmanson & Co.) and subsidiaries, including Home Savings & Loan Association, and built between 1954 and 1975.

    1950 Sculpture in Wood and Stone by Carroll Barnes (March 1–March 15) Carroll Barnes (American, 1906–1997) worked in various careers before turning his attention to sculpture full time at the age of thirty. His skills earned him a position as a professor of art at the University of Texas and commissions from many public and private institutions. His sculptures are created in various media, such as Lucite and steel. This exhibition of the California-based artist’s work presented thirty-seven of his sculptures. Barnes studied with Carl Milles (American, 1875–1955) at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. [File contents: exhibition flier] Color Compositions by June Wayne (March) June Wayne’s (American, 1918–2011) work received publicity in an article by Jules Langsner, who praised her for developing techniques of drawing the viewer’s eye through imagery and producing a sense of movement in her subjects. Her more recent works (as presented in the show) were drawn from the dilemmas to be found in Franz Kafka’s works. Some of the works included in this exhibition were Apocrypha, I Hate Birds, Walpurgisnacht, Winter 1940, Nine Cats, and Four Cows and Tree Oranges. Watercolors by James Couper Wright (April 3–April 15) Eighteen of James Couper Wright’s (1906–1969) watercolors were presented in this exhibition. Wright was born in Scotland, but made his home in Southern California for the previous eleven years.

    CONTEMPORARY WORKS ‘TOON UP In the 1940s and 50s, the popular culture of the United States was saturated with images of cartoons. The baby boom inspired the use of cartoons in advertising; lure in the kids, and the parents will spend more money. But whether for advertising or entertainment, cartoons were the order of the day, and the visual language through which they communicated was seen on a massive scale. Accessibility is one aspect of cartoons that makes them excellent inspirations for visual art. A vast majority of the population has seen a cartoon on television, in a movie, or as part of a comic strip or graphic novel. This widespread familiarity with the construct of cartoons allows people of all ages and sensibilities to enjoy and understand the message contained therein. The resurrected Jesus Christ is leading a proces- sion of saints, thinkers, teachers, and writers from different centuries and locations to convey the concept of the Roman Catholic Church’s historical continuity. n the words of Millard Sheets: “What they asked me to do was to suggest in a great processional the idea of a never-ending line of great scholars, thinkers, and teachers — saints that represented the best that man has recorded, and which are found represented in a library. The thought was that the various peri- ods that are suggested in the theme have unfolded in the continuous process of one generation giving to the next. I put Christ at the top with the disciples to suggest that He is the great teach- er — that is really the thematic idea.” Composed of 324 panels, the mural has 81 different stones from 16 countries in 171 finish- es, including granite, marble, and limestone. Sheets first made a painting of the design, and the Cold Spring Granite Company translated the design into a pattern of more than 6,000 separate pieces.
