We’d like to think that in a highly partisan modern world, we actually live up to the credo: “We New York@Night Report, You Decide”. No segment of jazz or improvised music or avant garde or 4 whatever you call it is overlooked, since only as a full quilt can we keep out the cold of commercialism. Interview: Cooper-Moore Sometimes it is more difficult, especially during the bleak winter months, to 6 by Kurt Gottschalk put together a good mixture of feature subjects but we quickly forget about that when June rolls around. It’s an embarrassment of riches, really, this first month of Artist Feature: Orrin Evans summer. This month we have the Vision Fest; a mini-iteration of the Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT); the On The Cover: Dee Dee Bridgewater inaugural Blue Note Jazz Festival taking place at the titular club as well as other 9 by Marcia Hillman city venues; the always-overwhelming Undead Jazz Festival, this year expanded to four days, two boroughs and ten venues and the 4th annual Red Hook Jazz Encore: Lest We Forget: Festival in sight of the Statue of Liberty. -

Simultaneous with the exhibition opening, an extraordinary book of poems, essays and music inspired by and specially commissioned for the series, RICHTER 858, will be released internationally. One of the rare groups of Richter abstractions to remain fully intact, Abstract Pictures (858) consists of eight intensely colored and formally complex paintings, which were among the first works completed by the artist in the summer of 1999, after recovering from a serious illness. Compelled by these works—and with the artist’s blessing— writer, editor and record producer David Breskin created RICHTER 858 as both investigation and celebration of this suite of pictures in particular, and Richter abstraction in general. As Music Editor for the Voice, he had come up with the Consumer Guide format back in 1969. His original format was twenty records, each accorded a single-paragraph review ending with a letter grade. His domain was rock and roll, but his taste and interests ranged widely, so his CGs regularly featured country, blues, folk, reggae, jazz, and later world (especially African), hip-hop, and electronica. Aside from two years off working for Newsday (when his Consumer Guide was published monthly in Creem), the Voice published his columns more-or-less monthly up to 2006, when new owners purged most of the Senior Editors. A STUDY OF BILL FRISELL THROUGH PAUL MOTIAN’S ON BROADWAY RECORDINGS BY TRAVIS LEWIS DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Music with a concentration in Jazz Performance in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2016 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Lawrence Gray, Chair Professor Charles McNeill Assistant Professor Joel Spencer Associate Professor Reynold Tharp Abstract This study examines Bill Frisell’s work through an analysis of his improvised solos on Paul Motian’s albums On Broadway Volumes 1, 2, 3, Bill Evans, and Monk in Motian while simultaneously examining Frisell’s guitar technique and his musical influences. The analysis of his solos on Motian’s album draw from a selection of twenty transcriptions with a focus on five elements: 1) Controlled Dissonance, 2) Syncopation, 3) Melody, Sequencing and Cells, 4) Note Bends, and 5) Dyads of Sixths and Thirds.
