    Still performing and still in demand, the years have been good to Smokey Robinson. Soul Survivor by Steve Dale It's 1958: A 17-year old songwriter from Detroit named Smokey Robinson, and his high school chums, who call themselves The Miracles, release the first record ever on a new label called Motown. The song is called "Get a Job." It's not a hit record, but it sure proves important. "Get a Job" turns out to be a prophetic title, since it helps to create work, and a whole direction for Motown founder and President Berry Gordy. Before long the Motown label provides work for the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Vandellas, Pips, and all the others. Meanwhile, The Miracles record hit records. In 1972 Robinson leaves the group to work behind the scenes for Gordy at Motown, and to embark on a solo career. He has never stopped touring, at least not for very long. It seems that audiences can't get enough of Smokey Robinson. Before a recent appearance at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, IN, Robinson talks with Steve Dale on the phone from his Motown office in Los Angeles. Steve Oale: You're a survivor. Billboard: What's the origin of the nickname "Smokey?" Smokey Robinson: My favorite uncle, who was also my godfather, gave it to me when I was 3 years old. I used to love cowboys; that was my thing -- especially the ones who sang. And he would always take me to see cowboy movies. His cowboy name for me was Smokey Joe.
