YIVO Encyclopedia Published to Celebration and Acclaim alled “essential” and a “goldmine” in early reviews, The YIVO Encyclo- pedia of Jews in Eastern Europe was published this spring by Yale University Press. CScholars immediately hailed the two-volume, 2,400-page reference, the culmination of more than seven years of intensive editorial develop- ment and production, for its thoroughness, accuracy, and readability. YIVO began the celebrations surrounding the encyclopedia’s completion in March, just weeks after the advance copies arrived. On March 11, with Editor in Chief Gershon Hundert serving as moderator and respondent, a distinguished panel of “first readers”—scholars and writers who had not participated in the project—gave their initial reactions to the contents of the work. 25 Tremors in the Shatterzone of Empires EASTERN GALICIA IN SUMMER 1941 K S During the rst days and weeks aer the German attack on the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 a wave of violence against Jews swept those territories that had been occupied by the Soviet Union since September 1939 or summer 1940 and now were invaded by the German armed forces and its Romanian and Hungarian allies. e violence consisted mostly of mass execu- tions by the German Security Police’s infamous Einsatzgruppen and pogrom-like excesses by the local Christian population. Oen both forms of violence were closely connected. 1 e anti-Jewish violence in the region sprung from both external and internal sources. Both sources of violence characterized the region as a borderland in the sense of a contested space where competing claims of states, nations, religions, and ideologies clashed with one another. us, the violent events of summer 1941 epitomize greater conicts that arose from the relations of the powers in the region and from the fundamental political and socioeco- nomic changes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Local anti-Jewish violence was one expression of larger structural tensions that characterized the region. is chapter will focus on Eastern Galicia. März 2018 Die hier von Paul Kaegbein zusammengestellten und jetzt auch durchsuchbaren Verzeichnisse werden kontinuierlich ergänzt und aktualisiert. Sie enthalten zunächst Titel, die seit 2005 eine Reihe von Jahren der Arbeitsgemeinschaft historischer Forschungseinrichtungen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (AHF) in München bis zu ihrer Auflösung Ende 2013 für die von ihr damals herausgegebene „Historische Bibliographie“ gemeldet wurden. Im Abschnitt A sind die Titel chronologisch, im Abschnitt B zunächst alphabetisch nach Autoren und dann wiederum chronologisch geordnet. Tracing the cultural, social and political transformations of the European Jewries since the end of the 18 th century, the course enquires into the specific Jewish experiences in modern times and their changing relationships to non-gentile society. The geographical focus lies on Central and East Central Europe. Students are expected to participate actively in the sessions. The Eichmann Trial EUROPEAN JEWRY BEFORE AND AFTER HITLER by SALO W. BARON A HISTORIAN, not an eyewitness or a jurist, I shall concern myself with the historical situation of the Jewish people before, during, and after the Nazi onslaught—the greatest catastrophe in Jewish history, which has known many catastrophes. A historian dealing with more or less contemporary problems con- fronts two major difficulties. The first is that historical perspective usu- ally can be attained only after the passage of time. The second is that much relevant material is hidden away in archives and private collec- tions, which are usually not open for inspection until several decades have passed. In this instance, however, the difficulties have been re- duced. The world has been moving so fast since the end of World War JJ, and the situation of 1961 so little resembles that of the 1930's, that one may consider the events of a quarter of a century ago as belonging almost to a bygone historic era, which the scholarly investigator can view with a modicum of detachment. In fact, a new generation has been growing up which "knew not Hitler." For its part, the older generation is often eager to forget the nightmare of the Nazi era. Hence that period has receded in the consciousness of man as if it had occurred long ago. This article is based on a memorandum that Professor Baron prepared for himself when he was invited to testify at the Eichmann trial, in April 1961, on the Jewish communities destroyed by the Nazis.

Visions for Jewish-Arab Integration and Semitism in the Second Aliyah
ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: “SONS OF SHEM:” VISIONS FOR JEWISH-ARAB INTEGRATION AND SEMITISM IN THE SECOND ALIYAH (1904-1914) Maytal Mark, Master of Arts, 2021 Thesis directed by: Professor Shay Hazkani Department of History This thesis examines a cohort of Zionist intellectuals based in and around Ottoman Palestine who advocated for Jewish-Arab integration in the Second Aliyah period, or roughly 1904-1914. In studying individuals who came from diverse linguistic, ethnic, and political backgrounds side by side, this thesis argues that their shared language around Semitic identity and their advocacy around the same set of civic goals suggests a shared worldview and a common understanding of the goals of Zionism as a movement. The existence of such a cohort suggests a re-examination of the nature of the Zionist movement as well as a re-evaluation of Sephardi-Ashkenazi relations in this period.
