The start of an incredible journey

Tarbagatay, Buryatia, Siberia, Russia Photos: © Alexander Khimushin / The World In Faces Another difficulty is that I do everything absolutely on my own financially and physically. People often do not realise it was my own initiative right from the beginning. They think it is an assignment from, say, National Geographic, or something similar. It isn’t. While there is a lot of buzz on the internet about the project – it has been published by media in over 60 countries by now – the truth is I have to handle it all on my own. And I am a perpetual traveller, who after 10 years on the road, has just spent two months in the real world of business, trying to get just one exhibition organised. I did not like the experience. Most of the people I dealt with don’t realise why I do it – they think there is money involved and try to squeeze something out of me. I think my place is back on the road, being a real digital nomad – to put another photo online is just the click of a button, as opposed to dealing with these real-life exhibitions, books and all the hustle that surrounds it all. Into the future

The good thing is – the media exposure and the idea behind it have attracted lots of attention. Lately, I have started to feel I can finally take it to a new level. Just the other day I was discussing an exhibition at the UN; earlier Ulchi girl. Bogorodskoe, , Far East, Siberia this year I was working with them by creating a collage from my photo portraits to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the declaration of human rights. There are more exhibitions in the pipeline. However, taking into account the non-commercial nature of the project, the central focus always remains funds. Funds are required to organise most of these events and each time I need to look for sponsors. Meanwhile, time is a precious asset to me, and this life is the only one I have. I need to spend the time I have wisely. While many people ask about exhibitions they would love to see in their countries, it takes an enormous amount of time to find funding and organise such events. I think if nothing changes, I'll continue travelling to visit more places and photograph more people and keep this project on the internet. In the mind of the observer

Diversity, dignity, beauty, wisdom, the vibrancy of cultures and traditions of people of different ethnicities, reflected in the portraits of The World In Faces photo project, should make viewers realise we all live in a beautiful, yet so fragile world. The world is our shared home for people of different ethnicities, religions and cultures. Every nation is no better or worse than others; we are merely different. However, our differences should not be an obstacle in understanding each other. Quite the opposite. We must admire and respect our diversity and the uniqueness of every nation living on this planet. My vision is the world without hatred. We need to make it a bit more tolerant Even young woman. Sakha Republic, Russia and a kinder place to live in for us all. No doubt everyone knows it’s very cold and sparsely populated, but what do we know about people living there? During my solo journey, I drove to many remote locations, from the shores of Lake Baikal to the edge of the Sea of Japan, from the endless steppes of Mongolia to the coldest place on Earth, Yakutia. All with only one mission – to capture the faces and the traditions of the various groups of indigenous people living there. While some of the ethnic groups are dominant in their regions, many others are on the edge of disappearing, with a total population as low as only a hundred people. Until now they have remained largely unknown to the outside world. Equipment

Away from these spectacular returns, an analysis of a large number of lots bought and subsequently re-sold at auction (repeat sales) offers a much more realistic general picture of the returns that can be expected on the market. With several albums to her name, Petronel Baard needs no introduction. Her most recent release is now available, and DEKAT caught up with her in Wilderness to hear more about it.

“You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul” – George Bernard Shaw

arrive at the restaurant in Wilderness for my interview with Petronel Baard, the Afrikaans singer and cabaret artist: the tall woman with massive talent and a sensitive soul. I know she’d had a photo Ishoot earlier in the day with photographer and friend, Wilhelm Vincent. I provided my grandfather’s heavy old nineteen-something full-length mirror for the shoot, and had already seen a few of the images from the eccentric duo: Petronel made up and in her evening dress, criss-crossing the Wilderness Some things never change. Whatever beach barefoot. They carried all the necessary paraphernalia, in search her art requires of her, she always of the perfect picture – the right gives: royally and without reservation. background, feeling and mood – with the childlike expectation of receiving something wonderful from the eye of the muse who would capture the essence of Petronel and her new album, Die heelal draai [The universe turns]. I wait for her outside the restaurant, and then hear a voice ringing out from indoors – unmistakeably Petronel. As I enter I catch a glimpse of her exiting through another door – offloading and setting up the equipment for a performance, this time for Riana Scheepers’s intimate launch of her new book, Stormkind. “Just for my southern Cape friends,” the ever-popular Afrikaans writer remarks with a smile when I bump into her unexpectedly. I laugh, a bit embarrassed to realise I shouldn’t really be surprised. It’s just another day in the life of fadista Baard! Moving effortlessly from one extreme to the other – all in the name and love of art. In the 20 years or so since launching her professional music career as winner of the ATKV Crescendo, Petronel’s universe has taken a number of turns. But some things never change. Whatever her art requires and demands of her, she always gives: royally and without reservation.

44 45 Here the influence of friend, producer and celebrated musician, Schalk Maas (from Skallabrak and now Soetmelk) is undeniably, unmistakeably, inextricably woven into the whole approach and texture of the album. The combined work of these two talented musicians – with their super-effective team of knowledgeable friends and family always ready to provide help and support – has produced a masterly product, with a comfortable balance of contrasting elements. Their professional journey together began 10 years ago, with a successful and popular music and wine pairing for Riebeek Cellars (with fellow musician and inspiration, Altan Ungerer), and they have been performing together ever since. They demonstrate an exceptional intuitive musical understanding of, and respect for, one another on the stage, which makes for a uniquely complementary mix. This bond filters through into the album. “Skalla managed the creation of this CD with an iron discipline. He made sure everything happened at the right time, that nothing was leaked in advance, that we took our time. You know I’m not like that. I want to share everything with the whole world as quickly as I can. And obviously his most important job was to keep me calm,” she adds sympathetically, with a twinkle in her eye.

“Daar’s brood op die tafel en ek wil dit met jou deel. Ek wat vir jou ’n kers brand, jou ’n wysie speel” [There’s bread on the table and I want to share it with you. Me, who burns a candle for you, plays a melody for you] (Die heelal draai, track 1)

This is what Die heelal draai has to offer. A musical feast that Petronel Baard humbly lays at the feet of her audience, Ek’s ’n ordentlike bord kos – jy soek net takeaways [I’m a decent plate warmly inviting them to commune. The South African Mint issues sought-after commemorative coin series.

ention Nelson Mandela in any conversation and more often than not the name will instantly elicit nods of approval, words of admiration and praise. M Not only is South Africa’s first democratic president globally respected and revered for his pivotal role in laying a firm foundation for a unified country and nation, he is widely considered one of the most outstanding statesmen of our time for consistently leading by example to foster goodwill, unity and respect for diversity. A staunch proponent of the rainbow nation, Madiba’s legacy will forever be celebrated and treasured. By once again setting the pace in producing a series of special commemorative coins to mark a century since the birth of this remarkable man on 18 July 1918, the South African Mint, a subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank, is contributing in no small measure to celebrating this milestone and preserving Nelson Mandela’s legacy. The South African Mint has for many years meticulously been curating and presenting to the world, the country’s rich tapestry of culture and history, of which it is the custodian. Three-coin set in glossy gift box The different coin series reflect interpretations of the past and present and masterfully depict local legends, inventions, nature and the environment. In addition, the South African Mint is home to the iconic Krugerrand. This world-famous coin, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017, is widely regarded as the coin that started modern gold coin investing. Centenary coin range The full 2018 Mandela Centenary coin range comprises four coins: a 1 oz (24ct) gold R500 coin, a 1 oz sterling-silver R50 coin, a bronze alloy R50 coin and a collectable commemorative R5 circulation coin. The coins also come in three set variations: a four-coin set, made up of all four coins in the range (gold, silver, bronze and the R5 commemorative coin); a three-coin set, which is comprised of the bronze, silver and R5 commemorative coin; and lastly, a launch set, made up of the 1 oz gold coin and medallion of the Mandela Centenary logo. The sets are packaged in a striking, glossy gift box accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Only 500 of the three-coin sets, 200 of the four-coin sets and 100 of the launch sets will be made available. Four-coin set in glossy gift box

Having grown up in the city, Foulis regards concrete as the quintessence of city living. “Concrete symbolises life and community. Solid and durable, it serves as the protective housing of the community. As our society changes and grows, we influence the city’s infrastructure and thus its concrete appearance.” The Art of Destruction is inspired by the deconstruction of buildings, and specifically the lives of these structures. This collection interprets the concept of deconstruction through the lens of Japanese garment design. This contemporary Japanese style mirrors the great, monumental buildings of history, as both have clean lines and convey elegance. The audience enters a non-linear narrative through the gaze of two artists – co-founders of Bag Factory Artists Studios David Koloane and Patrick Kagiso Mautloa – and Thuli Mtambo James, director of Bag Factory Artists Studios.

Twenty-seven-year-old Zambri, an emerging creative and architectural lighting designer, won the Industrial Design Category. “I was interested in the way you can mould cement like a plastic to produce something functional.” His concept bicycle aims to benefit the user by encouraging psychological wellbeing and promoting physical health. The piece shows that cement can be enjoyed while also making a bold statement with minimal visual cues. The bicycle is lightweight, functional and simple – delicate in idea yet physically strong. Zambri allows one to explore a journey that evokes passion, freedom and independence. He says the bicycle is also a symbolic reminder of the past: “While we may look to the past, we are always moving forward in space and time.” The concrete contains the bicycle’s history, showing that great designs never change but are developed into symbolic icons. It shows the design’s forward progress in history. “Other meanings are evoked, too. Are digital currencies (cryptocurrencies or private money) like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash, Litecoin and Ripple here to stay? Financial experts say they probably are. Cryptocurrencies have been designed to make transactions quicker and easier, but be warned... We usually only hear about those who have become rich from cryptocurrencies, but to date they are not regulated – and investments can go badly wrong.

Iconic writing instrument pays tribute to the power of gifting, imagination and the importance of transmitting ideas and dreams to others.

In this digital day and age, where the internet and social media allow us not only to communicate instantly, but also to increasingly shape our relationships, personal lives and sense of self, it’s all too easy to assume that the tradition of, and need for, putting pen to paper to express our emotions, capture images or transmit thoughts is fading fast. Not so, stressed Montblanc head of writing culture, Lynn Serfaty, during an interview with Wilma de Bruin on the eve of the launch of Montblanc’s Meisterstück Le Petit Prince collection in New York earlier this year.

he age-old practice of putting pen to paper is alive and well. This is borne out by the fact that the Meisterstück pen is the most gifted Montblanc writing instrument. The top-end of the market, in particular, “Tis very dynamic, be it over Christmas or for any other special occasion,” Serfaty points out. Interestingly, gifting goes both ways: it is gifted by grandparents and parents to their children, but, at the same time, also gifted by children to their parents and grandparents, she adds. “Gifting for Meisterstück is not only a very important part of the business; it’s also a noble part, so it is something that we want to nurture. In fact, part of the work we did with the Petit Prince edition, is to further entrench Meisterstück as a classic, iconic gift.” Digital age, social media She goes on to say that, if anything, the digital age has reactivated the age- old debate dating back to Socrates and Plato about the relative importance of written culture against oral, visual and representation culture. “Moreover, I believe social media plays an active role in ‘blending’ the three big categories of communication – writing, drawing, talking – in the most creative way. For example, the variety of writing styles and self-expression emanating from the digital age is absolutely stunning: you can reform words, create new words, mix images with writing, express yourself orally – and, across the board, it’s having a positive effect. “This notion from social media, namely that self-expression is possible, relevant and interesting, is something that we fully embrace. We actually tap into this transformation and incorporate it in our know-how and expertise,” says Serfaty.

So, does this mean we can expect a third collaboration like this? “Quite probably. We’re committed to continue partnering with like-minded artists to find new and creative ways of bringing to life our vision. We have not started working on anything yet. We’re still 100% in this creative project, working on the world tour. We might start working on something new in a year or two. We’re not in a hurry…” he responds. Greater than the sum

Pared-down style, simplified to its most basic elements, is greater than the sum of its parts. There’s nothing accidental in the way tone- on-tone palettes provide a subtle canvas to splash accents and the odd statement to create focal points of interest. Watch the wrist L’ASTRONOMO

L’Astronomo Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Moon Phases Equation of Time GMT 50mm is the first of Panerai’s creations to have moon phase indication and an innovative system using polarised crystals to indicate the date. This remarkable new made-to- order timepiece can be personalised, enhancing the series dedicated to the genius of Galileo Galilei. A Luminor 1950 case includes an iconic design that is part of the fascinating history of Officine Panerai. It encloses a concentration of technical solutions demonstrating the ability of the Florentine brand to interpret traditional complications in ways that are always distinctive, bringing innovation into the world of high- quality sports watchmaking. The skeletonised movement, the P.2005/GLS (Galileo Luna Scheletrato), is personalised to operate in accordance with the geographical coordinates of a place chosen by the client. It provides the same range of functions as the first L’Astronomo, and in addition, GMT and two other innovations: indication of the phases of the moon and an original system for displaying the date using polarised crystals. 88 89 SIHH CARTIER WATCH COLLECTION PanthÈre de CArtier

For 2018 the Panthère de Cartier watch adopts a generous range of feminine looks. The bracelet, available in a double or triple loop, glints with lusty sensuality. Chain links in yellow gold, pink gold or white gold coil seductively around the wrist. Its flowing form is supple on the skin as the iconic style of the Panthère de Cartier watch layers elegance upon elegance. The dainty square case with rounded corners and the intuitive design are quintessentially Cartier. Diamond paving on the case, and on the bezel in selected pink gold and white gold versions, serves to maximise the visual appeal. These bejewelled variations are complemented by renditions of the original Panthère de Cartier watch in pink gold entirely paved with diamonds, yellow gold, pink gold and steel, and steel, their bezels paved with diamonds.

Cartier Libre

The Cartier Libre collection was borne of a desire to play with the maison’s signature watch shapes. They are stretched, shrunk and transformed into objects of fantasy with unbridled creative licence. Cartier Libre appeals to the collectionneuse, the figure of the watchmaking collector. Previously unseen shapes echo the Baignoire and Crash watches. Their proportions are disrupted, volumes accentuated and lines lengthened. Seeking to disrupt the Cartier repertoire, these are adventures in extravagance where precious materials and contrasting colours are breathtakingly feminine and minimalist in design. The aesthetic that emerges is like no other. It defies categorisation. The Cartier codes are present; whether visible or perceptible only to the eye of the connoisseur, they are the ultimate guarantee of authenticity. The result is radical, brazen, paradoxical: the tension between refinement and excess. Five limited-edition individually numbered jewellery watches meet a single definition: the immediately recognisable Cartier signature. Baignoire Infinie

ANTI-MAGNETIC The calibre 1847 MC features anti-magnetic nickel phosphorus components in the escapement and movement mechanisms, as well as a shield made from a paramagnetic alloy, rendering the calibre effectively resistant to the powerful magnetic fields a watch may be exposed to in everyday life. WATER-RESISTANCE Thanks to the screw-down assembly design, the new Santos de Cartier offers water-resistance up to 10 bar (-100 metres) with minimal case thickness. RESISTANCE TO VARIATIONS The new Santos de Cartier watch has been assembled, calibrated and tested by the Cartier Manufacture workshops for resistance to variations in position, humidity, temperature, pressure, exposure to impact and acceleration, and to prevent these factors from interfering with the accuracy of the watch. QUALITY CONTROLS The decisive final stage of quality control inspections is even more rigorous for the new Santos de Cartier watch. These quality controls are determined by the behaviour observed during the service life of a watch. The objective is to guarantee optimum levels of performance and reliability over the years. The Santos de Cartier watch is proactive in its transformation: this watchmaking classic of the maison perpetuates the spirit, style and hunger for progress of men who change the world, inspired by Alberto Santos-Dumont.

98 99 MOTORING A celebration of beauty!

‘Hollywood on the Lake’ was the theme of the annual 2018 Concorso d’Eleganza, hosted by BMW Group Classic and Italy’s Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. In keeping with this theme, glamour and beauty abounded at this iconic gathering of truly special cars, motorcycles and people.

BMW 507 Roadster am one extremely lucky lady. I say this because I have been invited to the Concorso d’Eleganza a number of times. It’s such an enormous honour! An invitation to the world’s most exclusive and traditional Iheritage event for historic automobiles and motorcycles is one of the most sought-after invites on the automotive calendar… because it really is Something Seriously Special. Perhaps surprisingly, when I arrive at the event each time, I’m still utterly blown away by its beauty. This is one event I will never ever tire of attending. Each year, the event kicks off with an immensely glamorous cocktail party on a Friday evening (this year, May 25 was THE date). We all put on our glad rags and travel by boat past George Clooney’s pad to the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, which nestles on the shores of Lake Como. It truly is a grand hotel; even a visit to the bathroom is a splendid occasion. On arrival, one quaffs Pommery and pretends that this is a normal day (trust me, in my case, no one is fooled – my excitement is palpable). During the cocktail party we’re always treated to the world premiere of an exceptional car and/or motorcycle and this year we’re blown away by the BMW Motorrad Concept 9cento (pronounced ‘nove cento’). This adventure sport model – coincidentally, the perfect choice for a spontaneous trip to Lake Como – combines the appropriate The next morning, we once again power with reliable sports touring board our boat and race towards properties and, above all, lots of the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este. riding fun. We agree that the innovative storage space concept is a real win; this clip-on case not only offers storage space, it also extends the seating area for the passenger. It’s too clever! We also lay eyes on the first-ever SUV from Rolls-Royce, the Cullinan, for the first time. Named after the biggest diamond to be discovered, the Cullinan is an all-terrain vehicle that morphs the vision of authentic and luxurious off-road travel into reality. All-wheel drive and all-wheel steering, electronically controlled system for the air suspension, a large tailgate and a glass partition between the passenger compartment and the stowage space make travelling effortless. “Our Rolls-Royce Cullinan defines the possibilities and the scale of luxury anew. It embodies luxury in its purest form combined with perfect utility and the highest possible off-road capabilities,” Torsten Müller- Ötvös, CEO Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, tells DEKAT. Epitomising luxury and stylishness, there’s no doubt the Cullinan will make a real statement on the roads of South Africa when it arrives in November this year. The next morning, we once again board our boat and race towards the Grand Hotel Villa d’Este, which has been transformed overnight. In the hotel’s majestic grounds are 51 historic cars, which are being presented in eight classes:

The Formula One class is especially innovative; this is the first time we’re being treated to these automotive gems. The historic cars are complemented by various concept cars – and the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupé takes centre stage.
