Calibration Centre for VOCs VOC Audit: Global GAW Station – Atmospheric Observatory Cape Verde, 2019 1 1 SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS 1.1 General A system and performance audit for VOCs was conducted at the Cabo Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVO) (co-organised by the Chemistry Department, University of York and by the World Calibration Centre for VOC, WCC-VOC). The audit was conducted from November 27th to December 2nd in year 2019. The observatory is operated as a global GAW station and analyses on-line air samples directly collected at the station towers. The audit was conducted according to the existing WMO/GAW guidelines and SOPs for audits . The audit directly involved the responsible site research scientist and the station manager. This report is for distribution to the station director, to the GAW Country Contact, to the WMO/GAW secretariat as well as to the QA/SAC-Germany. 1.2 Conclusions The station fully complies with WMO-GAW requirements set in the current implementation plan (WMO Report 228, 2017). The station managers are encouraged to maintain the excellent performance and ensure long-term operation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ WMO Global Atmosphere Watch World Calibration Centre for VOCs VOC Audit: Global GAW Station – Atmospheric Observatory Cape Verde, 2019 2 1.3 Summary Ranking of the VOC Audit at the Station CVO Adequacy (0 = inadequate () Audit Aspect Recommendations through 5 = adequate (■■■■■■)) Access ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Facilities ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Laboratory and office space ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Air conditioning ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Power supply ■■■■■■ Keep high standard General management and ■■■■■■ Keep high standard operation Organisation ■■■■■■ Keep high standard GAWTEC training Competence staff ■■■■■ encouraged Air inlet system ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Same tubing/connector material after the manifold; encouraged Instrumentation ■■■■■ OH/NO3 reactivity and formaldehyde measurements Trace gases ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Instrumental performance VOC ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Standards ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Data management ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Data acquisition ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Data processing ■■■■■■ Keep high standard oxyVOCs, DMS Data submission ■■■■■ encouraged Documentation ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Log books and internal ■■■■■■ Keep high standard instructions Web site ■■■■■■ Keep high standard Data availability and GAWSIS ■■■■ location update ________________________________________________________________________________________________ WMO Global Atmosphere Watch World Calibration Centre for VOCs VOC Audit: Global GAW Station – Atmospheric Observatory Cape Verde, 2019 3 2 INTRODUCTION The Cabo Verde Atmospheric Observatory (CVO) is operated by an international consortium with contributions of Cabo Verde, the United Kingdom and Germany. It is labelled as a global GAW Station according the specifications set in the WMO/GAW implementation plan (WMO Report 228) The tasks for the GAW-VOC network have been defined in WMO Report 171. The Data Quality Objectives (DQO) and quality control measures set out there in are used for QA/QC measures as agreed upon by the GAW Scientific Advisory Group for reactive Gases (SAG RG). In agreement with the station directors, the responsible scientists for the site and the station manager, a system and performance audit was conducted at
