New exhibitions at St Clair Villa Museum & Archives - Goulburn Cordial Manufacturers

Working in early was a thirsty business and brewing and cordial manufacturing began quite early in the Colony's history. Soft drink making, as distinct from beer brewing, was established by 1830 and cordial manufacturing began in Sydney in1846. Successful cordial manufacturing relied on high water quality and the use of the best flavourings .From the late 1880s until the mid-1950s, Goulburn had several cordial manufacturers. The St Clair Villa museum houses many impor- tant business and commerce collections, relating to the history and development of Goulburn’s early industries, including cor- dial and soft drink manufacturing.

Goulburn was the principle centre of trade in New South Wales’s southern inland trade and commerce from the very early days. In the 1840s Tommy Jacobs and ‘Jack the Jew’ were known dispensers of soft drinks in Goulburn. In October 1855, the Goulburn Herald reported that Lewis Samuel and John Jones had taken premises next to the Goulburn Hotel for ‘the purpose of manufacturing lemonade and ginger beer during the warm weather. The beverages of Messrs Samuels and Jones are very refreshing and pleasant’. By the early 1880s there were 6 firms manufacturing ‘cordial and aerated water’ in Goulburn.

On display now is a comprehensive collection of cordial bottles, stone ginger beer bottles, soda siphons, and ephemera from early Goulburn cordial manufacturers such as C. Sheekey, who was in Auburn Street; W. Steele & Co, James Nowlan, estab- lished in 1860 in Clifford Street; Sotheran Bros, Charles McAlister and Hope’s Cordials, today still operating and known as Goulburn Soft Drinks. Included in the exhibition is a rare and original demijohn, from the Goulburn cordial manufacturer, C. Sheekey. For centuries commercial products such as cordials were put up in generic containers. It was more economical to sell goods in bulk and let merchants parcel them out to customers. Demijohns were storage vessels used for transporting liq- uids, wine and spirits.

An additional unusual item in the exhibition is a Beer Bottle Filler from the Empire Hotel. It was used during the Second World War, to fill quart bottles of beer for hotel patrons. This was necessary due to the shortage of bottled beer and the closing of hotels at 6pm, which was in place at the time. The exhibition presents an interesting insight into Goulburn’s early businesses, particularly cordial manufacturing.

On display too is the newly updated room 6 at St Clair, an example of a Victorian Dining Room, with table setting, incorporat- ing a display of collections of Victorian dolls, shoes, fans etc.

On display now until March 2016. St Clair Villa Museum and Archives is open to the public Fridays 10:30am-4pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm-4pm or by appointment. Entry is Free.

OUR CHRISTMAS WISH By Kay Muddiman – Media Officer Christmas traditionally is a time to exchange gifts, eat, drink and be merry – and we wouldn't want it any other way! However, there are a couple of downsides for our wildlife – one being the huge amount of rubbish that it gener- ates, much of which can pose a hazard for our wild creatures. The main offenders are drink cans, plastic bags and plastic rings – all of which can cause much suffering and eventual death. So, this is a reminder to please dis- pose of your Christmas rubbish responsibly, and before doing so flatten soft drink/beer cans (with the ring pull inside them); knot plastic bags (cutting the handle loops) and cut ALL plastic rings, including every ring on the plastic 6 pack holders. Even the tiny rings from opening some long-life milk cartons etc, can pose a hazard to our smallest creatures – such as antechinus, small skinks and birds – so please cut these too. It only takes a few seconds of your time, but could mean the difference between life and death for some poor unsuspecting crea- ture. The other downside is increased traffic over the Christmas holiday period, which sadly means increased colli- sions with our wildlife. If you are travelling during the holidays please watch out for our native creatures, espe- cially around daybreak and dusk, so that both you and the animals stay safe. Should you have the misfortune to collide with an animal, or come across one that is injured or in distress (in the area covered by our branch), please call our rescue number – 4822 3888, our volunteers will be manning the phone (24 hours a day, 7 days a week as they normally do, right across the holiday period) and will be only too happy to assist. If you need help outside our branch area please ring the WIRES main rescue number 1300 094 737. So, our Christmas wish is for everyone to have a wonderful Christmas and that we all, humans and animals alike, stay safe to enjoy the coming New Year. Until next time – take care all. Kay

Community First Responders C.F.R. / S.E.S.

These blokes and women do an absolutely fantastic and critical job in responding to medical emergencies in this area and dedicate a lot of their personal time in an effort to help and protect members of this, and other, communities.

C.F.R. Members are also member of the S.E.S., and are further trained in advanced First Aid techniques by the NSW Ambulance Service and could be called upon to provide advanced first aid at roadside collisions and other emergencies in areas where there is no immediate State ambulance service available or close by.

C.F.R. Members also have a positive working relationship with local Police, Ambulance and other emergency services.

In order to keep this vital C.F.R. Active in this community, further volunteers are urgently required. If you are interested in this line of activity - please contact Kevin Muffet on 4844 7143 who will be more than glad to explain the processes to you.

Regards from Kevin Muffet Team Leader 48447143 Windellama S.E.S.& C.F.R.

The C.F.R. is still in need of suitable volunteers to join the organisation as First Responders.

This would be a great career step for the younger folk who are looking to get into the medical field Ambulance Service, Police Force etc.

It would also be a great way for good local people to join in a winning team who are out there to help others.

If you would like to join the S.E.S. / C.F.R. then give Kev a call and speak with him about it. Cal
