The Egyptian Predynastic and State Formation

This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract When the archaeology of Predynastic Egypt was last appraised in this journal, Savage (2001a, p. 101) expressed optimism that ‘‘a consensus appears to be developing that stresses the gradual development of complex society in Egypt.’’ The picture today is less clear, with new data and alternative theoretical frameworks challenging received wisdom over the pace, direction, and nature of complex social change. Rather than an inexorable march to the beat of the neo-evolutionary drum, primary state formation in Egypt can be seen as a more syncopated phenomenon, characterized by periods of political experimentation and shifting social boundaries. Notably, field projects in Sudan and the Egyptian Delta together with new dating techniques have set older narratives of development into broader frames of refer- ence. In contrast to syntheses that have sought to measure abstract thresholds of complexity, this review of the period between c. 4500 BC and c. 3000 BC tran- scends analytical categories by adopting a practice-based examination of multiple dimensions of social inequality and by considering how the early state may have become a lived reality in Egypt around the end of the fourth millennium BC. Classical and Hellenistic glass workshops from Rhodes Pavlos Triantafyllidis* Among the various crafts of Rhodes, glass making1 undoubtedly occupied an important position during the Classical and Hellenistic periods in the thriving commer- cial and economic activity of the island2. The arguments for a flourishing glassworking production on the island of Rhodes are mainly based on the typological and chrono- logical study of many finds, and on workshop evidence which came to light during the fifty-four years of rescue excavations of the 22nd Ephorate of Prehistorical and Classical Antiquities, mainly at the edge of the plain, in the Pano;ı “Akran (Diodoros 20.83.1-4), the town of Rhodes, as well as in the excavations of the then Italian Archaeological Service3 in Ialysos and Camiros. 1. The end of the sixth century and the fifth century BC The local glass production of Rhodes seems to have begun in the last quarter of the 6th century BC with the manufacture of opaque core-formed vessels (fig. 1), but also of opaque rod-formed head-shaped and figurine-pen- dants (fig. 2) and of multi-coloured beads of similar manufacture to the core-formed vessels found mainly in Fig. 1 — Core-formed amphoriskoi. Harvey Gil Stein March 2004 James 1 Introduction Despite over a century of research since Jacques de Morgan and W. M. F. Petrie made the first discovery and identification of prehistoric artifacts in Egypt, the prehistoric or Predynastic period, especially in the final 2000 or so years leading up to the historic period,1 is not clearly understood. One of the major questions still facing Egyptologists is the question of the origins of pharaonic civilization. Specifically, was pharaonic civilization the product of a gradual evolution of a single cultural antecedent in the Nile valley, the product of a combination of a number of different cultural antecedents in the Nile valley, the product of an entirely new culture whose origins are outside the Nile valley, or a combination of all of the above? Answering this question requires a clearer understanding of prehistoric cultures both in the Nile valley proper and in the surrounding deserts and south into the modern Sudan, especially in terms of chronology and geography. In an attempt to clarify one of these cultural relationships, this paper will focus on the Badarian and Amratian cultural units. The Badarian is traditionally described as a Neolithic farming culture dating to between 5000/4000 and 3900 BC focused in a 35 km strip of around 40 settlement areas in Middle Egypt along the Nile, despite finds of Badarian-like materials outside this presumed homeland at Hierakonpolis, Armant, and Wadi Hammamat.2 The Amratian is described as a Predynastic farming culture with a widespread presence in Upper Egypt spanning Matmar in the north to Wadi Kubbaniya in the south, dating to between 3900 and 3650 BC. -

Megalithism in Ceresio Valley (N.-W. Lombardy, Italy) Alfredo Pirondini*, Gian Paolo Bocca, Filippo Pirondini* and Cecilia Pirondini* Summary The Authors describe the megalithic findings and petroglyphs, their orientation with the possible correlations that may indicate an archaeologic and archaeoastronomic attendance pre-and/or protohistoric of described places. Following an analysis of possible future research. Introduction The described findings are located in Porto Ceresio (Varese District, North-Western Lombardy, Italy), belonging to the current "Regio Insubrica" (a Cross-Border Community: Euroregion established in 1995), on the border with Canton Ticino (TI), belonging to the Swiss Confederation (CH), on the South-Western slopes of Monte San Giorgio (i.e. Mount St. George), UNESCO World Heritage. The resort is located on Southern coast of Lugano Lake (or Ceresio), a pre-Alpine lake formed between 18,000 and 15,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The name “Ceresio” has unclear origins. Some derives from the Latin “cerasus” (i.e. Cherry), but from deeper linguistic analysis, lemmas “keres”, “krres”, “kar”, “ker”, the roots *krs and, above all, *kr are related to the concepts of altitude and elevation. Hence the Celtic - Insubric “kar”, meaning: rock, prominence, horn. By further linguistic analysis (4), "Ceresio" is not a toponym, but a hydronym, derived from the root *shr, related to "current" (s) of "water" (hr). Since prehistory, Porto Ceresio was a harbour for lake trades between Po Valley, North and Central Europe. The flat area, currently occupied by relatively recent buildings, was, until the Late Middle Ages, a swamp known as "Palude Ceresia". -
