Malaysia: the 2020 Putsch for Malay Islam Supremacy James Chin School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania
Malaysia: the 2020 putsch for Malay Islam supremacy James Chin School of Social Sciences, University of Tasmania ABSTRACT Many people were surprised by the sudden fall of Mahathir Mohamad and the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government on 21 February 2020, barely two years after winning the historic May 2018 general elections. This article argues that the fall was largely due to the following factors: the ideology of Ketuanan Melayu Islam (Malay Islam Supremacy); the Mahathir-Anwar dispute; Mahathir’s own role in trying to reduce the role of the non-Malays in the government; and the manufactured fear among the Malay polity that the Malays and Islam were under threat. It concludes that the majority of the Malay population, and the Malay establishment, are not ready to share political power with the non- Malays. Introduction Many people were shocked when the Barisan National (BN or National Front) govern- ment lost its majority in the May 2018 general elections. After all, BN had been in power since independence in 1957 and the Federation of Malaysia was generally regarded as a stable, one-party regime. What was even more remarkable was that the person responsible for Malaysia’s first regime change, Mahathir Mohammad, was also Malaysia’s erstwhile longest serving prime minister. He had headed the BN from 1981 to 2003 and was widely regarded as Malaysia’s strongman. In 2017, he assumed leader- ship of the then-opposition Pakatan Harapan (PH or Alliance of Hope) coalition and led the coalition to victory on 9 May 2018. He is remarkable as well for the fact that he became, at the age of 93, the world’s oldest elected leader.1 The was great hope that Malaysia would join the global club of democracy but less than two years on, the PH government fell apart on 21 February 2020. -

He was found guilty on both counts and sentenced, in 1999 and 2000 respectively, to a total of 15 years in prison. On 2 September 2004, the Federal Court quashed the conviction in the sodomy case and ordered Mr. Anwar Ibrahim’s release, as he had already served his sentence in the abuse of power case. The IPU had arrived at the conclusion that the motives for Mr. Anwar Ibrahim’s prosecution were not legal in nature and that the case had been built on a presumption of guilt; - Mr. Anwar Ibrahim was re-elected in August 2008 and May 2013 and became the de facto leader of the opposition Pakatan Rakyat (The People’s Alliance); - On 28 June 2008, Mohammed Saiful Bukhari Azlan, a former male aide in Mr. -

Publisher of scholarly books on economics, politics and social issues Advance Title Information World Rights PARTI ISLAM SEMALAYSIA (PAS): UNIFIER OF THE UMMAH? by Wan Saiful Wan Jan Pub. date: 4 Dec 2020 About the AUTHOR •Wan Saiful Wan Jan is Visiting Senior Fellow at the ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute, Singapore. About the BOOK The Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS) is no stranger to coalition politics. It has a long history of working with others, both in government and in opposition. Up until 2018, it used the framework of tahaluf siyasi as the guide to forming coalitions. Under the pretext of tahaluf siyasi or political coalition, PAS joined the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in 1974. It was also a key player in the Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah (APU), Barisan Alternatif (BA) and Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition coalitions. But in the lead up to GE14, PAS decided to form the Gagasan Sejahtera coalition with much smaller parties—Berjasa and Ikatan. It dominated this coalition and the two partners were largely insignificant. After GE14, PAS decided to partner with UMNO in Muafakat Nasional, under the pretext of a new strategy called ta’awun siyasi or political cooperation. This is a looser partnership arrangement, in which the partners are not strictly bound to each other. The formation of Muafakat Nasional is a historic development, as it brings together the two biggest and oldest Malay political parties for the time in an exclusive manner. Bersatu joined the pact in 2020, making Muafakat Nasional the biggest Malay political force in Malaysia today. PAS sees its role as a unifier of the Muslim ummah, holding and keeping the peace between UMNO and Bersatu. -
Rafizi Wants PKR Reps Besides Azizah to Decline Malaysiakini.Com Aug 29, 2014
Rafizi wants PKR reps besides Azizah to decline MalaysiaKini.com Aug 29, 2014 PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli today congratulated newly-elected PKR youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad for declining PAS Youth's suggestion to nominate him for the Selangor menteri besar post. Rafizi also lauded Nik Nazmi's (left) statement calling on all PKR Selangr assemblyperson from the party to do likewise through open statements. This would be in line with the party's "unanimous decision" on Wan Azizah, Rafizi said. "As such, I call upon all assemblypersons from PKR to make an open statement to reject any nomination for the post of menteri besar by any party as a means to respect the PKR leadership decision," he said. The call follows the Selangor palace's request for Pakatan parties to submit more than two names for the post, and PAS' insistence that it would put up at least two from PKR for the post. While Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim has finally tendered his resignation after failing to get the support of the majority of the state assemblypersons, the crisis is far from over. This is due to PAS' shifting stand on Khalid's replacement, despite a consensus agreement being beached at a Pakatan leadership meeting on Aug 17. While the outcome of the meeting was that Wan Azizah will be the sole candidate from Pakatan to be proposed to the palace, the sultan's request for multiple names has put PAS at odds with its coalition partners. Nik Nazmi: Thanks but no thanks Earlier today Nik Nazmi said he was grateful that PAS wants to nominate him soon as possible as Selangor menteri besar but he remains committed to supporting Wan Azizah's nomination. -
