PREFACE After having written a two-volume work of more than a thousand pages in 1924* the author has had to labor under great difficulty, as the reader can readily understand, in order to cover practically the same ground within the limits of the present Series. On almost every page one is faced by the problem of where to eliminate, what to abridge, and to what should be given additional space. In a rapidly growing science values are con- stantly changing and new points of view arising. The task would have been serious enough had there been no new discoveries during the years since 1924. These have been so many and of such outstanding importance that an entire volume could be devoted to them alone. They have to do with various phases not only of man's physical but also of his cultural evolution. In some of these the author has had a humble part, both directly and indirectly, thanks to his position as Director of the American School of Prehistoric Research. It would be ungrateful of him, therefore, not to acknowledge in this place his debt to all those on this side of the Atlantic who have helped the School financially, and to his colleagues on the other side, who have given him and his students assistance in various ways, especially in opening gates of opportunity leading to fresh fields of prehistoric endeavor. There may still be sun stuff at its center. It began to wear a solid crust some 1500 million years ago.* This time can be apportioned into eras as follows Archeozoic 500 million years Proterozoic 500 Paleozoic 330 Mesozoic 110 Cenozoic 60 The Archeozoic era has been called the age of larval life, and the Proterozoic era the age of primitive marine inverte- brate life. Marine invertebrates were the highest type of fauna throughout the early Paleozoic era. With the middle of the Paleozoic era there appeared the first forests and the first verte- brates represented by fishes; before its close, the rise of am- phibians occurred. But the true era of amphibians came in the upper Paleozoic time which was also the age of spore-bearing plants. Gymnosperms (plants whose seeds are uncovered) appeared here and persisted throughout the early Mesozoic. Before the close of the Mesozoic era angiosperms (plants whose seeds are enclosed in a seed vessel) appeared and have con- tinued to flourish until the present. The Mesoz^'? era is pre- eminently an age of reptiles. During this era the curtain both rose and fell on dinosaurs, pterodactyls, and toothed birds; before its close there appeared true birds and small archaic mammals. Steponaitis, PhD –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Silvia Tomášková, PhD ABSTRACT From early archaeological excavation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to modern conceptions of Paleolithic stone tool evolution, radiometric dating techniques and studies of paleoenvironment have revolutionized the study of relationships and divisions between these different lithic industries. In addition, there has been a shift from the formal to the functional approach when categorizing lithic industries through time. This project aims to examine how lithic industries in France changed through the Paleolithic and early Neolithic using a curated sample from Dr. James B. Bullitt’s contribution to the North Carolina Archaeological Collection. Early and contemporary archaeological literature about early stone tools are compared and connected to broad theoretical shifts in the field since the 1800s. A PRELIMINARY SURVEY OF PRE-HISTORIC PHALANGEAL FIGURINES Duncan Caldwell Abstract. Pre-Historic phalanges with anthropic holes through one side of their shafts have usually been interpreted as whistles. But identical bones are used by several peoples as human effigies — most commonly of women and babies. Distal limb bones with incised or sculpted heads, eyes, arms and vulvas prove that such bones were also interpreted anthropomorphic- ally by Eurasian cultures in the past. The use of phalangeal figurines from central Siberia to Greenland also suggests that the practice spread around the Arctic from ancient sources. Ethnographic examples illustrate a few roles women have played in the region’s cold weather economies and how female effigies reflect such roles, but are not offered as strict analogies with Palaeolithic counterparts. Instead a case is made from new internal readings of sev- eral pre-Historic objects incorporating feminine imagery — including the ‘woman between reindeer hooves’ from Laugerie-Basse and an engraving from Étiolles — that some ancient feminine images reflect a vision of women in keeping with the division of labour in northern hunter-gatherer subsistence models. Economic necessities may partly explain how pregnancy and compact feminine effigies have been viewed ideologically in cold Eurasian areas for mil- lennia. Finally, the possible existence of perforated phalanges from the Middle Palaeolithic and even earlier is noted and a protocol of tests is suggested for determining whether their holes are anthropic or natural.

McIntosh ‘73, Class of 1954 Professor of Anthropology and Curator- in-Charge of Anthropology at the Peabody Museum, is an archaeologist who has dedicated his career to studying the Ancient World. He earned his Ph.D. at Cambridge University in 1979. Before returning to Yale in 2006, he taught at Rice University for more than twenty-five years. He boasts over 40 years of fieldwork in French-speaking Africa. For five summers, he has taught at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, where he remains on the faculty as Honorary Professor. He is spearheading a project in the Limpopo River corridor, drafting a human response to environmental change. Professor McIntosh is also currently working on a manuscript about the origins of Africa’s first empires. Sisk Interdepartmental Doctoral Program in Anthropological Sciences Stony Brook University [email protected] ABSTRACT The use of Gigapan imagery in an archaeological context allows for quick, very high resolution recording of excavation surfaces, artifacts and surrounding areas. At the Paleolithic site of Abri Castanet (France), we have, since 2008, used a Gigapan imager mounted horizontally to record lateral variation across our active excavation surface. Using GIS software and topographic data from our onsite Total Station, we can then minimize distortion, plot the image relative to artifact and feature locations and display all of these data in three-dimensions. This gives us a unique way to record and analyze patterns of variation across a constrained archaeological horizon.
