JACA (Huesca, Spain) AIMS OF THIS EXCURSION In a week's time, we .... ill see a varied and very attractive landscape through the Spanish Pyrenees, where strong ecological contrasts are con­ ditioned by the topography with its high mountains (from 2600m in the Sie­ (from Pignatti 1962) Satureja montana L. rra del Cad!, to 3404m in the Aneto) cut across by deep valleys (Segre.~~ Pallaresa, Garona, N.Ribagorzana. Esers, Cinea, Are and Gallego rivers), and by the differences in soil and mother rock. Leaving the mar!time med! terranean climate of Barcelona, wi th its wineyards, olive trees, Alep pine and ~ parviflorus, and sight­ seeing the mediterranean mequts , we will soon arrive to the "PIa de Beges" dominated by the Pinue nhlra and Quercus pubescens submedite­ rranean forests. Far to the North, after Berge and on the other side or" the Cedf, 'We suddenly arrive to the more continental valley of our excursion, "La cerdenya", with its irrigated meadows. The dryness of these internal valleys determine the dominance of an evergreen oak 8S Ouercus rotundifolia and pine forests (P.nigra and P. sYlvestris). Ascending in altitude, near the "Puer-to de la Bonaigua", the excellent !'ir forests - indicate the best sol1s like the "Mats de Vallmcia" and Aran Valley, a county more open to the oceanic influences and quite different from the Sort area. Coming back to the south pyrenean slopes. through the "TUnel de Viella". much of the former forest cover has been destroyed, mainly burned by the" shepherds, and replaced by pyrophyte scrubs. Nevertheless. in spite of these grassland and pasture landscapes, some patches of oaks, beech an other trees are adorning this portion of the Central Pyrenees. Afterwards we will go to the West, passing through the "region of the canyons" (Congosto del Ventamillo, Desfiladero de las Devotes, Fez de JiSnovas) and making a short visit to the National Park of Ordesa-Monte Perdido at Pdneba valley. In this Middle Age County, Sobrarbe, forest remining well conserved on the s teep slopes, together with small and nice meadows. MarIs and limestone soils predominate at every level and are rull of endemics. By the Ara bassin, between the CancHis and La Solane, we will E R09l116I'inU9 0 cinelie L. see, at the Ribera de Fiscal the Berberis communities, as a result U of strong and dry wind. Just before Broto, in the Llanos de Planduviar, the very big gravels show us the importance of snow m,lting in late spring. ] Lines de Broto offer a very harmonious Jendecepe-c-meedowe , oak woods-- in contrast with prickly Echinospartum scrub of Cotefablo, as a consequence of centuries of burning end grazing. Coming down ver-ece Biescas, we will see a sample of different types of forest, now attacked by the ravin erosion of eocenic flysCh. After tlE very nice oak forest on sunny slopes, we traverse the Santa Elene Pass and will arrive to the Velle de Tena, in the High Bassin of the Gallego river, where mountains are yet under a oceanic climate. In the Balneario de pentaccea, as well as in Benasque valley, we will study the subalpine on granite rocks and may be some chionophi­ lous cornm~~itieB, near the alpine zone. The last day, sfter the scientific visit to the Instituto Plrensico de Ecologia, at Jscs, and the farewell luncheon, the bus come back directly to Barcelona. The high part of this mountain was unfortunately burned last year and a evergreen oak forest with Viburnum tinuB was destroyed. Near Berga we find the first pyrenean counterforts as the limestone cliffs of Oueralt and the vegetation changes so that between oaks and and Scotch pine there are also some beech trees. First Stop.- SOUTHERN MOUTH OF CAD 1 TUNNEL, or. Greixa (BARCELONA) Altitude: 1175 m. U.T.M.: DG 06 83 Half an hour ~e intend mainly to have a schematic vision of the vegetation of these southern slopes of the Pyrenees. Following the exposition, we will, observe guercus petraae· and ~ sempervirens mixed wi th Pious svt.veserts , this pine dominating until 1600 m-lBOO m, and over this level Pinus uncinata. Shadow and wetter places are indicated by Corylus avellana and also Fagus sylvatica where fog is persistent. In general, soils are calcareous, but there are also sandstones f and bleached solls, well indiCated by some calcifoge species. Shrubs are represented by: Coronilla emerus Amelanchier ovalis Viburnum lantana Acer opalu8 Lonicera xylosteum llex l~pifolium t.ve trueca Crataegus monogyna Here we have the main herbs: Arabia turrita Pimpinella saxifraga Digitalis lutea Pyrethrum corymbosum Melica uniflora Primula ver-re c Lilium martagon Knautia arvensis Potentilla micrantha Stellaria holostea Trifolium medium Galium maritlmum Acide. soil species like: Calluns vulgaris, Deschampsia flexuosa, cl ~. Summer is warm but the storms are frequent. Landscape do not presents trees, excepting the surrounding of meadows and some apple and pear trees. South slopes are very dry and conserve some steppic plants. Some years is too late to collect good specimens, but it is always interesting; we will profite the ancient road between Bellver and Martinet for the next stop of the day. Second stop.- DRY AND SUNNY SLOPES, 2 km. before MARTINET (LERIDA) near the river Segre. Altitude: 1000 m. Estil arquitectònic : Sense característiques específiques. El mestre d’obres va ser Miquel Sancu1. Descripció : Consta d'una nau rectangular amb dues capelles laterals i un gruixut campanar de torre de planta quadrada que s’alça a la banda esquerra. La façana és senzilla, sense cap ornamentació, amb portal rectangular i un òcul a la part alta. Està orientada a llevant. Conserva, a l'actual frontal de l'altar, una escena de la Conversió de Sant Pau del segle XVII. La coberta és a dues aigües amb teula àrab.     European Red List of Habitats - Grasslands Habitat Group E1.5b Iberian oromediterranean basiphilous dry grassland Summary This habitat comprises grasslands of base-rich soils over calcareous bedrocks on the slopes and crests of high mountains in the Iberian Peninsula and France. There, the growing season is short, with harsh winters when strong winds blow the ground free of snow and leave the surface subject to deep cold which encourages the development of freeze-thaw features. The cover of vegetation is intermediate to complete, dominated by prostrate or dwarf grasses and forbs, and includes many endemics. Extreme conditions generally prevent succession, and grazing, generally by sheep, is restricted to the brief summer and has little impact except where the habitat extends to somewhat lower levels. There seems to have been no loss of extent but there has been some decline in quality due to leisure infrastructure. The maintenance of low intensity sheep grazing is essential for the conservation of the habitat in the lower elevations, while in the highest elevations limitation of leisure activities is very important, as the habitat is very difficult to recover once it has been destroyed. Synthesis The habitat is assigned to the category Least Concern (LC), as it has not substantially decreased in quantity nor in quality over the last 50 years, and its distribution (AOO) and range (EOO) are quite large. Nevertheless, we have to take into account that inside this EOO, the habitat only occurs in wind-exposed slopes of the calcareous mountains and plateaus, with a current estimated total area of only 725 km2.

    Empresa: Extinguida Funicular Aéreo de Montserrat a San Jerónimo SA (Servicio complementario de autobuses) Ubicación: Montserrat (Barcelona) De Cataluña Versión 03-2019 Textos Legales Bibliografía Billetes H I S T O R I A L El 23-05-1922 se crea la Sociedad: "Funicular Aéreo de Montserrat a San Jerónimo" y a Funicular Aéreo de principios de 1923 se inician las obras. Montserrat a San Jerónimo El 29-07-1929 se pone en servicio el Funicular (7 años habían durado las obras). Era el más inclinado de Europa. (Existe abundante información en Internet, aquí se intentá hacer únicamente un breve resumen y citar curiosidades). El 07-10-1929 Ramon Soler Vilabert tramita autorización para la línea (de autobuses) Sta Cecillia Montserrat- Ramón Montserrat coincidente (Tipo B) con el ferrocarril y utilizando 3 coches. Soler Este mismo empresario también realizará la línea Manresa-Berga. (ver lineas). Ninguna de estas parecen tener vinculación Vilabert con la que vemos en esta ficha, pero la primera tuvo una relación indirecta, ver apuntes siguientes. (Ver ficha). La Empresa que explotaba el Funicular Aereo de San Gerónimo tenía vehículos para enlazar con Montserrat (Monasterio) ya desde sus inicios (ver documento) aunque la constancia más antigua de que se dispone (que es ésta) data de 1932. En 1952 el Funicular de San Geronimo SA está realizando el servicio (de autobuses) Montserrat (Monasterio)-Santa Cecilia- Aereo de San Gerónimo. (Ver líneas). Aunque se cite el nombre con el SA detrás seguramente debe tratarse de una abreviación del auténtico. En 1952 también Miguel Serra Termes está realizando la línea (de autobuses) Cremallera del Monasterio de Miguel Montserrat-Restaurante Santa Cecília con una tarifa muy reducida y solo para usuarios del restaurante, entre Serra los meses de mayo y octubre.

    Montserrat Rack Railway the Dream of The

    Montserrat Rack Railway The Tren de Montserrat, as the rack railway between Monistrol and Montserrat was known, has been in existence since the 19th century. It was originally built to meet the need for improved access for worshippers and pilgrims to the Montserrat sanctuary. The traditional way up Montserrat mountain had been on foot or horseback along the Collbató or Santa Cecilia paths, from 1698 onwards turned into a road. It was not until the second half of the 19th century that an alternative and much quicker access way was inaugurated. This was the wide gauge line operated by Ferrocarrils del Nord to Monistrol-Montserrat station. From there, the company built a road (1858-59) that reached the monastery by dint of a sti 14-kilometre climb following the line of the old bridle path. This made it possible for a stagecoach service to do the journey in three and a half hours, stopping to give respite to horses and travelers alike at the Font dels Monjos. The lack of a permanent means of transport and an increase in the number of visitors led Joaquim Carrera, engineer and admirer of both Montserrat and Swiss mountain trains, to persuade local businessman Josep M. González to build a rack railway that would link Monistrol station with the monastery. In 1881 the company Ferrocarriles de Montaña a Grandes Pendientes was constituted for the purpose. The rack railway was inaugurated on 6 October 1892, and it soon became the most popular railway in Catalonia, taking its place among the country's most prized traditions.

Historical and geographic analyses emphasize the marginality of the western Pyrenees and the role of enforced social norms exacted by intense solidarities of kin and neighbors in agropastoral production. Both are satisfying and simple narratives, yet neither offers a realistic framework for understanding complex processes or the contingency and behavioral variability of human agents in transforming a landscape. The Long Anthropocene in the western Pyrenees was a spatially and temporally heterogeneous and asynchronous process, and the evidence frequently departs from conventional narratives about human landscape degradation in this agropastoral situation. A complementary place-based strategy that draws on geoarchaeological, biophysical, and socio-ecological factors is used to examine human causality and environmental resilience and demonstrate their relationship with the sustainability of mountain landscapes of the western Pyrenees over medium to long time intervals.

Areas with scarce resources or adverse environmental conditions can efficiently take advantage of extensive systems with local breeds. These local breeds are adapted to the environment and can give optimal productive yields. The aim of this work is to explain the project of the Bruna d’Andorra, a local breed under an extensive cow–calf system in Andorra, as an example of local farming and marketing of its meat products. Andorra is a sovereign landlocked microstate in the eastern Pyrenees (Europe) that consists predominantly of rugged mountains and harsh weather conditions for livestock farming. This work describes the evolution of the Bruna d’Andorra population during the period of 2000–2020 focusing on the main meat productive and reproductive performance achievements. Finally, the plans for the future of the project are focused on optimizing a highly sustainable and environmentally friendly farming system.
