The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences. -

Abstract Knowledge of evolutionary relationships or phylogeny allows for effective predictions about the unstudied characteristics of species. These include the presence and biological activity of an organism’s venoms. To date, most venom bioprospecting has focused on snakes, resulting in six stroke and cancer treatment drugs that are nearing U.S. Food and Drug Administration review. Fishes, however, with thousands of venoms, represent an untapped resource of natural products. The first step in- volved in the efficient bioprospecting of these compounds is a phylogeny of venomous fishes. Here, we show the results of such an analysis and provide the first explicit suborder-level phylogeny for spiny-rayed fishes. The results, based on ;1.1 million aligned base pairs, suggest that, in contrast to previous estimates of 200 venomous fishes, .1,200 fishes in 12 clades should be presumed venomous. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this second paper dedicated to report on deep-sea fishes from Brazilian waters, mainly from Bahia, the presence of one family and three species of Aulopoidei is reported for the first time from Brazilian waters: the aulopid Aulopus filamentosus (royal flagfin), the synodontids Saurida normani and Synodus poeyi (shortjaw lizardfish and offshore lizardfish, respectively). The presence of Synodus saurus and Saurida suspicio in Brazilian waters is discussed, and a key to the Western Atlantic Aulopoidei is provided. Key words: Lizardfishes, flagfin, Aulopus, Saurida, Synodus, Aulopidae, Synodontidae, deep-sea fishes Introduction According to Davis (2010), the world-wide marine and usually deep-sea, benthic or pelagic Aulopiformes order, contains 16 families, split in 3 suborders of extant taxa: Alepisauroidei (Alepisauridae, Bathysauridae, Bathysauroididae, Bathysauropsidae, Chlorophthalmidae, Evermannellidae, Giganturidae, Ipnopidae, Notosudidae, Paralepididae, Scopelarchidae and Sudidae), Paraulopoidei (Paraulopidae), and Aulopoidei (Aulopidae, Pseudotrichonotidae, and Synodontidae). -

The Philippines and Guam were previously regarded as the northernmost records of the species. In addition, 15 specimens of S. fow- leri from the Timor, Coral, and Tasman Seas are also reported, these being the first records from Australian waters. Introduction The smallest Indo-Pacific scorpionfish, Sebastapistes fowleri, was originally de- scribed as Scorpaena fowleri by Pietschmann (1934) on the basis of three specimens from the Hawaiian Islands. Since its subsequent redescription by Pietschmann (1938), who changed the generic allocation to Scorpaenodes Bleeker, 1857, the species was not regarded as a valid species until Randall (1973) listed it (as a mem- ber of Scorpaenopsis Heckel, 1840) from Tahiti. -

We created a database of diet studies from the northern Gulf of Mexico that included six diet metrics: frequency of occurrence, wet weight, dry weight, number, volume, index of relative importance, and index of caloric importance. We then used this information to construct a set of traditional networks (all prey and predators were from a single taxonomic level and trophic connections were parameterized with a single diet metric). We also constructed a “robust” network where all taxa were identified to the lowest taxonomic level and trophic connections were parameterized using a resampling approach that included all available information.
