Department The University of Vancouver, Canada Date DE-6 (2/88) Abstract This thesis investigates Italian instrumental music (specifically piano music) during the two decades between the two World Wars, the period of Italian fascism under Mussolini's rule. After two centuries of opera domination in that country, instrumental music, especially an up-to- date brand of it, was sorely lacking. A number of composers recognized this need and began to effect changes in the instrumental music scene, some with more success than others. Most of these composers are not well known to the general music public today. The pressing question is, to what extent the fascist government and its culture had an effect on the development of music during this period.

  • Sardinian Composers of Contemporary Music
Interdisciplinary Studies in Musicology 12,2012 © PTPN & Wydawnictwo Naukowe UAM, Poznań 2012 CONSUELO GIGLIO Music Conservatory, Trapani Sardinian composers of contemporary music ABSTRACT: The meeting point between the school headed by Franco Oppo and the rich traditional music of the island gave birth in Sardinia to an intense flowering in the field of New Music, with a strong feeling of belonging and a constant call for a positive concept of identity. Thus, since the time of Oppo (1935) and his contemporary Vittorio Montis, we come across many composers that differ between each other but are almost always recognizably “Sardinian”. Oppo has been one of the most interesting figures on the international scene during the last few decades. After his studies in Rome, Venice and Poland in the early 1960s, he remained, by his own choice, in his home territory, sharing his “Sardinian-ness” in a free and dialectic manner with the avant-garde. After formulating his own particular aleatory approach, Oppo reached a turning point halfway through the 1970s: in Musica per chitarra e quartetto d’archi, Praxodia and, finally, in Anninnia I, the meeting point between avant-garde research and the special phonic quality of tra ditional music became more and more close-knit and organic, at the same time also acting on the founding language structure whilst still remaining under the control of incisive and informed dis ciplines (during the same period, moreover, he put forward new methodologies of analysis which were also necessary for his teaching). In this sense the most important works are chamber pieces like Anninnia I and II (1978, 1982), Attitidu (1983) and Sagra (1985), the theatrical work Eleonora d’Arborea (1986), some piano “transcriptions” - the Three berceuses (1982), Gallurese and Baroniese (1989; 1993) - Trio III (1994), Sonata B for percussion and piano (2005) and the two Concerts for piano and orchestra (1995-97; 2002).

Textual and Musical Intermedialities in Italian Literature and Film by Erika Marina Nadir Doctor of Philosophy in Italian University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Luigi Ballerini, Chair This dissertation is a comparative study of Italian opera, literature, and film, and traces the textual and musical intermedialities among the art forms. Using the analytical prisms of Elio Vittorini’s linguaggio unitario del musicista and Giuseppe Verdi’s notion of verità, I examine the myriad ways that literature, film, and music interact and the effects on the respective arts. Chapter 1 focuses on literature that is written in such a way as to evoke music. I analyze three texts and their musical components: Vittorini’s Italian Resistance novel, Uomini e no; the postmodern novel Passavamo sulla terra leggeri by Sergio Atzeni—a soundscape of text that mimics contemporary opera structure; and Manzoni’s I promessi sposi, which was the inspiration for Giuseppe Verdi’s notion of verità in art.

But does this mean I must eschew Other truths? From ‘The Bats of Wombat State Forest’ in Wild Familiars (2006) by Liana Christensen 3 4 ABSTRACT The revival since the early 1990s of Southern Italian folk traditions has seen the ‘rediscovery’ and active recuperation, especially by urban revivalist actors, of le tradizioni popolari, popular traditional practices originating in peasant society which are still practiced by some traditional local actors in remote rural areas of Southern Italy. This thesis draws on interviews, participant observation and historical research carried out mainly during fieldwork in Rome and Southern Italy in 2002-3 to present an ethnography of the urban revivalist subculture which has been the main driving force behind the contemporary Southern Italian folk revival. In the course of my enquiry into why the movement has emerged, I combine both synchronic and diachronic perspectives, as well as a phenomenological analysis of revivalist motivation and agency, to explore the question of why contemporary urban revivalists have begun to take an interest in the archaic and marginalised cultural practices of rural Southern Italy.
