Biography Armed with Some of the Greatest Songs Ever Written, The Biography Armed with some of the greatest songs ever written, The Miracles are still after 40 years, attracting enthusiastic audiences around the world. Motown’s first of many famous groups such as The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Supremes, The Commodores, and The Jackson Five, and of course The Miracles the very first group to sign to Motown records, continue to keep the Motown sound alive by performing songs, such as: “Shop Around”, “I Second That Emotion”, “Tears Of A Clown”, “Love Machine”, “You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me”, “The Tracks Of My Tears”, “Ooh Baby Baby” and many more. Their performances at the Nassau Coliseum, the Inaugural Gala in Washington, D.C. and the 4th of July celebration at Duke University with over 60,000 fans in attendance, was simply unbelievable. In 1956, Bobby Rogers, Smokey Robinson, Claudette Robinson, Ronnie White and Pete Moore, childhood friends became The Miracles, and embarked on a career that would surpass their wildest dreams. Berry Gordy Motown’s founder recorded and released “Shop Around” a number one smash on all the charts, establishing The Miracles and giving Motown their first gold seller, this was the beginning of the record company and the group success for many years to come. The Miracles and Motown Records became known throughout the entire world. Over the course of the years, The Miracles continued to record chart-topping hits, including “Ooo Baby Baby”, “Going To A Go-Go”, “More Love”, “Mickey’s Monkey” and “Tears Of A Clown”. The Miracles established themselves as one of the best groups of all times. In 1971, Smokey Robinson announced his retirement to spend time with his growing family. Billy Griffin replaced him and The Miracles continued to be successful recording hit records, with such renowned producers as Marvin Gaye, Willie Hutch and Freddie Perren. In the fall of 1976 their hits consisted of “Do It Baby” and "Love Machine”, The Miracles were now on top of the POP, R&B and DISCO charts. The Miracles timeless music gained in popularity through movie soundtracks such as “The Big Chill”, “Platoon” and “Donnie Brasco”. (In 1993, Motown honored the group with a 35th anniversary retrospective greatest hits CD box set). In 1978 upon the departure of Billy Griffin, the group, consisting of Pete Moore, Bobby Rogers and Ronnie White auditioned a young man right out of college (Long Beach State University), by the name of Sydney Justin. He was chosen as The Miracles lead vocalist, but had a prior commitment to play in the NFL with the Los Angeles Rams. Sydney had a rewarding but short-lived professional football career (four years), due to an injury, but not before he had a chance to earn a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl XIV. 1985 After his retirement from Pro Football, Sydney signed with the vocal pop group “Shalamar”. He recorded, wrote and produced songs on their last two CD’s and performed concerts around the globe. During this time Sydney also sang, produced and wrote songs for movie sound tracks such as “Wild Cats” featuring Goldie Hawn and also the movie “Lambada” In 1994, as faith would have it, Bobby Rogers and Claudette Robinson again would locate Sydney Justin on a quest to reunite The Miracles. Sydney’s style is reminiscent of a cross between Smokey Robinson & Marvin Gaye, along with Bobby Rogers, Ron White and Claudette Robinson, The Miracles embarked on a second wave of success. Unfortunately, in 1995 Ron White one of the original members lost a fourteen-month battle with leukemia and was unable to see the groups continued success and legendary performances with new lead singer Sydney Justin. Sydney Justin and The Miracles have made many television appearances such as: The Today Show, Good Morning America, George & Alana, Donnie Osmond, the Pat Bullard show, and the Home & Family show, just to name a few. They also have two nationwide television commercials running to date (Denny’s & Oil Dispatch). They have performed in Las Vegas casino’s, (The Rio, Star Dust, etc., and also the Freemont Street Experience) Washington D.C.’s Constitution Hall and in The Library of Congress, (where they were the first R&B group to be inducted). They have also toured throughout Europe with the United States Air Force Orchestra and many, many concerts, and private corporate functions throughout the United States. In February 1997, they received the “Pioneer Award” from the Rhythm & Blues Foundation and a star was placed on the Hollywood Boulevard "Walk of Fame". Recently they were voted Detroit’s first Motown group to be commemorated on it's "Walk of Fame", Sydney Justin and The Miracles recently recorded a new Greatest hits CD, a Live CD performance, and a Christmas Holliday CD with songs that include: “ Silent Night, White Christmas, Feliz Navidad, Frosty The Snow Man, We Wish You A Merry Christmas, The Christmas Song" and many others including two new original songs” My Favorite Time Of Year" and "Finally Christmas” written by Sydney Justin. It's not surprising that The Miracles featuring Sydney Justin are loved throughout the world for the extraordinary music and electrifying stage performances. Even Berry Gordy has giving Sydney Justin the endorsement as one of Motown’s brightest stars. The Miracles line up today: Sydney Justin, Kerry Justin, Cordell Conway, and Eric Swindell are the best ever. With great harmonies and stunning choreography. This act is beyond fantastic. The Miracles featuring Sydney Justin has been seen and admired by millions on the PBS television specials and continue to share The Miracles around the world. …AND MIRACLES CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. .

west coast music Midnight Special Please find attached the Midnight Special song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES for Weddings: Please note that we will need your special dance requests, (I.E. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, Mother/Son Dance etc) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and that we are able to locate sheet music. In some cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is need- ed, this gives us the time needed to properly prepare the music and learn the material. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. Recently, we’ve noticed in increase in cli- ents customizing what the band plays and doesn’t play with very specific detail. If you de- sire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we ask for a minimum of 100 requests. We want you to keep in mind that the band is quite good at reading the room and choosing songs that best connect with your guests. The more specific/selective you are, know that there is greater chance of losing certain song medleys, mashups, or newly released material the band has.

  • “My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (Guest Post)*
“My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

  • On the Surface, the Story of Jordan Moore Has Been Told Countless Times Before
On the surface, the story of Jordan Moore has been told countless times before. Small town boy with big time dreams packs his entire life in the back of a U-Haul and drives to Nashville in search of a better life than the one he’s living. But this is no ordinary story. The story of Jordan Moore is a story of second chances and crazy coincidences. It’s a story of a guy who could have given up a thousand times. It’s a story of a man whose life has always been somehow divinely directed by God above. In short, the story of Jordan Moore is nothing short of extraordinary. Of course, every story has a beginning, and this story begins in the little town of Lowell, Michigan. The youngest of five children, Moore spent his days playing outside and singing in the church. When he wasn’t doing that, he was painting pictures and drawing characters he would dream up in his head. And for as long as Moore can remember, his dad always seemed to have a guitar in his hand, and had once dreamed of a day he could follow his own music dreams. But that was never part of his story. Instead, Moore’s father infused the love of music into all of his kids, encouraging them to let music play some sort of role in their life. Heck, many a Saturday afternoon was spent driving Moore himself to the local retirement home to entertain the senior citizens hungry for some sensory overload.

ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LACY, TRAVIS K. B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. Offering overblown fantasies of black power and heroism filmed on the sites of race rebellions of the late 1960s, blaxploitation films were objects of fierce debate among social leaders and commentators for the image of blackness they projected, in both its aesthetic character and its social and political utility. After some time spent as the "bad object" of African-American cinema history,[1] critical and theoretical interest in blaxploitation resurfaced in the 1990s, in part due to the way that its images-- and sounds--recirculated in contemporary film and music cultures. Since the early 1990s, a new generation of African-American filmmakers has focused
