Introduction: The new era of sample return missions had started since the Stardust returned samples from com- et 81P/Wild 2 in 2006 [1], followed by the Hayabusa spacecraft from the near-Earth S-type asteroid 25143 Itokawa in 2010 [2,3]. In this year, Hayabusa2 will reach its target body, the near-Earth C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu [4], and also OSIRIS-REx toward the near-Earth B-type asteroid 101955 Bennu [5]. Additionally, several other sample return missions have been planned recently, such as the Martian Moons eXplorer (MMX) for the Phobos and/or Deimos [6], the CAESAR for 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko [7], and the HELACLES for the the Moon [8]. -
United States Air Force Dr. Will Roper
UNITED STATES AIR FORCE DR. WILL ROPER Dr. Will Roper is the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics. As the Air Force’s Service Acquisition Executive, Dr. Roper is responsible for and oversees Air Force research, development and acquisition activities totaling an annual budget in excess of $60 billion for more than 550 acquisition programs. In this position, Dr. Roper serves as the principal adviser to the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force for research and development, test, production and modernization efforts within the Air Force. Prior to his current position, Dr. Roper was the founding Director of the Pentagon’s Strategic Capabilities Office. Established in 2012, the SCO imagines new—often unexpected and game-changing—uses of existing government and commercial systems: extending their shelf-life and restoring surprise to the military’s playbook. Since 2012, SCO has grown from an annual budget of $50 million to the current $1.5 billion request in the President’s 2018 budget with projects spanning new concepts such as hypervelocity artillery, multi-purpose missiles, autonomous fast-boats, smartphone-navigating weapons, big-data-enabled sensing, 3D-printed systems, standoff arsenal planes, fighter avatars and fighter-dispersed swarming micro-drones which formed the world’s then-largest swarm of 103 systems. During his tenure as SCO Director, Dr. Roper served on the Department’s 2018 National Defense Strategy Steering Group, Cloud Executive Steering Group and Defense Modernization Team. Previously, Dr. Roper served as the Acting Chief Architect at the Missile Defense Agency where he developed 11 new systems, including the current European Defense architecture, advanced drones, and classified programs. -

The Magellan Spacecraft at Venus by Andrew Fraknoi, Astronomical Society of the Pacific "Having finally penetrated below the clouds of Venus, we find its surface to be naked [not hidden], revealing the history of hundreds of millions of years of geological activity. Venus is a geologist's dream planet.'' —Astronomer David Morrison This fall, the brightest star-like object you can see in the eastern skies before dawn isn't a star at all — it's Venus, the second closest planet to the Sun. Because Venus is so similar in diameter and mass to our world, and also has a gaseous atmosphere, it has been called the Earth's "sister planet''. Many years ago, scientists expected its surface, which is perpetually hidden beneath a thick cloud layer, to look like Earth's as well. Earlier this century, some people even imagined that Venus was a hot, humid, swampy world populated by prehistoric creatures! But we now know Venus is very, very different. New radar images of Venus, just returned from NASA's Magellan spacecraft orbiting the planet, have provided astronomers the clearest view ever of its surface, revealing unique geological features, meteor impact craters, and evidence of volcanic eruptions different from any others found in the solar system. This issue of The Universe in the Classroom is devoted to what Magellan is teaching us today about our nearest neighbor, Venus. Where is Venus, and what is it like? CAESAR will acquire a sample from the nucleus of comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, returning it safely to Earth. Comets are made up of materials from ancient stars, interstellar clouds, and the birth of our solar system. Acquisition & Logistics Excellence Save the Date for the 2017 DoD Product Support Manager Workshop Bill Kobren Defense Acquisition University Director, Logistics & Sustainment Center Dec. 12, 2016 Product support managers, life cycle logisticians, defense industry counterparts, program managers, and other interested members of the defense acquisition workforce once again have the opportunity to attend the annual DoD Product Support Manager (PSM) Workshop. Since 2011, the Department of Defense has hosted four Product Support Manager (PSM) Workshops. The 2017 Workshop is slated for June 6–8, 2017, in the Jacob E. Smart Conference Center at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland. The Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Logistics & Materiel Readiness) has blocked 75 rooms at the on-site lodging facility for out-of-town attendees. The facility is within walking distance of the conference center. The focus of this upcoming DoD PSM Workshop is to provide an opportunity to develop the workforce’s sustain- ment planning competency, share proven practices, and strengthen collaboration between industry and gov- ernment leaders—as well as to learn, to grow professionally, and to facilitate dialog with colleagues.
