GreatGrea Houghtont Houghton www.greathoughton.org.uk Parish News Issue No.125 April 2020 2 3 Chairman's Report. Due to the ever-changing situation brought about by the Corona virus, this report is based on the latest information available at the time of writing. The Parish Council elections were due to take place in May; they have now been cancelled and have been scheduled for May 2021, making our current Council a 6-year term instead of the normal 4 years. However, we do have a vacancy on the Parish Council, if you think your input could make a difference and benefit the village please contact the Clerk. The Community Speed watch, our volunteers were due to have their training in March, but this has been cancelled for the time being. Hopefully they will be able to operate in the next few weeks. As a precursor to the Speed watch and to measure the success of the programme, the Police have a camera that monitors traffic through the village; in the first week there were over 11,400 vehicles recorded; 1624 exceeding the speed limit, of which, 496 were travelling at or over 35MPH. Another Police initiative is to place an ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) camera in the High Street to monitor criminals using the village as an escape route. Once again, the Parish Council has received complaints of inconsiderate parking, please look to make sure you are not preventing others from going to or from their driveways. Finally, please remember, there are people in the village willing to help you if you need to self -isolate. Your first point of contact is either your Parish Councillor or Neighbourhood watch; their contact details are in this Parish News. Thomas Bowler, Chairman, Great Houghton Parish Council. News March 2020 Unfortunately in February we were let down by our speaker from the Red Cross so our President, Chris, very kindly stepped in to give a talk about policewomen in Northamptonshire and in particular her own career within the police force. Some interesting facts were learnt….thank you Chris. Alan Marchant spoke to us in March about “Women at Bletchley Park” and what a fascinating and informative talk it was, so many “superbrains” working there decoding messages which helped to shorten the war. Also so many secrets kept even within families and between husbands and wives. It is certainly an amazing place and worthy of several visits. Knitted green hearts were displayed around the village in February to raise awareness of the need for action on Climate Change, hopefully they encouraged you to think about what you are doing to solve some of the problems we are faced with. In this time of restrictions and uncertainty due to the Corona virus, our April and possibly May meetings, coffee and craft mornings have all been cancelled. I hope WI members will be vigilant, support each other and offer a hand of friendship and help to villagers who may need it. Above all stay safe and well. Elaine Fleckney To all the villagers who cannot get down to see us. We are still offering a takeaway service from our main menu with free delivery You can locate our menu on our website Give us a call & speak to Traci 9 10 Luxurious beauty and skincare clinic opens in Little Houghton Holly Chandler Beauty & Wellness is a discreet beauty and skincare clinic set in a converted stable on luscious country grounds, providing ‘luxury brands and exceptional service combined’. Curates Corner Hello Friends, It has been a long winter, but not a cold one, rain has dominated the weather as we've watched region after region of the UK become submerged under water however, pictures of flooded homes have now departed our TV screens to be replaced by face masks. Many are living in fear and panic of the Coronavirus and worst of all the lowest of the low are emptying supermarket shelves of anything they can get their hands on. Despite our interminable grumblings, we live in one of the most affluent countries in the world, there is more than enough to go around if we stop thinking of ourselves and share! Unfortunately doing the right thing is easier for some of us than others and for some people, thinking of others is just too much to ask. As we have journeyed through Lent, the message of the Gospels has been of self-reflection, repentance and renewal. Renewal of our spiritual selves comes through improving our relationship with God; some of us have been doing this by prayer and bible study in the form of the Lent course, which has been following the final week of Jesus' and those he encountered on his way to the cross. Our lectionary and bible readings show us that our relationship with God is inextricably linked to our relationship with other people and vice versa, we cannot possibly say that we love God and yet refuse to show consideration to others, it doesn't equate. “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you that is the law and the prophets”. These words are the summary of the Old Testament and of everything that God tells us. This Golden Rule is not only found in the teaching of Jesus, but also, in some way, in all religions; it should be the most profound universal statement of humanity, sadly it's not! I believe that good will overcome evil and I believe it because of the sacrifice of one man – Jesus Christ, who did not snatch and grab but gave his all so that we might live in eternal glory. So as we continue to work through Lent and reflect on our lives, let us also pray for those whose actions and deeds let humankind down. Pray that they may come to see the light of Christ and turn their thoughts away from self and towards others. In light of the indefinite suspension of public services, I hope you will be able to celebrate the feast of the Risen Christ at Easter by joining us on Facebook or the Benefice website, and remember, God works through all of us. He is in the people you help and the people who help you, and now is the time to help each other. To everyone in the Benefice, be assured of our love and prayers always. With all God's Blessings for a Happy Easter.
