Orchestra Kentucky 11 PROGRAM NOTES

February 15, 2020 THE MEMPHIS SOUND The Memphis sound, also known as Memphis soul, was the most prominent strain of Southern soul music. It is a shimmering, sultry style produced in the 1960s and 1970s at Stax Records and Hi Records in Memphis, Tennessee, featuring melodic unison horn lines, organ, guitar, bass, and a driving beat on the drums. It is a combination of rockabilly and country, blended with rock and roll. It has sometimes been called a blend of bluegrass with rock and roll. Many of the songs in this style were performed by vocalists backed by the house bands of Stax, and Hi Records. The Memphis soul sound was different from the Detroit Motown sound, which used violins, and other instruments that were not used much in Memphis soul. Of the approximately 800 singles and 300 LP Memphis soul recordings from Stax, there were 166 Top 100 songs in the pop charts and 265 Top 100 hits in the R&B charts, nine of them Grammy winners. The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is dedicated to preserving the Memphis sound. Many of the songs of this era, along with members of the original rhythm section, resurfaced in the movie The Blues Brothers (1980). After the rise of disco in the late 1970s, Memphis Soul declined somewhat in popularity.

Orchestra Kentucky 19 PROGRAM NOTES

March 28, 2020 RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre- writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the “golden age” of musical theatre. Five of their Broadway Shows, Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music, were outstanding successes, as was the television broadcast of Cinderella (1957). Most of their shows have received frequent revivals around the world, both professional and amateur. Their shows (and film versions) have received thirty-four Tony Awards, fifteen Academy Awards, the Pulitzer Prize, and two Grammy Awards. Their musical theatre writing partnership has been called the greatest of the 20th century. Prior to their partnership, both Rodgers and Hammerstein achieved success with other partners: Rodgers with Lorenz Hart, and Hammerstein with Rudolf Friml. Rodgers and Hammerstein re-worked the musical theatre genre. Early 20th-century musicals were usually whimsical or farcical, and typically built around a star performer. Because the efforts of Rodgers and Hammerstein were so successful, many musicals that followed contained thought-provoking plots with mature themes in which all the aspects of the play, dance, song, and drama were combined in an integrated whole. Rodgers and Hammerstein also used the technique of what some call the “formula musical,” which may refer to a musical with a predictable plot, but also refers to the casting requirements of Rodgers & Hammerstein characters. Typically, any musical from this team will have the casting of a strong baritone lead, a dainty and light soprano lead, a supporting lead tenor, and a supporting alto lead. Although there are exceptions to this, it simplifies the audition process, and gives audiences an idea of what to expect vocally from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

MAY 16, 2020 MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS John Williams (1932), an American composer, conductor, and pianist, is considered by many to be the most successful, versatile and prolific film composer in history. He is given credit for reviving the big Hollywood orchestra film score, which had languished since the demise of studio orchestras during the 1950s and ’60s. With a career spanning over six decades, he has composed some of the most popular, recognizable, and critically-acclaimed film scores in cinematic history, including those of the Star Wars series, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, E.T.: the Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones series, the first two Home Alone films, Hook, the first two Jurassic Park films, Schindler’s List, and the first three Harry Potter films. Williams has been associated with director Steven Spielberg since 1974, composing music for all but four of his feature films, theme music for four Olympic games, the theme for NBC Nightly News, and a piece for the Barack Obama inauguration. Williams has won 25 Grammy Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, five Academy Awards, and four Golden Globes. With fifty-two Academy Award nominations Williams is, after Walt Disney, the second most nominated individual. In 2005, the American Film Institute selected Williams’s score to 1977’s Star Wars as the greatest American film score of all time. The soundtrack to Star Wars was additionally preserved by the Library of Congress into the National Recording Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” Williams was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl’s Hall of Fame in 2000, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2004 and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2016. In addition to composing the score for eight of the top 20 highest-grossing films at the U.S. box office, Williams has also composed numerous classical concertos and other works for orchestral ensembles and solo instruments. He served as the Boston Pops’ principal conductor from 1980 to 1993, and is currently the orchestra’s laureate conductor. Tonight, the orchestra will play music from some of his most popular film scores.
