  • Biography Armed with Some of the Greatest Songs Ever Written, The
Biography Armed with some of the greatest songs ever written, The Miracles are still after 40 years, attracting enthusiastic audiences around the world. Motown’s first of many famous groups such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, The Commodores, and The Jackson Five, and of course The Miracles the very first group to sign to Motown records, continue to keep the Motown sound alive by performing songs, such as: “Shop Around”, “I Second That Emotion”, “Tears Of A Clown”, “Love Machine”, “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me”, “The Tracks Of My Tears”, “Ooh Baby Baby” and many more. Their performances at the Nassau Coliseum, the Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C. and the 4th of July celebration at Duke University with over 60,000 fans in attendance, was simply unbelievable. In 1956, Bobby Rogers, Smokey Robinson, Claudette Robinson, Ronnie White and Pete Moore, childhood friends became The Miracles, and embarked on a career that would surpass their wildest dreams. Berry Gordy Motown’s founder recorded and released “Shop Around” a number one smash on all the charts, establishing The Miracles and giving Motown their first gold seller, this was the beginning of the record company and the group success for many years to come. The Miracles and Motown Records became known throughout the entire world. Over the course of the years, The Miracles continued to record chart-topping hits, including “Ooo Baby Baby”, “Going To A Go-Go”, “More Love”, “Mickey’s Monkey” and “Tears Of A Clown”. The Miracles established themselves as one of the best groups of all times.

  • Soul Survivor by Steve Dale
Still performing and still in demand, the years have been good to Smokey Robinson. Soul Survivor by Steve Dale It's 1958: A 17-year old songwriter from Detroit named Smokey Robinson, and his high school chums, who call themselves The Miracles, release the first record ever on a new label called Motown. The song is called "Get a Job." It's not a hit record, but it sure proves important. "Get a Job" turns out to be a prophetic title, since it helps to create work, and a whole direction for Motown founder and President Berry Gordy. Before long the Motown label provides work for the Supremes, Four Tops, Temptations, Vandellas, Pips, and all the others. Meanwhile, The Miracles record hit records. In 1972 Robinson leaves the group to work behind the scenes for Gordy at Motown, and to embark on a solo career. He has never stopped touring, at least not for very long. It seems that audiences can't get enough of Smokey Robinson. Before a recent appearance at the Holiday Star Theatre in Merrillville, IN, Robinson talks with Steve Dale on the phone from his Motown office in Los Angeles. Steve Oale: You're a survivor. Print Story: Smokey Robinson celebrates 50 years by "Having Fun" - Yahoo! News Page 1 of 4 PRINT Back to story Smokey Robinson celebrates 50 years by "Having Fun" By Gail Mitchell Fri Aug 21, 7:46 pm ET LOS ANGELES (Billboard) – The songs alone speak volumes. "Shop Around." "You've Really Got a Hold on Me." "Ooo Baby Baby." "The Tracks of My Tears." "I Second That Emotion." "The Tears of a Clown." "My Guy." "My Girl." "Cruisin'." "Being With You." These are just a handful of the classics written and, in many cases, uniquely interpreted by William "Smokey" Robinson. The singer-songwriter is celebrating his 50th anniversary in music this year, as is the iconic label Motown Records. On the eve of the release Tuesday of Robinson's new studio album, "Time Flies When You're Having Fun," on his own ROBSO Records, Billboard talked to the man behind the beloved tunes. Billboard: What's the origin of the nickname "Smokey?" Smokey Robinson: My favorite uncle, who was also my godfather, gave it to me when I was 3 years old. I used to love cowboys; that was my thing -- especially the ones who sang. And he would always take me to see cowboy movies. His cowboy name for me was Smokey Joe. Whenever anybody asked me what my name was, I'd tell them "Smokey Joe." The Joe dropped off when I became 12. Billboard: When did you first know you wanted to be a singer-songwriter? Robinson: I have felt like that since I was 4 years old.
