Reform is needed and this dissertation takes the position that the challenges to and desirable characteristics of leadership are understood and can be influenced by Africans living in the Diaspora. To explore the challenges and possible solutions, four focus groups were convened drawing on Diasporic Africans living in Rhode Island in the United States. Each group meeting was facilitated by the researcher and discussed several questions about the most needed changes in leadership in Africa today. These concerned the most desirable characteristics in political leadership in Africa and how Diasporic African leaders can support leadership improvement in Africa. All group discussions began with consideration of the philosophy and relevance of Ubuntu a tradition-based perspective that has re-emerged through Africa in the last 30 years. Groups discussed how leadership renewal and improvement related to reviving practices based on Ubuntu. Transcripts from these sessions were analyzed for the number of mentions of particular ideas. Results were condensed into clusters of related ideas and themes for purposes of discussion. The top responses to the first question about challenges were about incompetence; corruption; and the exclusion of good leaders and officials because of sexism, tribalism, and nepotism. The leading responses to the second question on desirable leadership characteristics emphasiZed honesty, personal qualities of leaders, achieving visionary leadership, and enacting democratic values. In response to the third question of involving the Diaspora, a diverse range of ways in which help would be given were enumerated.     2018, Vol. 6, No. 3 10.15678/EBER.2018.060312 Towards a Collective-Values Framework of Ubuntu: Implications for Workplace Commitment Thembisile Molose, Geoff Goldman, Peta Thomas A B S T R A C T Objective : This research offers an extension of current research on commitment across cultures. It incorporates the concept of Ubuntu as an integrating model that can be paired up with other perspectives for directing employee workplace commitment. Research Design & Methods : A literature review entailing concepts related to cross - cultures and their relationship to Ubuntu and commitment was considered. The review spanning 50 years covered online-databases of global and African research. Findings: We argue here that the conceptualisation of Ubuntu is important in adapting currently accepted cultural frameworks as operationalised by individualism, collectiv- ism and power distance dimensions for regional management application. Ubuntu col- lective values (compassion, survival, group solidarity, respect and dignity), which relate affirmatively with a sense of workplace collectivism, was identified as a unique element of cultural management philosophy for directing personal interactions, workplace com- mitment and performance management improvements. Implications & Recommendations: Ubuntu should be facilitated by managers as a motivational force that facilitates workplace commitment ensuring organisa- tional team performance. The implications of Ubuntu in the context of extending existing theories of individualism-collectivism and power distance cannot be over- stated. Contribution & Value Added: A model based on relationships between Ubuntu collec- tive values and EWC, applicable with contextual managerial frameworks. This study examines the appropriation of colonial images of black individuals and bodies for commodification in twenty- first century South African décor and fabric design. A prominent trend in post-apartheid visual design, the re- purposing and commodification of archival photographs, and its circulation within local and global image economies and design markets demand further research and comprehensive theorising.

Jolley Southern Utah University Spring 2011 HUMAN BEING P a g e | 2 Abstract This discussion presents human communication, locally and globally, in relation to theory and experience. Thus questions arise such as, why does violence and conflict reign in society when social media allows efficient communication? It is also evident that expensive ongoing research of theory has not assisted human communication and statistics do show a decline in human communication. Thus, the question of how much human communication theory is available and applied to the regular man? Clearly the questions of where, when, and who, teaches human communication in society to improve relationships? Furthermore, the ideas of past and present researchers, and a contribution of personal experience of 39 years in apartheid, on board a ship for 25000 miles with 50 different cultures, living in France for 18 months, and traveling independently around the world, found individuals in these societies lacking in human communication. Therefore, a solution to the dilemma is an exotic African philosophy called "Ubuntu," or in other words, to be humane. Ubuntu embellishes cultural beliefs and values and is the essence of being human. It comes in many guises in many cultures. Initially Ubuntu created in African villages to knit together humans with respect and love, and effectively strengthened human intrapersonal communication and communication with others, including family and community, and thus, strengthened town and country. Although present atrocities evident by the absence of Ubuntu communication are prevalent in Africa and significantly obvious throughout the world, attention is imperative and necessary to be humane to one another to prevent this decline.
