The only known list of ants of Oklahoma is one prepared by Mo Ro Smith (1935)0 Early in 1954 a survey of the state of Oklahoma was made to determine the species present and their distributiono The results of this survey, which blanketed the entire State, are given in this paper. The author wishes to express his appreciation to Dro Do E. Howell, chairman of the writer's thesis committee, for his valuable assistance and careful guidance in the preparation of this papero Also, much guidance on preparation of this manuscrip_t was received from Drs. Life-History Constraints in Inaccurate Batesian Myrmecomorphic Spiders (Araneae: Corinnidae, Gnaphosidae)

Accurate Batesian mimicry is known to impose constraints on some traits of the mimic, such as foraging or reproductive behaviour. It is not known whether life-history traits of inaccurate Batesian mimics are constrained as well. We studied selected life- history traits of three spider species, Liophrurillus flavitarsis, Phrurolithus festivus (both Corinnidae), and Micaria sociabilis (Gna- phosidae), that are inaccurate mimics of ants. Namely, we were interested in how myrmecomorphy (ant-like resemblance) constrains their circadian activity, trophic niche and reproductive behaviour. The spiders were found to have diurnal activity like their models, whereas their close relatives have nocturnal activity. The three mimics do not catch ants, nor do they use food resources of ants, but catch various tiny invertebrates that occur in the vicinity of their models. Their trophic niche seems to be constrained by occurrence among ants. Absence of courtship and long lasting copulation, in a position that does not provide protective resemblance, do not seem to be constrained by mimicry in the three species. Comparative analysis of fecundity in mimetic and non-mimetic spiders showed that clutch size is also not constrained. Unlike in accurate mimics, life-history traits of inaccurate myrmecomorphs appear not to be constrained. -

STEINER, Birgit C. SCHLICK-STEINER, Giselher GRABENWEGER & Heinz WIESBAUER Abstract Crabro varus PANZER, 1799 has been originally described from Austria. After the type material has been destroyed, species identity was controversal. Most recently (BITSCH & LECLERCQ 1993, LECLERCQ 1993), the taxon has been interpreted as a species of the ant hunters, genus Tracheliodes, based on a single female collected in Corse, France. New records of Tracheliodes varus from Lower Austria confirm this interpretation; in order to stabilize the species identity, we designated a neotype from the type area, Austria. Tracheliodes varus is most similar to T. curvitarsus (HERRICH-SCHAEFFER, 1841). We present diagnoses and illustrations, describe the variation of colour patterns and give new information on the discrimination of the females of these two sibling species. New records from Austria are reported for Tracheliodes curvitarsus after more than 100 years, and for T. varus after more than 200 years. Trache- liodes curvitarsus is recorded for the first time from Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, T. varus for the first time from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Bulgaria. In Laxenburg, Lower Austria, females of T. curvitarsus and T. varus have been found syntopic, both of them hunting workers of the dolichoderine ant Liometopum microcephalum (PANZER, 1798). Based on film sequences, we present first observations on the hunting behaviour of T. varus. A total of 111 valid names of outdoor species are listed based on data from museum and private collections. Over the past decade several faunistic and taxonomic changes concerning the Czech ant fauna have occurred. The species Formica clara Forel, 1886, Lasius carniolicus Mayr, 1861, Temnothorax jailensis (Arnol’di, 1977) and Tetramorium hungaricum Röszler, 1935 were recorded on the Czech territory for the first time. Further, the presence of Camponotus atricolor (Nylander, 1849) and Lasius myops Forel, 1894, formerly regarded as uncertain, was confirmed. Moreover, the status of Tetramorium staerckei Kratochvíl, 1944 was reviewed as a species. Besides outdoor species, a list of five indoor (introduced) species is given. Male of the European Form, L. Microcephalum, Was Described More
59.57,96 L (7) Article XX.-THE NORTH AMERICAN ANTS OF THE GENUS LIOMETOPUM. BY WILLIAM MORTON WHEELER. The soft, velvety ants of the remarkable Dolichoderine genus Liometopum Mayr appear to be confined to the south temperate por- tions of the northern hemisphere. So far as known, Europe, Asia, and North America each has a characteristic species. The large male of the European form, L. microcephalum, was described more than a century ago by Panzer 1 although the corresponding worker form was not discovered till more than fifty years later by Mayr.2 This author was also the first to publish a brief description of the worker of our American species, L. apiculatum, from specimens collected in Mexico by Professor Bilimek.3 In I894 Emery4 described some Californian specimens as a new variety (occidentale) of the European microcephalum, but, as I shall endeavor to show, this form had best be regarded as a variety of apiculatum. More recently Forel has described a third species from Assam as L. lindgreeni.5 In addition to these three living species four fossil forms have been recorded from the Tertiary of Europe and North America: L. an- tiquum Mayr, imhoffi Heer, and L. schmidti Heer from Radoboj,6 and L. pingue Scudder from White River, Utah, and Green River, Wy- oming.7 These species, however, were all described from imper- fectly preserved male and female specimens more or less dubiously referable to the genus Liometopum. During my myrmecological excursions into the southwestern States and Territories I have freqftently met with our American Liometopum and have been able to learn something of its habits. -
