It is important to know how to establish a critical distance from ourselves in order to glance at the essence of our inner selves. This glance allows us to see areas of personal weakness that make us learn from others. To a large extent, this was the rationale at the root of the project that we are launching today. The “Ubuntu Building Bridges for Peace” project emerged within the Er- asmus Program, one of the European community´s most emblematic ini- tiatives. The project left the European cultural and philosophical context and sought inspiration in another continent. Rooted in Africa Ubuntu is, nonetheless, mankind´s inheritance. We have tried to break away from an overly individualistic perspective that enforces independence of the individual as an absolute value, ​​and have highlighted interdependence and relationship as the main constituents of a Person. The understanding of us “becoming people” through our relationship with others, which in Ubuntu translates in the principle “I am because you are; I am only a Person through other Persons “ may help us rediscover the roots of European identity and of its political project. If we return to the foun- dations of the European project with the Schuman Declaration, at its core the understanding that only interdependence and, consequently, effective solidarity, can protect us from war: 1 President of IPAV 5 Building Bridges “(…) The solidarity in production thus established will make it plain that any war between France and Germany becomes not merely un- thinkable, but materially impossible. The setting up of this powerful productive unit, open to all countries willing to take part and bound ultimately to provide all the member countries with the basic elements of industrial production on the same terms, will lay a true foundation for their economic unification. This production will be offered to the world as a whole without distinction or exception, with the aim of contributing to raising living standards and to promoting peaceful achievements”. The year 2000 motto reinforced the European Union´s dream, “Unity in Diversity” - an European “Ubuntu”. It reaffirms that it is possible, respect- ing our multiple differences, to build a united and cohesive community and that our interdependence has become our strength and advantage. That is why the Ubuntu Building Bridges for Peace is very important to the European context, in times marked by speeches and structural policies on different walls to erect. We believe that Europe and the World need new models of leadership and citizenship, based on this ethics of care and the ability to build bridges rather than walls. The peace we all seek lies here: if we do not build bridges we will be fast on the way to the abyss. That’s why Europe needs Ubuntu. It has Ubuntu both in its history and in the origins of the European project with Monnet, Schuman, Adenauer or De Gaspieri – and it can also learn from others in Africa, Asia or anywhere else in the world. The project counted on the wisdom and experience of the Fundación Tomillo given its outstanding work with the most vulnerable populations; it counted also on the depth and knowledge of the Institute for Socratic Dialogue, given its capacity to make dialogue a powerful social transforma- tion tool. We´ve also added the irreplaceable experience of the Jesuit Refu- gee Service in Greece as an example of daily construction of bridges and of service, due to its work with the refugees it welcomes and supports. Also, 6 Ubuntu and Servant Leadership the contribution of the Instituto Padre António Vieira given its experience in designing and developing the Ubuntu Academy; Everis contributed with entrepreneurship knowledge and Forum Estudante contributed with its knowledge on the different realities of the youth. A consortium was thus consolidated setting to work and finishing the project in the founded hope that it is useful. The vision that was developed, the intellectual outputs created, the con- solidated non-formal education methodology or the experiences that are being proposed, allow us to believe on a path that although filled with human imperfection is a path worth treading. The echo received impels us further because, as Mandela said, at the end of his book “The Long Road to Freedom”, “after climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb”. 7 I Chapter Becoming Human 9 Ubuntu and Servant Leadership Opening roads 2 Carmen Garcia “I slept and dreamt that life was joy. Those who devote our professional life and a good part of our personal life to serve and, somehow, to promote the improvement of the world around us and the life of those who accompany us, frequently live moments of de- spair, frustration, impotence and tiredness facing the difficulty of changing reality and generating a relevant and permanent change. The passion or even the rationality that guided us to this labor of social improvement is, sometimes, hidden under a huge layer of tedious labor (organization, management…), immobility or difficulties of change of some ecosystem’s elements or even of those who we pretend to “help”. This situation is defined by Parker J. Palmer as the Tragic Gap: that space, that failure in the life soil in which we find ourselves between the reality of the moment- injustice, inequality, violence, ignorance…- and the possibility of something better that we know exists- responsibility, generosity, equality, knowledge…- In that area, we feel the great tension that can carry us from one end in which the more pessimist realism dominates, to the other end, inhabited by the most irrelevant idealism. The temptation of placing our- selves in one or the other shore or even of jumping from one to the other continually is more frequent that it might seem. 2 President of Tomillo Foundation - Spain 11 Building Bridges Stay in the gap, hold the tension and give space so that the proposal of change moves from what it is towards what it can be is a great value of those people who we consider true leaders serving the improvement of our society. Nelson Mandela is, without any doubt, a clear example of how to live in that gap and hold the tension so that a new possibility arises. Remain and advance in that space of tension requires strength, tenacity and, of course, self-knowledge. The knowledge of ourselves, listening our inner voice and understanding

I say broad because there is some academic scholarship that deals only with the existence of right wing organisations at the end of the apartheid era (du Toit 1991, Grobbelaar et al. 1989, Schönteich 2004, Schönteich and Boshoff 2003, van Rooyen 1994, Visser 2007, Welsh 1988, 1989,1995, Zille 1988). In this older context, this work focuses on a number of white Right organisations, including their ideas of nationalism, the role of Christianity in their ideologies, as well as their opposition to reform in South Africa, especially the significance of the idea of partition in these organisations. Helen Zille’s list, for example, includes the Herstigte Nasionale Party, Conservative Party, Afrikaner People’s Guard, South African Bureau of Racial Affairs (SABRA), Society of Orange Workers, Forum for the Future, Stallard Foundation, Afrikaner Resistance Movement (AWB), and the White Liberation Movement (BBB). There is also literature that deals with New Right ideology and its impact on South African education in the transition era by drawing on the broader literature on how the New Right was using education as a primary battleground globally (Fataar 1997, Kallaway 1989). Moreover, another narrow and newer literature exists that continues the focus on primarily extreme right organisations in South Africa that have found resonance in the global context of the rise of the so-called Alternative Right that rejects mainstream conservatism.

We thank you for the opportunity to comment. It is Council's opinion that many women are disabled because of neglect, abuse and violence and should be protected. Further more Women with Disabilities are one of the most marginalised groups and need to be empowered to take their rightful place in society. According to the United Nations World Programme of Action Concerning Disable Persons: "The consequences of deficiencies and disablement are particularly serious for women. There are a great many countries where women are subjected to social, cultural and economic disadvantages which impede their access to, for example, health care, education, vocational training and employment. If, in addition, they are physically or mentally disabled their chances of overcoming their disablement are diminished, which makes it all the more difficult for them to take part in community life. In families, the responsibility for caring for a disabled parent often lies with women, which considerably limits their freedom and their possibilities of taking part in other activities". The Nairobi Plan of Action for the 1990's also states: Disabled women all over the world are subject to dual discrimination: first, their gender assigns them second-class citizenship; then they are further devalued because of the negative and limited ways the world perceives people with disabilities. Legislation shall guarantee the rights of disabled women to be educated and make decisions about pregnancy, motherhood, adoption, and any medical procedure which affects their ability to reproduce.

    4 CHAPTER FOUR: THE AFRICAN UBUNTU PHILOSOPHY A person is a person through other persons. None of us comes into the world fully formed. We would not know how to think, or walk, or speak, or behave as human beings unless we learned it from other human beings. We need other human beings in order to be human. (Tutu, 2004:25). 4.1 INTRODUCTION Management practices and policies are not an entirely internal organisational matter, as various factors beyond the formal boundary of an organisation may be at least equally influential in an organisation’s survival. In this study, society, which includes the local community and its socio-cultural elements, is recognised as one of the main external stakeholders of an organisation (see the conceptual framework in Figure 1, on p. 7). Aside from society, organisations are linked to ecological systems that provide natural resources as another form of capital. As Section 3.5.13 shows, one of the most important limitations of the Balanced Scorecard model is that it does not integrate socio-cultural dimensions into its conceptual framework (Voelpel et al., 2006:51). The model’s perspectives do not explicitly address issues such as the society or the community within which an organisation operates. In an African framework, taking into account the local socio-cultural dimensions is critical for organisational performance and the ultimate success of an organisation. Hence, it is necessary to review this component of corporate performance critically before effecting any measures, such as redesigning the generic Balanced Scorecard model. It incorporates the concept of Ubuntu as an integrating model that can be paired up with other perspectives for directing employee workplace commitment. Research Design & Methods : A literature review entailing concepts related to cross - cultures and their relationship to Ubuntu and commitment was considered. The review spanning 50 years covered online-databases of global and African research. Findings: We argue here that the conceptualisation of Ubuntu is important in adapting currently accepted cultural frameworks as operationalised by individualism, collectiv- ism and power distance dimensions for regional management application. Ubuntu col- lective values (compassion, survival, group solidarity, respect and dignity), which relate affirmatively with a sense of workplace collectivism, was identified as a unique element of cultural management philosophy for directing personal interactions, workplace com- mitment and performance management improvements. Implications & Recommendations: Ubuntu should be facilitated by managers as a motivational force that facilitates workplace commitment ensuring organisa- tional team performance. The implications of Ubuntu in the context of extending existing theories of individualism-collectivism and power distance cannot be over- stated. Contribution & Value Added: A model based on relationships between Ubuntu collec- tive values and EWC, applicable with contextual managerial frameworks. A core premise of this study is that there exists, in post-apartheid South Africa, a stark discursive disjuncture between what has emerged as a hegemonic liberal democratic constitutional discourse and the discourse of liberation that served as the ideological pivot of the anti- colonial struggles. Animated by this premise, this study asks why it is that liberation as a framing set of ideas has either played no part or exerted so little obvious influence on how post-apartheid South Africa self-comprehends and organises itself in constitutive terms? Recognising that the formal end of colonial-apartheid as a system in 1994 inaugurated a seismic shift in the country’s constitutional discourse as the notion of constitutionalism took centre stage, this study seeks to problematize this idea by examining its underlying assumptions, connotations and import as deployed in mainstream South African academic and public discourses.
