Annotated comments for selected taxa provide taxonomic, floristic, and ecological information, particularly for taxa not recognized in recent treatments of the Missouri flora. Synonymy crosswalks are provided for three references commonly used in Missouri. A discussion of the concept and application of Floristic Quality Assessment is presented. To accurately reflect ecological and taxonomic relationships, new combinations are validated for two distinct taxa, Dichanthelium ashei and D. werneri , and problems in application of infraspecific taxon names within Quercus shumardii are clarified. 4 Oklahoma Native Plant Record Volume 9, December 2009 VASCULAR PLANTS OF SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA FROM THE SANS BOIS TO THE KIAMICHI MOUNTAINS Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 1969 Francis Hobart Means, Jr. Midwest City, Oklahoma Current Email Address: [email protected] The author grew up in the prairie region of Kay County where he learned to appreciate proper management of the soil and the native grass flora. After graduation from college, he moved to Eastern Oklahoma State College where he took a position as Instructor in Botany and Agronomy. In the course of conducting botany field trips and working with local residents on their plant problems, the author became increasingly interested in the flora of that area and of the State of Oklahoma. This led to an extensive study of the northern portion of the Oauchita Highlands with collections currently numbering approximately 4,200. The specimens have been processed according to standard herbarium procedures. The first set has been placed in the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University with the second set going to Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton. Editor’s note: The original species list included habitat characteristics and collection notes. A plant is considered exotic, (alien, foreign, non- indigenous, non-native), when it has been introduced by humans to a location outside its native or natural range. Most invasive, exotic plants have escaped cultivation or have spread from its origin and have become a problem or a potential problem in natural biological communities. For example, black locust, a tree that is native to the southern Appalachian region and portions of Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, was planted throughout the U.S. for living fences, erosion control, and other uses for many years. Black locust is considered exotic outside its natural native range because it got to these places Kudzu is an invasive exotic plant that has spread by human introduction rather than by natural from Japan and China to become a large problem in dispersion. It has become invasive, displacing native much of the US. Local, state, and the federal species and adversely impacting ecosystems and governments spend millions of dollars per year to several endangered native bird species that depend on control the spread of kudzu. Even yearly control other plants for food, as well as several endangered may not be enough to successfully remove kudzu. Seeds can remain dormant in the plant species. -

I spent several weeks roaming the wilds of Michigan and SOUGHT FOR 2006 Minnesota (work projects). Experienced some great plants and natural communities but it’s KENTUCKY always great to come back to Kentucky. WILDFLOWER OF THE Our native plant certification program at Northern Kentucky University is still going great. This YEAR semester, John Thieret is teaching a course on grasses and the students are apparently loving it. For those of you that do not know John, he is one Past recipients: of the country’s leading botanists. All enjoyed the presentation by Tom Barnes. The Fall colors have given way to 2006 choices: winter buds and piles of leaves. Earlier this fall, Smooth Aster (Symphyotrichum laeve) Lela and I traveled through Asheville NC on our Aromatic Aster (Symphyotrichum oblongifolium) way to Columbia SC and enjoyed a nice slash of Foxglove Beardstongue (Penstemon digitalis) Fall color along the way. -

The modern flora includes 741 native and non-native taxa. The fossil record includes more than 219 species documented by specimens recovered from packrat ( Neotoma spp.) middens spanning the last 43,000+ years. An additional checklist is provided for the approximately 135 taxa restricted to higher-elevation mountains in Organ Pipe Cactus NM. This article is the second contribution for our flora of southwestern Arizona.
