  • Castello Di Cabbiavoli the Puccioni Family Is Pleased to Welcome You in Cabbiavoli and Wish You a Pleasant Stay! Please Treat Our Home As Your Home
Castello di Cabbiavoli The Puccioni family is pleased to Welcome you in Cabbiavoli and wish you a pleasant stay! Please treat our Home as your Home Article published by the Magazine Italy - June 2005 ‘Cabbiavoli Castle - a Tuscan paradise’ by Adam Butler Situated prominently on a Tuscan hilltop amidst the rolling, vine and olive tree strewn hills around the town of Castelfiorentino lies the astonishingly beautiful Cabbiavoli Castle. This typically grand, Florentine-style residential complex comprises of a main building with a Baroque-façade where the living quarters are located, flanked by a tall medieval brick tower on one side and a little chapel dating to the 13th century on the other. Originally built in 1210 by a certain Count Alberti di Certaldo who was chief of the ruling Longobard family that dominated the nearby Elsa valley, the castle of Cabbiavoli was originally a fortified “borgo” of the Alberti family and in fact it still retained its farm and granary until the renovations in the late 1940s. The only parts remaining of the original fortified castle and the adjacent buildings are the surrounding defensive walls and the tower. This brick tower still stands proudly today (albeit slightly leaning) and, flanked by a huge ancient pine tree, offers dramatic views of the undulating, fertile countryside below, as far as the towered town of San Gimignano which is just visible on the horizon to the south. The Alberti family owned and lived in the castle until the 17th century, after which it fell into the hands of the patrician Brandini family. In 1900 Alice Brandini married Cesare Puccioni, son of a local entrepreneur Luigi who by 1888 had founded a chemicals factory just north of the town of Castelfiorentino.

BIBLIOTHECA Prologue Describing a plant might seem banal if it was not for the fact that the plant being described is on the verge of extinction and practically unknown. Aglione di Valdichiana is, on the one hand, a basic garden vegetable. But it is also much more than that. It is a pearl that has been hidden away for years (and which we have now rediscovered) that relays the character of the terroir and the sweet breath of Venus. It’s the beginning of a new project! An incipit! Hidden in its vertical shape is a sign that indicates a path that speaks of distant origins, powerful symbols, and ancient civilizations. We shall leave to others the work of looking for and discovering the cultural references that confirm intuitions or creative fantasies. We have a different task: beginning. – We need to begin producing aglione according to fair agricultural trade regulations that respect the earth and its fruits; – We need to begin a path of communication that, before even cultivating the earth, helps us cultivate ourselves; – We need to begin welcoming growers who believe in a sustainable project that is re- spectful of the fundamental rules of healthy living, people who are not subordinate to or trapped by commercial interests or ideologies that have nothing to do with the healthy passion for farming; – We need to look beyond, not simply at the result of our planted fields but at a new use of the product, we need to collaborate with producers of specialty foods, without jealousy or provincial narrow-mindedness.

  • Val D'orcia 1
VAL D’ORCIA Sweet round-shaped hills, changing colour according to the season, low valleys along the Orcia river, parish churches and restored farms here and there, often hiding in a forest of cypresses. Such are the characteristics making the charm of Val d’Orcia incomparable, an extraordinary synthesis between nature, art and deeply rooted traditions. This beautiful area of Tuscany is under the authority of the Val d’Orcia Park, instituted to maintain and develop the heritage of a region to promote its typical produce. The fertile countryside of Val d’Orcia, cultivated with respect and wisdom, produces excellent wines, olive oil and high quality cereals. The landscape is deeply marked by man’s intervention aiming to enrich the natural beauty with sobre religious and civilian works of art. It is difficult to explain with words the serene charm emanating from the lands of Val d’Orcia in the spring, when the hills turn green, in the summer when the yellow colour of sunflowers and wheat fields dominates the area, in the beautiful fragrance of a variety of plants. In the south of Bagno Vignoni, olive groves, vineyards and cultivated fields are replaced by a Mediterranean bushland while in the Mount Amiata area opens out a thick forest of chestnut and beech groves. Mother Nature, especially generous with the Val d’Orcia’s people, did not forget to create thermal springs for rest and care. The Via Francigena goes through Val d'Orcia near the small village of Bagno Vignoni, visited by famous people and pilgrims. Already inhabited in the Etruscan period, the Val d’Orcia keeps architectural vestiges from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
