10 must knows when starting German genealogy

• Always look at Church records • There was no national census in Germany in C18th or C19th • If your surname has an ae oe or ue it might have had an umlaut • Get a useful word list for German words • Get a useful word list for Latin ones words • Be flexible on spelling • Be more specific than just Prussia • Graves are re-cycled every 20-30 years • Lots of towns have the same name, be careful to research in the right one • Not everything is online, use maps, books and gazetteers too

Meyers Gazetteer Online www.meyersgaz.org • A wonderful print finding aid to German geographical information. • Available online in digital format • Searchable and much easier to use than the print version especially for those whose skills are weak. • Modern script version of Meyers Orts- und Verkehrs-lexikon des deutschen Reichs (commonly known simply as Meyers or Meyer’s Gazetteer of the ). • Explains the text and various abbreviations in the town entry that are found in the original printed version of Meyers, and pin-points the location of the town on both historic and modern maps, indicates parishes to which residents of the town would have belonged, and notes the distance from the town to all parishes within a 20- miles radius. • This database also allows users to search for a town using wildcards. This is especially useful when the exact spelling of a town is not known. If you have a common town name such as Mülheim, you can filter the search results by province.

www.Kartenmeister.com

• Kartenmeister is a database for towns which are found east of the Oder and Neisse rivers in the former German Empire provinces of East Prussia, , Brandenburg, Posen, Pomerania, and Silesia. • This area is now part of modern Poland. The database allows users to search for towns using either their German or Polish name. Using Gross Gardienen as an example town, we learn that the Polish name for the town is now Gardyny and is located in the Warminsko- Mazurskie province. • Like MeyersGaz.org, collaboration between users is encouraged. Individuals can enter their email address into a mailing list according to the town they are interested in and specify surnames they are researching in that town.

The German Genealogy Facebook Group (not Jewish!) www.facebook.com/groups/GermanGenealogy • The group, classified as a “closed group” that users can ask to be accepted in, is a typical moderated social media thread. Those approved for the group can post relating to German genealogy— sometimes including historical photos and other times “just for fun” items they’ve found in their research. • The group, boasting more than 15,000 members, describes itself as a forum for “networking with those conducting German genealogical research, in order to provide help and resources to others researching German genealogy.”

Research Strategies to Find your Ancestral Location in Germany • Learn about research in your specific area on Familysearch Wiki • When searching for a hometown, consider social network (chain migration) and DNA for complex challenges • Use maps to understand location and geography of your ancestral village • Investigate German language genealogy websites for your specific area • Check if there is an local community history available • For civil registration (after 1874) search Ancestry’s collection and Polish archives • Consider searching archives for other types of records, such as court, tax, and estate records. Try search word combinations such as [surname] [village name] or [occupation]. These records are rarely online but you may be able to order them.

Bremer Passagierlisten 1920 - 1939

• www.schiffslisten.de • Also available partially in English! • Unfortunately, all lists from 1875 - 1908 older than 3 years were destroyed due to lack of space in the Bremen Archives. • With the exception of 3017 passenger lists for the years 1920 - 1939 all other lists were lost in World War II. • These saved lists had been stowed away in a salt mine at Bernburg an der Saale in 1942 together with other archives for the purpose of protection, and were transferred into the custody of Moscow Archives at the end of WW II. In 1987 and 1990 those lists were given back to the Bremen Chamber of Commerce.
