Clint I\I!iller Assistant Executive Director Martinez-Holler, Ana Subject: zubin mehta bio In anticipation of his 50,h anniversary of his conducting debut with the Israel Philharmonic and the 75'" anniversary of the founding of the Israel Philharmonic, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will honor international orchestral and operatic conductor, Zuhin Mehta with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on March 1, 2011. Mehta's tour begins in Florida on February 20, 2011. Mehta was born in Bombay, India and received his early musical education under his father Mehli Mehta, who was a noted concert violinist and the founder of the Bombay Symphony Orchestra. After a short period of pre-medical studies, he left for Vienna in 1954 where he eventually entered the conducting program at the Akademie fur Musik. Mehta won the Liverpool International Conducting Competition in 1958 and was also a prize-winner of the summer academy at Tanglewood. By 1961 he had already conducted the Vienna, Berlin and Israel Philharmonic Orchestras and will be celebrating 50 years of musical collaboration with all three ensembles. Mehta was Music Director of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra from 1961 to 1967 and also assumed the Music Directorship of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 1962, a post he retained until 1978. In 1969 he was appointed Music Adviser to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and was made Music Director of that orchestra in 1977. In 1981 the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra awarded him the title of Music Director for Life. He has conducted more than 3,000 concerts with this extraordinary ensemble including tours spanning five continents. In 1978 he took over the post of Music Director of the New York Philharmonic commencing a tenure lasting 13 years, the longest in the orchestra's history. Since 1985, he has been chief conductor of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. Mehta made his debut as an opera conductor with Tosca in Montreal in 1963. Since then he has conducted at the Metropolitan Opera New York, the Vienna State Opera, the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, La Scala Milan, and the opera houses of Chicago and Florence as well as at the Salzburg Festival, Between 1998 and 2006 he was Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. In October, 2006, he opened the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia in Valencia and is since then the President of the annual Festival del Mediterrani in Valencia, Mehta's list of awards and honors is extensive and includes the "Nikisch-Ring", bequeathed to him by Karl Bohm. He is an honorary citizen of both Florence and Tel Aviv and was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera in 1997, of the Bavarian State Opera in 2006 and of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Wien in 2007. The title of "Honorary Conductor" was bestowed to him by the following orchestras: Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (2001), Munich Philharmonic Orchestra (2004), Los Angeles Philharmonic (2006), Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (2006), Bavarian State Orchestra (2006). In October, 2008, Zubin Mehta was honored by the Japanese Imperial Family with the "Praernium Imperiale". In 2006 he joined a most prestigious group of esteemed artists as a Kennedy Center Honoree. Mehta continues to support the discovery and furtherance of musical talents all over the world. Together with his brother Zarin, he is a co-chairman of the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation in Bombay where more than 200 children are educated in Western Classical Music. The Buchmann-Mehta School of Music in Tel Aviv develops young talent in Israel and is closely 1 related to the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, as is a new project of teaching young Arab Israelis in the cities of Shwaram and Nazareth with local teachers and members of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Johnson (212) 875-5718; [email protected] FORMER MUSIC DIRECTOR ZUBIN MEHTA TO RETURN TO NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC RAVI SHANKAR’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra With ANOUSHKA SHANKAR as Soloist SCHUBERT’s Symphony in C major, Great November 3–5, 2016 Former Music Director Zubin Mehta will return to the New York Philharmonic to conduct Schubert’s Symphony in C major, Great, and Ravi Shankar’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra, with soloist Anoushka Shankar, the composer’s daughter, in her Philharmonic debut. The program will take place Thursday, November 3, 2016, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, November 4 at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, November 5 at 8:00 p.m. The Philharmonic commissioned and premiered Shankar’s Rāgā-Mālā Concerto No. 2, for Sitar and Orchestra, in April 1981, with the composer as soloist in his Philharmonic debut and led by then Music Director Zubin Mehta, to whom the work is dedicated. Rāgā-Mālā translates to “Garland of Ragas”; in Indian classical music, a raga is a mode, of which there are more than 300. Zubin Mehta and Ravi Shankar discussed the work in 1981 in Ovation magazine. Abstract This thesis fills a gap in the empirical study of elite philanthropy which to date has been confined to mostly Western philanthropy, informed by Christian and Jewish norms and traditions. This research explores a tradition and practice of philanthropy which has its early roots in dharmic and Islamic tradition yet, as is shown, has been influenced by Western rules and norms. Twenty-eight philanthropists were interviewed. The two religions these respondents most identified with were Hindu or Parsi, though some identified as Jain, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist. The research applies a theoretical framework described as a moral citizenship. This framework brings together two theoretical models developed by Schervish - identification theory and moral biography (Schervish et al. 1998; Schervish and Havens 1997; Schervish and Havens 2001b, 2002; Schervish and Herman 1988; Schervish et al. 2001). These models, they argue, provide the most fruitful way to identify the social and psychological frameworks that mobilise the agency of philanthropists. The methodology used to apply this theoretical framework used long interviews in which respondents were given free rein to talk about their philanthropic activity in their own terms.     1. RAVI SHANKAR Ravi Shankar (7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012), often referred to by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who played thesitar, a plucked string instrument. He has been described as the best-known contemporary Indian musician. He spent his youth touring Europe and India with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956. In 1956, he began to tour Europe and the Americas playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and rock artist George Harrison of the Beatles. Shankar engaged Western music by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992 he served as a nominated member of Rajya Sabha, the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999, and received three Grammy Awards. He continued to perform in the 2000s, sometimes with his younger daughter, Anoushka. Career Shankar developed a style distinct from that of his contemporaries and incorporated influences from rhythm practices of Carnatic music. His performances begin with solo alap, jor, and jhala (introduction and performances with pulse and rapid pulse) influenced by the slow and serious dhrupad genre, followed by a section with tabla accompaniment featuring compositions associated with the prevalent khyal style.
