We have been receiving fewer reports from the sports clubs in and around Bugbrooke and I find it surprising that clubs and teams do not want to use the village magazine to advertise and promote their activities. If you are keen to shout about your successes or to ask for assistance in progressing some aspect of your preferred sport, I suggest you consider preparing articles and photos for future copies of LINK. We regularly include articles supplied by the police but in addition we now have a crime report and statistics for Bugbrooke and other villages and areas in this part of Northamptonshire. The statistics themselves are of interest, and of great concern to those who were the victims of crime, and I invite you to consider what we can all do in an attempt to reduce the number of events in the village. I am delighted to read that the cubs, scouts and guides have been very active and I particularly like the way in which photos are used to illustrate their articles. When you are preparing your next submission, it is well worth considering what image could accompany the text and would then form part of the archive of magazines that hopefully will be available for others to look at for many years to come. I read that Sue and Tony Pace are once again asking for financial support in their direct and personal efforts to make a difference to a school and village in Tanzania. I urge you to consider their request and to consider making a contribution depending on your own circumstances. It’s an interesting thought that the time may come when we are looking to others in the world to provide assistance to us. She took up the post on September 1st replacing the retiring Clerk. At the close of the August meeting an informal get together with both present and past councillors was held yto sa goodbye to Emma Bignell after 15 years of service to the council. She has achieved many things during this time, most notably gaining ‘Quality’ status for the council, the first parish council in Northamptonshire. She has brought the council and its procedures up to date and enabled us to operate in a professional manner and will be greatly missed. To contact Mrs Parry, please telephone the Parish Office on 01604 832838. The Parish Plan is nearing completion and should soon be ready for distribution. The plan contains detailed analysis of the village from information gained via the village surveys. It lists actions that need to take place, gives an indication of timescales and who will be responsible for implementation. I recently attended a Community Panel Meeting at Towcester Police Station for Beat 41, which is Bugbrooke and a few of the surrounding villages. We were presented with a list of concerns that parishioners have indicated and asked to prioritise the top three. We agreed that speeding, inconsiderate parking and lack of Police patrols were most important. For the next three months the police have committed to address these issues as a priority when able. To have your own input for the following three months, I would encourage you to look on the LINK website and there you will be able to access the ‘Community Interaction’ form and list your concerns which will be fed back to the police for the next meeting. We also have a new Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) in Jenny Harrison who has joined us from Deanshanger. Crime in Bugbrooke Crime in Bugbrooke took a three per cent drop in the last year compared with 2006, according to the latest figures from Northamptonshire police. Officers patrolling the local beat, which includes Bugbrooke and surrounding villages, recorded 88 crimes in 2007 rather than 91 the year before. Davina Logan, Deputy Chief Constable for the force, said there had been a county‐ wide fall in reported crimes for the fourth year in a row. A breakdown of the figures showed a rise in vehicle crime, including one February night, which saw 11 vehicles damaged or broken into, but Inspector Alex Terry, of the Towcester Rural Safer Community Team, said this was a one‐off. He said: “This was part of a series of offences across the area when we had some criminals targeting vans and stealing tools within them. This was unusual for Bugbrooke and has not been repeated. As you can appreciate when this sort of thing occurs we do take extra measures to try and catch the offenders or deter, which happened in this case.”

Inspector Terry said: “Overall Bugbrooke is not a violent place and I do not want the residents of Bugbrooke to feel they live in a violent area and be fearful of leaving their homes.”

Reginald Mole-husband Lives! I’ve just returned from a week under canvas in mid‐Wales where I undertook the role of ‘The Rev’ to a group of Boys and Girls Brigade plus officers from North Staffordshire. It was great fun but the uninterrupted twelve hours sleep I enjoyed the day after my return goes some way to explaining how exhausting it was also! As I had a few afternoons free I went to savour the delights of places like Barmouth, Harlech, Portmadog and Portmeirion, sometimes with my newly acquired Sat‐Nav choosing some rather interesting routes for me to follow! Many of these roads were narrow and even in a mid‐sized people carrier like mine, the roads demanded my full attention and respect. This said, on a number of occasions I was either following a lorry or confronted by one head on! I have only the highest admiration for the skills of these lorry drivers as they manoeuvre and reverse their vehicles precisely often into confined spaces! I think if it was me driving a lorry in order to be sure Iʹm not going to scratch either the lorry or any parked car, or demolish a fence post, I would have to stop, apply the handbrake, and get out of the lorry to look. This set me thinking about the way we drive that biggest of all vehicles – life itself. How often do we stop and examine just where we are and where exactly we are heading? How close are we to the edge of that cliff? Or is there a brick wall that will cause us terminal damage when we hit it? The Bible has many ways of explaining to us Godʹs will for our lives. It wonʹt tell us where we should live, what jobs we should do, or to which school we should send our children. What it will give us are the standards and principles that should determine the conduct of our lives as children of the Living God. The only certain way to keep life on the right track is to use these as a basis for all major decisions but, all too often, this wisdom is overlooked. It is a good idea from time to time to stop, take stock and review the journey towards our goals. By comparing our path to that defined in the Makerʹs instructions, we can make necessary corrections.

Friends of St Michael and All Angels Church The annual Fish & Chip supper and Quiz took place in a packed Community Centre on 4 July. The winners this year were Phil Bignell and his team and they have already indicated that they will follow established tradition and set the quiz for next year. Overall this year’s quiz raised just over £800 to be added to the Church Friends funds. We have also paid just over £1000 for repairs to the Church roof; hopefully this will keep out the rain in this terrible summer. Our next fund raising event will be the Wine Tasting on Friday, 5 December. Street Names Until roads were officially named in the 1960’s, Great Lane and Ace Lane were always known locally as Big Lane and Little Lane. Perhaps they should have been called Post Office Lane (where the first Post Office was located) and Haste Lane (short cut to the church for latecomers). This is not the first instance of the Parish Council getting street names wrong. Peace Hill should have been Piece Hill (the parson’s piece of land that was traditionally donated to him by the parish). John Curtis

Nature Notes After one of the wettest Augusts on record we are all hoping for an Indian Summer in September and October. Those able to escape to the sunshine take full advantage of their ability, and it was noticeable that swallows and swifts had largely left by the end of August whereas in a good summer they will delay their departure until well into September. Stan Clark phoned from Harpole in mid‐August to say he had just seen about 40 swallows sitting on telegraph wires. They were probably collecting together before leaving and Wilf Curtis reported that the swifts had left his roof in the High Street by about the same time. It will seem a long autumn unless nature is kind enough to provide an extended spell of good weather at the end of summer. It will soon be time to think about keeping birds alive in colder months by providing food in

13 the garden. There is a large range of species to cater for and they will all benefit from a good range of food being put out. Fortunately Alan at the PetStop always has a wide selection of bird foods to suit all beak sizes. It is an advantage to the birds to site feeders and tables near to bushes and trees so they can seek cover if predators like sparrow hawks appear. John Curtis

Bugbrooke Guides Hello our names are Ellie and Evie and we come from 1st Bugbrooke Guides. We are going to tell you about an International Camp that we went to this summer called Bounce in the grounds of Boughton House near Kettering. On Saturday 2nd August, with the help of our parents, we pitched camp and got settled in with our new friends from Newnham Guides . The next day we got up and made our bedding rolls before breakfast. We then went to the Bounce’s very own Olympic Games where our sub‐camp came 4th out of four teams! That night we discovered a tepee tent and made a lot of crazy friends from Carlisle. We met up with them every night when we had our free time. On Monday we finally had a shower, even though they were freezing cold we still enjoyed them! Later on that day we did “Go Glam” it was great, and we could do a lot of things like make up, face masks, nails, hair braids and yoga. Then we did “Go” which was African dancing and a trip round the World. Later that evening we did a quiz and didn’t do very well! Tuesday was the best day because we went to Wickstead Park. We went on the drop tower 15 times in a row, then it broke! We also went on most of the rides in the park. Wednesday we did the fete and went to all the different countries in our sub‐camp to do different activities. Thursday we did “Go Green” and “Go Do It”. The next day we did “Go Make It” and “Go Splash” where we did bellboating. Friday was very emotional because we were all going home and were going to miss our new friends from Carlisle, so at the disco lwe al cried. Saturday we all striked camp and had our own little closing ceremony. We all got post cards saying how we would be remembered from this camp. We also got a packet of hair bobbles and clips and a pot of nail varnish. We gave hugs to everyone and told them we would be visiting Newnham to keep in touch with our new friends. Hi, my name is Talitha and I am from 1st Bugbrooke Guides. In the summer holidays myself and 4 other guides went to Switzerland with Flore Brownies for 10 days. It was a lifetime experience, if I could go again I would. We travelled to Switzerland by coach which took us 22 hours. We did a range of activities throughout the trip. We walked up some steep

It went really quickly. The one thing I will not miss are the cow bells, you could hear them all night. The things I’ve listed are only a few of the things we did. If I included everything you would need a book with a million pages.

Mothers’ Union On July 10th, members were invited to an afternoon tea in Lindsay’s garden. 16 members attended and enjoyed a sunlit afternoon with a delicious tea. Joyce devised several quizzes – a great social meeting. On July 17th, 14 members enjoyed an evening meal in The Sun, Nether Heyford. This became a tmos entertaining evening. No meetings in August. On September 4th at 2.30pm in the Sunday School, the Revd. Stephen French will take the service to start our autumn/winter meetings. New members are always welcome. Our advent carol service will be on Thursday, December 4th at 7.30pm in the Sunday School, taken by Revd. Stephen French. A social evening will follow with mince pies and tea. Women’s Institute Having enjoyed a summer break, we commence our autumn/winter programme by welcoming members back with a supper followed by our AGM. The village diary provides details of our monthly meetings to the end of November. We look forward to greeting visitors to any of these meetings. County Federation events in which we will be involved include the annual council meeting at Northampton High School for Girls, Hardingstone, in October when hundreds of members from all around the county gather to receive the Federation’s annual report. The guest speaker this year will be Christine Hamilton, who no doubt will regale us with anecdotes of how she and husband Neil (ex‐MP) came through their difficulties and what it is like to appear in programmes like ‘I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here’. To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Northamptonshire Federation, a concert will be held on December 5th at St Matthew’s Church in Northampton with performances by Daventry Brass, W. I. County Choir and others. It looks to be a wonderful night of celebration.

Bugbrooke Scout Group Beavers took advantage of the warm weather in July and played outdoor games on the field. They made pirate hats in preparation for a pirate fancy dress party to round off the summer term. Cubs working for their Pet Lover’s badge had a special evening to bring their pets to the, Hut and give a short talk about them. Dogs, cats and chickens came in at different times and behaved themselves. Cubs have continued to work hard, planting the conservation area in the churchyard for their Global Challenge badge. They enjoyed a family barbecue for their end of year meeting. Several scouts take part in active sports like rugby, football and basketball, and they prepared individual presentations to qualify for their Physical Recreation badge. Jamie brought in his basketball trophies. Scouts gained their Entertainers’ badge, as they had all rehearsed for, and acted in the school play, ‘Olivia’; a splendid performance. Upper Nene Villages 3rd Age Group – Bugbrooke U3A Monday 20th October, Captain Bill Bellamy ‘21 Days in June’ Captain Bellamy served in the 8th Kings Royal Irish Hussars and took part in the Invasion of German occupied Europe in 1944, landing on 9th June. His talk will encompass his experiences of the invasion and his life in the army. Captain Bellamyʹs talk, accompanied by a slide presentation, will be both interesting and illuminating, giving a true insight into what was a momentous part of World War II and which, I am sure, will appeal to everyone.

Mr Joseph Hakes

This painting by Stan Clark is of Joseph Hakes emptying the toilet buckets on his round in Bugbrooke. He had a small barrel of creosote that he soaked squares of sacking in, and he used these to help carry the buckets to the cart. He also had a yoke for the times that he had to carry the buckets a great distance, such as all the way from the bottom of Gilkes Yard. He worked for Harry Gilkes who had a contract to empty the buckets and when the cart was full it was spread over those fields within the village farmed by Mr Gilkes. One of these fields was the first on the right past the railway bridge down Ham Lane, on the way towards Corn Hill. Another field was up Camp Hill opposite the eight council houses on the Gayton Road, where we once lived. He usually did this job at night‐time and so was nick‐named (amongst other names) the midnight cart. The smell was unbelievable! During the Second World War years, because of a dispute, Mr Hakes stopped doing

26 this job in the dark hours of the evening, and John Gilkes and his brother Harry started doing this job for a short period. There was no street lighting so it was quite a problem to see what they were doing or where they were walking. Many a time the men doing the job would trip and fall over the edges of the paths and leave quite a smelly old mess, and sometimes they themselves would fall in amongst it! I remember coming from school during lunch times and walking up Camp Hill back home for dinner, as we called it in those days. We had to pass Mr Hakes with his horse and cart and the smell would be somewhat strong. It was not so bad in the winter months, but in the summer with all the flies, it was something else! It used to attract the birds like swallows, swifts, dan house martins wherever the cart went, as well as to the fields where it was emptied. One winter when we had a slide on the ice that went from the top of Camp Hill to the bottom, Mr Hakes came up the hill with the horse and cart and walked onto the slide that was covered in snow. The air was not only blue with the smell, but with language as well. During these very cold winter spells, the contents of most of the buckets were frozen solid as most of these closets were out in the cold well away from the houses. When it was deposited on the open fields the cart left lots of bucket shaped ice sculptures on the ground. Another thing that would happen when all this effluent was tipped out across the fields was that the different coloured pieces of newspaper would dry out and would go wherever the wind had the mind to blow it. The Chronicle and Echo paper was normally greyish white, but they produced two other papers. One was pink in colour, and the other was a green sports paper. I spent hours as a child cutting papers up and threading the squares onto a piece of string for use in the toilet! Stanley Joseph Clark

Bugbrooke Cricket Club

This year is the 60th Anniversary of our Club playing at the Camp Hill Farm Ground, the first matches being played here in 1948. Before that we used to play in a field belonging to the Adams family off the Heyford Road by the brook where the first job was always to clear the cattle muck from the outfield before the game could begin! Our League season has just finished with the final day being disrupted by more wet weather in what has been a very damp “summer”. Our 1st X1 finished mid table

Bugbrooke St Michael’s Football Club The new season has opened with considerable optimism. The senior sides have begun with good early results and it is hoped that all four senior sides will be in contention for league or cup honours at later stages in the season. The youth teams begin their programme of fixtures in September and will be looking forward to pitting their skills against other young players. The chief objective of the year off the pitch is the upgrading of floodlights that have been up for over 20 years. Planning permission has been granted for the erection of a further 2 stanchions on the halfway line. Due to the greater efficiency of lighting nowadays there will be a reduction in lamps from 20 to 16. As there are more stanchions the light can be directed downwards more accurately and this should result in less light spillage. The club will be fundraising to achieve this objective and would appreciate the support of the local community bearing in mind that the club runs 18 teams from 7 years of age to adults. The first function is a firework display on November 7th. Tickets can be obtained from the clubhouse before the event. There will also be a Barn Dance at Campion School in November and a Christmas Raffle will be organised when all players will be expected to sell tickets to raise floodlight funds. The cost of the project is expected to be about £20,000 but the club is hoping to get a grant of 50% from the Football Foundation Fund. If things go according to plan it is

Hollie’s Blog Hollie Avil took part in the Beijing Olympics, and has given us permission to reproduce extracts from her web Blog, to share her experiences with you. We continue this from the previous issue with the run up to the Olympics. July 16th Hola! Weʹve been in Spain for nine days now. The conditions and training provisions have been perfect, temperatures up to 42 degrees, lots of hills to ride and great off road running! Training has been going well across all three disciplines. July 28th British National Champion! I didnʹt taper down for the National Champs, my coach and I discussed how I would use the race as a hard training session, to end my block of training before heading to Korea. So I went into the race feeling pretty much pressure free. I just wanted to get out there and push my body to the limits, giving it my best shot and what ever result I would get from doing that I would be happy with! Running into the finish line, I was over the moon! I got a great race out and a great result with it! Korea awaits. August 3rd Some like it hot! We arrived in Korea on Tuesday evening, after departing Heathrow on Monday afternoon. For the first few days we kept training fairly light and easy in order to get over the jet lag and to acclimatize. Itʹs been very hot and very humid since weʹve been here which is perfect! Itʹs these conditions that we need to be training and living in to acclimatize for what weʹre likely to face in Beijing. Youʹve just got to be prepared to sweat a lot! But sweating is actually a good sign, the quicker you start to sweat rthe quicke your body is trying to cool itself down, which means your body is adapting to the conditions and learning how to react quickly. So bring on the sweat! August 9th Let the Games begin! Last night we celebrated the start of the Olympics with an Opening Ceremony BBQ! Our team Chef, Olly, spent the day preparing homemade burgers, rustling up some delicious salads and assembling scrummy vegetable kebabs! All the food was super – the perfect way to end a hard days training! We were lucky enough to watch the opening ceremony on a large projector screen outside too. It really was spectacular and it definitely got me even more excited! Training has been going well and Iʹve been enjoying the training here too! The riding is great – quiet roads, super surfaces and as Iʹve mentioned previously, lots of hills! The 50m

pool is perfect and the running has been ideal too – Iʹve been doing a mix of treadmill, off road and road running. Weʹve been lucky with the weather. Most days have been hot and humid with the odd day of rain! Itʹs good to train in all conditions though I think, we canʹt be sure that rain wonʹt come on race day! Not long now! August 23rd The Games Last Saturday, Sunday and Monday were a pretty tough few days! Training was going super and I arrived in Beijing really raring to go and race on Monday. It was my worst nightmare when I fell ill on Saturday evening, continuously vomiting. The Team GB Doctor was fabulous and did everything he could to try and help me recover as quickly as possible, it was pretty hard to identify where my illness came from though and left us with a real guessing game. I did my best to stay positive and was determined to get on that start line on Monday morning and give the race my best shot! I said to Mum – ʹI donʹt care if someone has to push off the pontoon swim start – Iʹm starting that race!ʹ. Having my family out here really helped. They stuck by me like extra strong super glue, stayed positive and did everything they could to help me recover. Iʹm feeling a lot better now though, physically and mentally. I canʹt describe the feeling you get when you are forced to stop a race. I really didnʹt have much choice though as I was sick three times out on the bike, unable to keep any fluid down. Thank you to everyone who has sent kind messages of support, theyʹve all really helped. For the past few days Iʹve been doing my best to enjoy the Olympic experience. Helen and I have been to watch some other sports, being amazed by the spectacular venues! The athletics has been amazing and weʹve had such great seats every time – itʹs fantastic being so close to the action! Today we went and watched the diving which was pretty amazing too. Weʹve also taken a few trips in and around Beijing, visiting the famous Silk Markets and well known Beijing streets. Yesterday we went to a street famous for itʹs exotic food on sticks. Exotic food being sea horses and scorpions dipped in batter!!! I cannot put into words how fantastic this experience has been. It is nothing like any other. Tomorrow is the closing ceremony! Itʹs set to be a pretty big one and the passing on of the Games to London will make it extra special for us Team GB guys! Bugbrooke Bowls Club By the time you read this, the Bowls Club will just have completed another busy year. It started sadly with the unexpected death of our secretary, Gary Abbott; later on we also lost Maureen Wood who was an excellent committee member and hard worker for the club. They will both be sorely missed. It has been a very successful year. In our weekend friendly games we have won 16 of the 24 matches played by mid September. Despite the horrible summer we have only lost a few matches to the rain and the green has played very well. Many thanks are due to our groundsman, Brian Wade. Many of you will have followed our adventures in Tanzania over the last few years. Well, being real suckers, we want to do it again. Osiligi Secondary School, a new school on the plains north of Arusha in Tanzania is still our target. At the start of this year, with your support, we built an administration block, classrooms, a teachers house and a kitchen as well as getting a half‐decent water supply. That was just about enough to see them through their second year. This year, to support the growing school, we would like to build another classroom and include the desks to go with it; children can’t learn whilst sitting on upturned buckets. We also hope to build another teachers house and, if possible, get an electricity supply. That should be just about enough to keep them going for another year. Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. We all know that rising food and fuel prices make our lives difficult but it is much much harder for them and their need for help is even more desperate. So will you help them by contributing to a fund for the school? We promise that every penny you give will go to the school; we will meet all our own travel and living costs and make our own contribution as well. There are no overheads to reduce your contribution. I was wondering if anybody was interested in a car share scheme? With the rising cost of living, not least petrol, I was hoping to help people save money and make new friends at the same time. Suggestions for car shares are to work or shopping trips. Maybe one week one person drives their car, giving somebody a lift and the next week swap round. I would like to know if anyone would be interested– everyone takes it in turn to choose a book then everyone reads it and we meet up to chat about it. This would be an informal club, the only thing would be that you have to read the book and turn up regularly! The book club will be the third Thursday of every month at The Five Bells.
