From Saturday 13th June the NSW Government has eased some further restrictions. Up to 20 visitors are able to visit another household, and public gatherings of up to 20 people are now al- lowed. These numbers this includes sport training, but physical distancing must be maintained at all times (e.g all sport training must be non-contact). From Wednesday 1 July kids sport and community sport will be allowed to resume. The number of people allowed inside indoor venues will be determined by the one person per 4 square metre rule. As the community will be aware, outdoor gyms, playgrounds, dog off-leash areas and skate parks can all now also be used. This applies across the region to all of these facilities. From 1st of June Council reopened the Goulburn Mulwaree Library, Goulburn Regional Art Gal- lery, Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum, the Visitor Information Centre and the Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum. Each facility has strict new protocols in place, and guest numbers limited to allow for 4 square metres per person. NSW Health is clearly stating that the responsibility is on individuals to maintain distancing and hygiene practices. Please wash your hands before and after using equipment and assume the person who used equipment before you has the virus. The community is also encouraged to use their own disinfectant wipes prior to and after use of public equipment. Furthermore, please do not visit any Council facilities if you are feeling unwell.

Page 6 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - July 2020 GLOSSY BLACK COCKATOOS Most of us are familiar with the charismatic Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos that regularly pass through the Windellama area. You really can't miss them. They announce their presence with such a distinctive loud, high pitched, wailing call and when you look up to see the source of the sound you'll usually see a number (often 10 or more) of the large black birds, flying in a very leisurely manner overhead. They flap their wings so slowly, like they've got all the time in the world to get where they're going. Or if you haven't seen them you might have noticed some of their handiwork on the trunk of a gum tree. They can sense the wood-boring grubs just under the bark and their extremely strong beaks are perfect for gouging out the juicy treat. Never mind that they sometimes destroy the tree in their efforts to get to it. But there is another black cockatoo which passes much more quietly through Windellama, so quietly that you might have missed it. Its the Glossy Black Cockatoo. Its quite similar to the Yellow Tailed Black, but smaller, and instead of a yellow tail panel the Glossy has a striking red or orange- red tail panel and some yellow patches or spots on the head and neck. They commonly feed in (very quietly) in groups of 3, or in small or large groups, and their diet is almost exclusively Allocasuarina (She Oak) nuts. The adults mate for life and raise the young in nests made in the hollows of old Eucalyptus trees. These hollows take over 100 years to form. Unfortunately the Glossy Blacks aren't doing so well these days. Ongoing land clearing means the number of large hollow-bearing trees is diminishing, as are the stands of their favourite food, Allocasuarinas. They really need our help if they are to survive. Greening Australia is encouraging landholders to get on board their Glossy Black Cockatoo Habitat Restoration program. So far 46 hill top and ridge sites across the have been earmarked for planting 15000 Greening Australia supplied tube stock, mainly Allocauarinas, but also other woodland species like Eucalyptus and wattles. It's hoped that this program will ensure there's food for Glossys in our area in decades to come. It will also benefit other threatened woodland birds like the Hooded, Scarlet and Flame Robins, Diamond Firetail and Brown Treeceeper too. At least 4 Windellama property owners have joined the program. If you'd like to help our Glossy Black Cockatoos too, by planting trees on 1/2-1 hectares on your property, please contact Lucy Wenger at Greening Australia: 0409 030 059 [email protected] For more info: FUTURE LANDCARE EVENTS With the current (and continuing) uncertain position about the coronavirus and community meetings, Windellama Landcare has decided to defer our next workshop to Saturday 15 August. The workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to provide their input to future workshops in the series. We will keep you posted if there are any more changes – let’s hope we’re all back on track soon. Stay well. www.greeningaustralia.org.au/projects/glossy-black-cockatoo

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News May Rainfall For May we received at our place an extra 34mm of rain giving us a total of 39 mm. June Rainfall The only moisture received so far this month in the rain gauge is 8.5mm but we have also had some very heavy fogs, dews and frosts. So I hope the last few days of June will live up to the last few years average of approximately 40mm. We can live in hope! Fruit Trees By now most of our fruit trees have lost their leaves except for the Pink Lady apple and the Plum & Apricot cross but I think this tree had a late flush of leaves. As soon as the apple looses all its leaves spraying will start with a copper based spray. Garden Vegetables We planted 2 brown variety of Onion seeds in a tray and after two weeks new shoots have popped up. We have also planted seeds of red and white onions 5 days ago with the white on- ions already shooting. You can sow onion seed straight away in their bed but we don't as onions do not like competition from weeds. As I don't like weeding I leave them in the planting trays for at least 2 months or more before transplanting and while I think about getting their garden bed prepared. The Broad Beans were host to a heavy infestation of Aphids almost overnight. I tried a couple of organic spray methods to no avail but had success with a spray containing Spinetoram. Flower gardens From the mixed flower seeds planted we certainly got a mixed lot, Cosmos, different types of Poppies, Cornflowers, a lone Marigold, to name a few. We have received our carpet roses and have planted them. The existing roses are loosing their leaves and most have a touch of black spot from all the night moisture received. After I prune all the roses they will receive the same copper based spray as the fruit trees. Then a couple of weeks later I will spray again with a specific rose spray for black spot. At our place black spot is a never ending problem during period of moisture received. There is some evidence to suggest over fertilising with nitrogen products also contributes to this prob- lem. Maybe, the best thing to do for black spot is to purchase roses more resilient to this never ending problem? Bird Life At this stage the ducks that had a late round of young have not lost any young to predators like they normally do and now are nearly the same size as their parents. The different types of little bird numbers are increasing with the arrival of our residential swal- lows. Next Meeting No meetings have been organised at this stage. July in Your Garden By Irene Turner

Rose and fruit trees can be planted, and deciduous flowering trees such as prunus, flowering cherry, crab apple, flowering peach, lilac, laburnum vossi (golden chain tree) and pink and red hawthorn. Larger trees such as liquidambar, box elder, golden elm, claret and golden ash and silver birch. Weeping cherry, crab apple, elm, mulberry, also weeping Japanese maples. Transplant deciduous shrubs now. The middle of winter is the best time to move with minimal risk of transplant shock . Prune back before you start if it makes the plant easier to handle. Have the new spot already prepared so the plant can go straight into the hole, water well to settle the transplant into it new home. Water it with seasol. Rose and fruit tree pruning can start this month. VEGETABLES TO SOW NOW; Broad beans, peas and all varieties of onions, also strawberries and rhubarb and asparagus crowns. FLOWERS TO SOW NOW; Seedling of stock, viola, primula, wallflower, russel lupins, delphiniums, foxglove, poppies, sweet Williams and calendula, alyssum, snapdragons, verbena, dianthus, and sow seeds of Virginian stock. Things to do now; Keep potted cacti on the drier side throughout the colder months otherwise the roots may rot. Trim and tidy deciduous shrubs, except those in bloom in spring (prune those after flowering). Move the worm farm into a warm, sunny spot, and insulate it by covering with an old towel or carpet. Dig out running grasses that are invading garden beds while they`re weakened by the cold Lift and divide clumps of rudbeckia, aster, achillea and other per- ennials. Pinch dead flowers from bulbs that bloom early to prevent the formation of unwanted seed heads. Watch for snails in the cooler months when the pests, are more active. Sow Banksia and Bottlebrush seeds now. Fill the seed beds with sandy mix, place the seed tray in a frost-free spot and keep moist, but not over-wet, until seedlings appear. When they`re big enough to handle, transplant the seedling into individual pots. Grow them until they have enough roots to go into the ground.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR We find a new month is now upon us and who knows what challenge it may present for us, we certainly have had a round of challenges, firstly the drought, then the fires, and then Covid 19. We are indeed able to cope with all things that are thrown at us, thanks to the guidance of those responsible for our well being. Thank goodness we have at least had some rain, scattered as it has been. Our CFR Unit has been rather busy recently, but the SES side of our operations has had an easy time, thank goodness. There are some well meaning people who have decided to join our CFR unit, as well as being SES members, which a mandatory requirement prior to being CFR members. We are hoping to go back to face to face SES training shortly, on line training is available at present. CFR training is classed as essential so usual monthly training is continuing . Please keep safe for the time being, even though things are slowly returning to normal, keep some hand cleanser ready and use it frequently, especially at petrol filling stations as travellers are constantly moving vast distances, from who knows where. Kevin Muffet Deputy Unit Commander Windellama CFR/SES

Nerriga Gardeners

After what seems a long time without being able to gather we had a garden club meeting held outside in rather pleasant weather on Thursday 18th of June. Lots of catching up and discussion about the behaviour of plants since the fires. Some took nearly 5 months to decide they were alive and put in an appearance and others decided it was spring in autumn and flowered as though they were in the northern hemisphere. A few put in an appearance only to succumb to frost but others are coping better than usual or the frosts have not been severe enough or prolonged enough to cause damage. Daffodils are emerging from under severely burnt areas where nothing else is growing and the grass has been shooting up requiring the use of lawn mowers. Some people are moving on after being burnt out and others are rebuilding and everyone is trying to get fences repaired and watering systems working again. Since the lovely rain in February March it has threatened but rarely delivered more than a few mls at a time which is a little worrying with the dams and rivers falling again. Hopefully the second half of winter will have more but the long range forecast is not too encouraging for the Monaro and south east coast whereas the central districts are looking hopeful. Our next meeting will take place at Tess and Andrew’s new home near Berry on July 16th leaving Nerriga Hall around 9am after car pooling. As usual supply a plate please. We were extremely well fed and catered for this last meeting yet again. Happy gardening until then. Further info Kay on [email protected] all are welcome and it is very informal.

After our earlier“ ZOOM” experiences we are now using it as a tool to keep in touch with some of our more re- mote members. The photo taken on Saturday 20 June shows the boys unpacking their new toys. The items were purchased using funds provided by the Veolia Mulwaree Trust with support from TADPAI and the Village Discretionary Fund. The toys included a sand blast unit, sheet metal guillotine and bender, drum sander for woodwork, bar and pipe bender, tool/cutter sharpener and a variety of other specialised items. On Wednesday 24 June, Henry Gundry will visit the Men's Shed and present a novelty cheque to members to recognise the recent Veolia Mulwaree Trust grant of $35,310 for stage 2 develop- ment of the Men's Shed. More in the next Times edition. Member’s Profile: David Gock David was born in Kogarah, Sydney in 1963 and delivered by the now famous Dr William McBride. David explained how easily it is that paths can cross. 3 years ago at Trappers in Goulburn a bus stopped. The cafe was crowded and David shared a table with a nurse that happened to assist McBride in 1963. So maybe they had met before!

David is the youngest with 2 sisters. They went to Kingsgrove Primary and then Kingsgrove High school. David has a sense of humour as he said his dad bent bananas as a merchant at the mar- kets. Mum was a waitress and later worked as a machinist at Bisley. Eventually dad had lots of Bisley shirts. After year 12, he started a trade in plant mechanics with the then Commonwealth Department of Transport - Air Services. Working with large emergency vehicles - fire-fighting trucks and other specialised equipment meant he gained a wide range of mechanical, electrical, automotive, air (Continued on page 19)

Working at Sydney airport and with St George TAFE Kogarah nearby allowed him to work and undertake a Mechanical Engineering Associate Diploma. After ten years at Sydney airport, with a few short stints at places like Norfolk Island, (where he met his partner Maggie) a promotion became available at airport in 2005. This also meant moving from a service crew of 2 to 4, to being alone and responsible for all emergency equipment servicing at Canberra. Moving to , then to a 100 acre property with house at Mayfield provid- ed a welcome rural lifestyle. One of the first men he met on moving to Mayfield was Keith Hunter who lived 4km down the road. Keith’s “father figure” influence got him involved with the Show Society as the work health & safety officer, chief steward, gate co-ordinator and other odd jobs for the last 6-7 years, the RFS as a BF and equipment officer and the Men’s Shed. He was also in- volved with land care as treasurer and the TADPAI markets as an occasional seller but time pres- sures take their toll and he has relinquished some of these to a certain extent. David felt wasn’t able to support the local RFS as he would have like to during the summer fires but the 6 airport fire trucks that helped fight the January airport fires that burnt almost to Queanbeyan were serviced by 1 man, ie him. Prior to the fires, five Men’s Shed members visited David at his work, had a ride in a truck, didn’t want to leave and picked up some stairs for the shed. Now after 40 years of surviving the many organisational restructures, David’s view of 2020 is a philosophical “bookmark” in life, ie pre and post; drought, fires and Covid. Next time you’re in Canberra, going past the airport, you now know who keeps the Canberra Air- port Fire Service wheels turning. Excursions and activities are still on hold butFund raising is not. Just to take your mind off other stuff! Our longest distance member, Phil d fencer Myer, ferret extraordinaire, has obtained lots of brand new, hard case, reading glass cases in black or blue (limited numbers). $3 each or 2 for $5. Windellama Historical Society from Rex Hockey The following article appeared in the Golden Evening Penny Post in late May 1920 being from the Darling Downs Gazette (Qld. : 1881 - 1922), Wednesday 21 May 1919, page 5 THE TRUE SPANISH 'FLU. Dr. F. Glynn Connolly writes to the 'Courier' as follows:— Sir,—As I have witnessed all the epi-demics of influenza that have visited Brisbane I can assert positively that on no previous occasion have we had the same type as in the present one. The following are my reasons for these state-ments regarding the present epidemic: (1) It is more infectious than on any previous occasion. (2) It attacks younger people between the ages of 20 and 40 more readily than it does persons over 50 years of age. When it attacks people below 50 it is a much more serious disease than when it attacks persons above that age. In this respect it is unlike any other that we have witnessed before. (3) The serious complications, including pneumonia, that arise when persons do not go to bed and remain there until welI. (4)The prostration and loss of energy found in those between the ages of 20 and 40 is greater in the present epidemic than in any previous visitation. The symptoms met with in the pre-sent epidemic are precisely those met with in other parts of the world that have had experience of Spanish influenza. We can therefore rest assured that the present epidemic is the true Spanish 'flu that has been so serious in Melbourne and Sydney. Therefore there is no need to send to Sydney, as has been suggested, for some medical authority to tell us if this is the Spanish 'flu of the Southern States, as we have quite enough medical talent in this city to decide the matter. Brisbane is suffering from the true Spanish influenza, and the public should be guided by past experience. In all parts of the world the experts have quite agreed that the very best thing to do is to go to bed one experiencing the first symptoms, and to remain there until quite well, which means a week at least. The wiser members of the community will also seek medical attention in spite of the numerous correspondents in the Press who offer suggestions of different kinds with various nostrums. As we have not had this form of the disease before, it seems highly impro- bable that any of these can be the sligh-test use in the present case. My object in writing this letter is to staunchly urge on the public to take heed of the seriousness of this unusual epidemic, and to warn them not to treat it with the same indifference as they have done in previous epidemics of influenza.

Windellama Rural Fire Brigade Windellama Rural Fire Brigade remains open during the COVID19 pandemic as an essential emergency service for our community an in an emergency call Triple Zero (000) One element of ensuring our brigade is managed effectively and can provide a high level of service to our Windellama community and beyond is the work undertaken by members in operational support roles. We have recently appointed members to these roles to take us through the next fire season. We are very fortunate in the quality of members now in these roles as they are all eminently qualified with a combination of years of exceptional service, formal qualifications, have performed similar roles in other organisations as their professional occupations including the government, Defence and emergency services: • Training Coordinator - Michael Gazzard • Equipment Officer- Doug Gurney • Catering Coordinator - Lois Wake • Health and Safety Officer- Thomas Shannon • Communications Officer- Bev McGaw (Life Member) • Community Engagement Officer- Brendan Shannon • First Aid Coordinator - Mick Still Now is also a good time to work on preparing your home for the fire season, which is only a few months away, when you have time instead of waiting until the fire is on your doorstep. The more you prepare your home, the more likely it will survive a bush fire or ember attack. A well prepared home is easier and safer to defend and will offer more protection if you cannot leave. If you are thinking of burning cleared vegetation there are rules that you need to follow: • You must notify all adjoining neighbours and the RFS fire control centre (02) 6226 3100 at least 24 hours before lighting up. • You must supervise the burn at all times after lighting and ensure it is definitely out before leaving it unattended. • Piles should not be greater than 2m length or width 1.5 m height and cleared to 4.5 m • Before lighting consider the weather for the day of your planned burn and also several days afterwards and only light the pile if conditions are calm. All planned burns are registered on a database which means the RFS and other emergency services won’t be unnecessarily called out to a smoke sighting which is your pile burn. In an emergency call Triple Zero (000)
