Page 4 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - July 2018 Windellama Landcare Several members of Windellama Landcare were joined by David Hilhorst, from Goulburn Local Land Services, when we met on WINDELLAMA Sandy Point Road on Saturday 2 June to plant trees, eucalypts, at the southern end of the Chain of Ponds area. These trees replace those unfortunate ones which were planted earlier but were washed away during the tumultuous rainstorm we experienced some weeks later. With the gentle rain we have had recently they appear to be doing well. Then we all gathered around the new memorial stone in memory of Kevin Stewart with Chris and Stephanie, Tarago Landcare members joining us in drinking to the memory of Kevin and his services to Windellama the Windellama mob at the unveiling of the Landcare over the last few years. The stone is positioned Memorial stone close to the large Landcare sign, alongside the road. A small rock for a big/grand Landcare personality. Lunch was served - warming hot soups followed by Irene’s chocolate cake and then we hastened home to our own warm fire places as the day had become steadily colder and wetter. A PROGRAM OF PLANT, WEED AND TREE IDENTIFICATION IN THE FIELD AND SOIL/LAND MANAGEMENT is being developed for spring. Please let Tony know if you would be interested in attending and what you would like to see in this program. JOINING LANDCARE here is a close up of the stone If you are interested in joining local Windellama Landcare Group or you would like to come to one of our working bees, please call Tony or Sandra Greville on 0418 412 460 or Irene Turner on 02 4844 5214 or John Pearce on 0435 586 281. Children are very welcome too at our working bees. You will learn about tackling some of the land management issues of our sensitive soils. It is also a great social activity – meeting local people while learning about our unique local area. Annual membership of Windellama Landcare is $10.00 per family. Busy bees begin at 9:30 am with a cuppa. Morning tea and lunch are provided.

Nerriga Gardeners Rugged up against the chilly morning, members gathered at Helen's place to enjoy a cosy morning tea in front of the fire, then a walk round some of the property dotting in between the sun breaks to keep warm. Helen's place isn't a gardener's dream, but she enjoys waiting to see what nature does to change the landscape each year. Following the walk, we returned to the house and fire and enjoyed a relaxing lunch. Now the frosts have started appearing - white as snow this morning! Next meeting is on Thursday July 19 at Di's place. Stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks. Enquiries: Kay Hamer [email protected] or 4845 9021 (leave a message).

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR We have at last had some moisture falling , not much, but better than nothing. Light frosts have also been with us. This brings me to remind ourselves to the risk of hypothermia, especially after the last weekend. The CFR side of our operations has been very quiet, so let it stay that way. We have started a new round of training, so come along and see what goes on, seems a waste of time asking, but who knows, maybe someone will take up the idea. An open day is still in offering but no one has shown any interest, WHY? I note that seems to me some people are oblivious to double white lines on our roads, wake up those responsible. July in Your Garden By Irene Turner

Rose and fruit trees can be planted, and nurseries have deciduous flowering trees such as prunus, flowering cherry, flowering peach, crab apple, lilac, laburnum vossi (golden chain tree). Lots of lager trees also available such as liquidambar, box elder, golden elm, claret and golden ash and silver birch. Also weeping cherry, Japanese maples, mulberry to name a few. Rose and fruit tree pruning can start this month. Spray roses with lime sulfur after pruning. VEGETABLES; Sow broad beans, peas and all varieties onions and strawberries, Rhubarb and asparagus crowns can all be planted now, also lift and divide the old clumps and replant in soil which has plenty of old compost added. FLOWERS; Seedlings for sowing; Stock, viola, primula, wallflower, russel lupins, delphiniums, foxglove, poppies, sweet William, calendula, alyssum, snapdragons, verbena, diathus. Also sow Virginian stock seeds directly into the ground. Plant lily-of-valley pips (rhizomes) under deciduous trees in cool climate to form a ground cover. Spread garden lime around sweet peas, also eating peas, olive trees and lavender in acid-soil areas. Dig compost and gypsum into garden beds, so the soil is ready for spring planting. Use stakes and shadecloth as temporary windbreaks on exposed sides of newly planted trees, then remove at the end of winter. Prune crabapples to control shape and size. Also fig trees, spray with horticultural oil. Watch your ornamental and fruiting peaches carefully, and apply with copper-based spray for fungal leaf curl as soon as the buds begin to show colour. Top tip;- Check that your worm farm isn`t too cold for the inhabitants. Consider moving it into a slightly sunnier spot or covering it with an old piece of carpet for insulation. Cut off suckers appearing from below the graft of fruit trees, such as plum, peach, cherry and apple, cut them off as low down as possible or break off if they are small.

Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News In July this year our Garden Club will host a Pot Luck event at the Windellama Progress Hall on Thurday 12th starting at 11.30am. Cost is $15.00 per person. RSVP on 48447061 by Monday 9th July will be greatly appreciated. On Saturday August 11th we will host our Annual Cake Auction where all funds raised will go to the Goulburn Can-Assist. Last year through the support of the community we received plenty of donations of cakes etc., for auction that helped in raising funds for the Goulburn Can-Assist. Once again we seek the communities support in cake, scones, confectionary and pie donations for this event. As predicted last month the weather has turned bloody cold. On Sunday morning 17 June at 9am it was 4 degrees Celsius at our place. The only rain we are receiving feels like ice and arrives in small showers that don't last long. The most rain received in 24hours was 3.5mm on the 7th of this month, total for this month so far is 20mm up to 16th, but every little bit helps. The citrus trees at our place are not liking the cold and cold winds with the Meyer lemon sulking. The Lisbon lemon is still looking good – well better than the Meyer lemon. If your citrus leaves are turning yellow don't be tempted to feed with a nitrogen fertilizer because any new shoots that grow will soon turn black when the first decent frost hits them. Wait to spring to feed with a complete citrus fertilizer. However, you can apply some Dolomite lime around the base of the tree to replace minerals. Also, keep-up the liquid seaweed foliar spray and a spray with liquid potassium occasionaly helps. In our vegetable garden growth of plants have slowed and also what weeds that poke their shoots up. At least it's easy to remove the weeds by hand in the moist soil. When the seedlings reach 100mm in height we will scratch the soil surface surrounding them and add a light mulch e.g. Sugar Cane to retain moisture received and also to let moisture penertrate, surpress weeds and help prevent the soil surface caking. At our place we have already cut out all the rampant growth reaching for the sky in the fruit trees. Towards the end of winter the fruit trees will have their final prune where all lower branches pointing to the ground, damaged branches, criss-crossed branches, branches still to high will be removed or cut back. On the Tuesday 3rd July our Club and Willow Glen will carry out garden maintenance at St. Barts. Providing it's not raining. Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

Page 20 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - July 2018 FEATHERS & SPINES! By Kay Muddiman – Media Officer First – the feathers! A beautiful Barn Owl (Tyto alba) came into care one evening early in May, after flying into a window in the Crestwood Estate at Goulburn and knocking himself unconscious. We get lots of daytime calls for birds that have injured themselves by flying into windows, but this evening call for a nocturnal bird was a complete surprise. He came around after a while and thankfully didn't have any visible injuries. The next day he was taken for a vet examination, including checking his eyes - perfect eyesight is vital to these birds. He was given the 'all clear', so that night he was taken back out to Crestwood where he was released near the river. The accompanying pics were taken during his vet examination - unfortunately it was impossible to get a photo of his release, because as soon as the box was opened he took off, flying beautifully - obviously happy to be home. Second – the spines! Some weeks back we had a call for an echidna at that had somehow fallen into an ancient (fortunately long unused!) brick lined septic tank and was unable to get out. It responded to all efforts to get him out by ‘digging in’, making the task that much harder! It took the assistance of a young teenage boy to shimmy down into the tank and dig him out. Finally, after not a little effort, the echidna was retrieved. Other than being very thirsty and wanting a drink, he was thankfully uninjured, so was able to be released straight away. The caller (the occupier of the premises) was most distressed about the echidna's plight, assuring us that she would be getting her husband to cover the tank to prevent any other creature from getting into the same predicament. Another word on feathers! At the time of writing this our bird co-ordinator reports that she has two galahs in care that are underweight and debilitated, due to the dry weather and resulting lack of food. We are also unfortunately starting to get young parrots in that are extremely underweight and weak for the same reason. If they survive and their weight improves, and to give them the best chance of survival, they will be kept in care over winter and released with the Top left: The Barn Owl being examined by vet coming of warmer weather in spring Top right: Shows the bird’s beautiful heart shaped face. Finally – birdbaths! Top right: The ancient (and guilty) septic tank. Bottom: The Echidna refreshing after its ordeal Due to the dry conditions and our current erratic weather patterns, many of the water sources our wildlife rely on are disappearing, so please continue to keep your birdbaths and other water containers topped up. In fact, they should be topped up year-round. Even in the cooler weather birds need water to groom their feathers daily, so don’t assume they’re only visiting birdbaths on hot summer days. At our place we’ve even had birds trying to break the ice in our birdbaths first thing on winter mornings to access the water! Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring the WIRES Rescue Number 1300 094737. Your call will be logged and directed to our branch electronically, so that we can respond accordingly. As always, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist. Until next time, take care all – Kay

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com On Tuesday 5th June a few brave souls visited the Goulburn Community Gardens at the Westley Centre. The weather was bleak and very cold. Three went early because of weather. Those remaining had a tour of the gardens and talk about how the garden was established on top of the old tennis court. The gardens were raised with dirt brought in. The plots are leased to the public, who wish to grow things and are community friendly. See Ray Shields if you are interested in going for a look or hiring a plot for the year. They had herbs, flowers, peas, spinach and some greens all growing well. They have a worm farm and a compost heap, to help clean up your plots and replenish their soil. Thank you to Ray , and Pat for showing us the gardens. After morning tea we went onto the Riversdale Gardens, where some strong volunteers were weeding the vegie patch and some of the gardens. We had a tour of the gardens and told about the history of the house and grounds, some of their fruit trees date back to 1800. Thank you to the members of Riversdale for showing us their gardens. Not much doing in our gardens. Anna is potting up plants. Irene has broad beans up and cabbages and greens, roses still flowering and some strawberry plants, and the camellia trees are in bloom. At this stage, there is no venue for the next garden meeting. Irene
