Steponaitis, PhD –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Silvia Tomášková, PhD ABSTRACT From early archaeological excavation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to modern conceptions of Paleolithic stone tool evolution, radiometric dating techniques and studies of paleoenvironment have revolutionized the study of relationships and divisions between these different lithic industries. In addition, there has been a shift from the formal to the functional approach when categorizing lithic industries through time. This project aims to examine how lithic industries in France changed through the Paleolithic and early Neolithic using a curated sample from Dr. James B. Bullitt’s contribution to the North Carolina Archaeological Collection. Early and contemporary archaeological literature about early stone tools are compared and connected to broad theoretical shifts in the field since the 1800s. Because many artifacts in the Collection are used as teaching aids, it is hoped that this project provides insight into the value of the Collection to the study of about Paleolithic hominid evolution. i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would first like to thank my advisor and thesis committee chair Dr. Davis: without his diligent guidance and investment of time, this project truly would not have been possible. Long blade from Grand Pressigny ...............................................................................43 iv 1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Understanding hominid evolution through the Paleolithic era has been one of the highest priorities in archaeology since the discipline’s early conception (van Andel et al. 2003; Bennett 1943; Binford 1985; Breuil 1913). Some of the most rapid and significant changes in the history of human evolution occurred during the Paleolithic, and thus understanding these changes in a spatial, temporal, and behavioral context is of paramount importance to the discipline (Bordes 1961a: 803). Within the past three decades, modern archaeology has revolutionized the study of Paleolithic hominid evolution by drawing upon techniques from the fields of paleoclimatology and isotope geochemistry to reevaluate the spatiotemporal placement of archaeological sites and understand them in the broader context of their paleoenvironment (van Andel et al. 2003: 31-33). In doing so, we now know much more about the lives of our ancestors, their culture, subsistence strategies, and interbreeding between hominid species. One of the central themes of this project is to examine how the study of Paleolithic archaeology in France has changed from archaeological excavations in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to modern conceptions of stone tool evolution. Artifacts from 10 French sites, 511 in total, were chosen for study from the James B. Bullitt Collection, part of the UNC Research Laboratories of Archaeology’s (RLA) North Carolina Archaeological Collection. In order to make connections with broader theoretical shifts within the field of archaeology, early and modern archaeological literature on stone tool evolution at these sites was compared with the artifacts present in the Bullitt Collection. The focus is on the inferential potential of stone tools with regard to human behavior. Early human ancestors first realized the utility of sharp stone edges for butchery and other practices. Arguably, without the advent of stone tools human evolution would have taken a different path. Stone tools allowed early hominins efficient access to meat resources and provided as avenue for cognitive development and three-dimensional problem solving. This course will provide a three-fold approach to lithic analysis: 1) study of archaeological sites and behavioral change through time relative to lithic technological changes, 2) insight into the art of laboratory lithic analysis and methods employed to attain concrete, quantitative behavioral conclusions, and 3) extensive training in stone tool replication. Such training will provide students with both an appreciation for the skills of our ancestors and with personal skills that will allow for further research into replication and human behavior.

Elle vient compléter le petit corpus de figurations humaines de ce site, par ailleurs riche en œuvres d’art. Le corps est représenté en vue frontale et se résume à un tronc et à un pelvis, avec indication des racines crurales et du triangle pubo-génital. Dans sa morphologie, il n’est pas sans rappeler la figure gravée de Lespugue et la figure en ronde bosse de Laugerie-Basse et il illustre la tendance au schématisme de ces figures féminines mobilières magdaléniennes. Discovered by D. Peyrony during his excavations between 1910 and 1913, it had been described in the monography of E. Capitan and D. Peyrony (1928) as a blade dagger (fig. 1). Without prejudice to the use of this object, it provides an unambiguous but schematic representation of a woman (fig. 2, 3, 4, 5), Her body is represented in frontal view, and comes down to the trunk and pelvis, with indication of the starting point of the thighs and the pubogenital triangle.

TRYON Abstract The Aurignacian technocomplex in Eurasia, dated to ~43-28 ka, has no direct archeological taxonomic equivalent in Africa during the same time interval, which may reflect differences in inter-group communication or differences in archeological definitions currently in use. Extinct hominin taxa are present in both Eurasia and Africa during this interval, but the African archeological record has played little role in discussions of the demographic expansion of Homo sapiens, unlike the Aurignacian. Sites in Eurasia and Africa by 42 ka show the earliest examples of personal ornaments that result from extensive modification of raw materials, a greater investment of time that may reflect increased their use in increasingly diverse and complex social networks.

From cognitive science, four mental prerequisites of religious cognition are discussed: (1) hyperactive agency detection, (2) theory of mind, (3) imagination, and (4) altered states of consciousness. Evidence for these prerequisites in nonhuman primates suggests their presence in our early hominin ancestors. From comparative psychology, evidence of ritual behavior in nonhuman primates and other species is reviewed. Archeological evidence of ritual behavior is also discussed. Collectively, these data indicate that the first step toward religion was an elaboration of primate social rituals to include group synchronized activities such as dancing, chanting, and singing. Control of fire, pigment use, and increasing brain size would have intensified group synchronized rituals over time, which, in the context of increased intergroup interactions, eventually led to the first evidence of supernatural ritual at about 70,000 years before present. Looking at a half-million-year-old Acheulean hand axe may tell us something about the maker’s technical skills, diet, hunting practices, and lifestyle, but very little about his or her beliefs—let alone the supernatural beliefs inherent to most religions.
