24 NOVEMBER 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5776 Kol Nidre Appeal By Valerie Preston Mercado

If we were playing one of the old T.V. game shows from the 60s or 70s, like Password or the $100,000 Pyramid, you might hear the following clues:

• Things we take pride in. • Things we want to receive. • Things we want to protect. • Things we want to preserve. • Things we want to pass on to our children.

But what if we were playing a Jewish version of the game? Perhaps you would say that “our heritage ” or “ our diverse and inclusive membership” are the “Things we take pride in.” Or that “G-d’s blessings” or “a call or visit from the Rabbi at a time of illness or loss” are the “Things we want to receive.” And what about the things we want to protect? Would “the continuity of our people” or “a close-knit sense of community” be a good clue in the Jewish version of the game? What is it that we want to preserve? We might answer, “Our traditions.” Or “a steady stream of simchas to celebrate.” And what, my friends, are the things we want to pass on to our children? What if getting the right answer to the question depended on the clue you gave? What would YOUR clue be? Think about it. And if you don’t have children or grandchildren of your own, think about your nieces and nephews or your friends’ children. Think about the beautiful children in our preschool or our Religious School. Go ahead. The clock is winding down. The game is on the line. You have to hit the buzzer. What is the clue YOU would give? The truth, of course, is that whether we call them clues in a made-up game or essential parts of our Jewish lives, they are all right here, today, right now: that diverse, inclusive tight knit community, that sense of yiddishkeit, that heritage, our future stream of simchas, our traditions, our many blessings from G-d – they are all right here. We can see them. We can feel them. Tomorrow night we’ll even be able to taste some of them! But will they all be here next year? Well, it depends. Let’s think about that age-old psychology question: “Is a 16 oz. glass containing 8 oz. of water half full or half empty?” Well, it depends. On what does it depend, you may ask? “It depends upon your relationship to the glass.” And what in the world does that mean? It depends on whether you fill the glass with water or simply drink from it. You see, my friends, if you participate in filling the glass, you are a contributor, you have a stake in the glass, and you will always feel like it is half full. You will always see its potential, and you will always strive to fill it up. On the other hand, if all you do is drink from it, you will always see it as half empty. Not only will the glass never seem filled, but YOU will never feel “FULFILLED.” And just as this is true for cups of water, I believe it is true for communities. It is true for our TBTST community but with one exception. Whether you come to shul one or two days a year (perhaps tonight, perhaps to say Kaddish, or at some other time that is meaningful to you), or you come almost every day, or somewhere in between, we will all reach out to our synagogue at some moment in time. Everyone, yes EVERYONE, will drink from the shul cup at some point. It may be at a simcha such as the birth of a child or grandchild, at a bar or bat mitzvah, or at an aufruf or wedding. Or it may be at a time of serious illness or the death of a loved one. It may be to enrich your Jewish education, or it may be to seek counsel at a time of need. It may be when grappling with the loss of your job – or simply the loss of your way. It may be due to a disagreement with a family member or friend. Or perhaps it will be due to an argument – with G-d. Yes, at some moment in time, you are going to need to drink from the synagogue cup. Will you have to turn away thirsty? The optimist in me would like to believe that I do not have to ask you this evening to make a Kol Nidre pledge. But the realist in me knows that I must. I must because this is not a game, with clues and buzzers, but serious business. I must because I cannot merely make the assumption that you will do it. Indeed, such an assumption would fly in the face of this most disconcerting fact: last year Nancy Small stood before you and asked for 100 percent participation in our High Holiday appeal. And yet more than 45 percent of our members did NOT make a Kol Nidre contribution of any amount. My friends, I want you to know something: a significant percentage of our operating budget is generated by our Kol Nidre Appeal. The success of tonight’s Kol Nidre Appeal is critical; we need those who made a donation last year to give again and for those who have Appeal continued on next page 25 NOVEMBER 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5776 Appeal continued not done so in the past to do so this year. The leadership of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek is not blind to the financial difficulties that many have faced and continue to face these days. Indeed, one of our primary objectives is to provide help to an increasing number of members in need. But EVEN for those of you having a tough time financially, I would urge you to make at least a small Kol Nidre pledge. And I ask you to do so, not only for your shul, but for yourselves, as well. Every person, no matter what his or her circumstances and capabilities, for his or her own benefit, needs to personally experience the feeling of giving, the feeling of participating in a just cause, the feeling – of filling up the cup. TO BE PROUD…We are proud of the wonderful accomplishments and strides we are making to gain a national and international presence. Alan Gottesman who is a member of our congregation is recently installed International President of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs. Our own men’s club has won 2 Torch awards for special programming. We are proud to announce that TBTST has won a Solomon Schechter award recognizing our variety of Shabbat services & programs; offering traditional torah readings, the triennial readings, orthodox services and a monthly meditation service. We have also won a Solomon Schechter award for our Shoah/Holocaust 6 Million Steps walk this past spring organized by students from our Hebrew School and Youth Department. We are embarking on a whole new way to bring Hebrew language instruction into our class- rooms and expose our students to modern Hebrew through interactive online learning, both as a language and a culture. We are proud to say our Hebrew School enrollment is growing and our preschool has waiting lists. Our Early Childhood Center has upgraded learning programs and the ECC Parent Service organization is bringing in fun new fundraising events like the Fashion Show they hosted this past spring. Our pre-Kadima, Kadima and USY youth groups make us proud as they represent us across the region. Our strong values and caring for our community show as we hosted our Pink Shabbat to raise awareness of the high incidence of breast and ovarian cancer in the Ashkenazi Jewish population. I hope that every person sitting here tonight will contemplate for a moment what you are proud of as a member of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek, what it is that YOU want to receive from your shul community, what it is that YOU want to make certain is preserved, what it is that YOU want to know is protected, and what it is that YOU will pass on to generations to come. And once you have done so, I hope you will push down the appropriate tab on your Kol Nidre pledge card and pass it down to the end of the aisle so the ushers can collect it. On behalf of myself, my husband, Javier, our son Joshua, and the leadership of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek I want to wish each of you a happy and sweet New Year and a meaningful fast. May you feel the warmth of our loving, extraordinary shul. May you experience G-d’s many blessings and be sealed in the book of life. And may each of you leave here this evening having personally ensured that our synagogue’s cup truly runneth over. Thank you. G’mar Hatimah Tovah. Valerie Preston Mercado

29 NOVEMBER 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5776 Tree of Life

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi- tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180. If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $______Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for: Name (English)______(Hebrew)______Mother's Name (Hebrew)______31 NOVEMBER 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5776 Yahrzeits NOVEMBER CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5776 NAME NOVEMBER CHESHVAN/KISLEV 5776 NAME 11/1 19 Abram Goldberg 11/17 5 Rose Niman 11/1 19 Leslie Kaufman 11/18 6 Herbert Eisenberg 11/2 20 Sol Gold 11/18 6 Pamela Grossman 11/2 20 Louis Kushlin 11/18 6 Thelma Wasoff 11/2 20 Burton Siegel 11/18 6 Rick Wellner 11/2 20 Sam Mitchel 11/18 6 Herbert Eisenberg JOIN 11/2 20 Sigmund Frosch 11/18 6 Arthur Ginsburg 11/3 21 Abraham Foster 11/19 7 Clara Davis 11/3 21 Samuel Kalter 11/20 8 Hersch Berman CANTOR 11/4 22 Joseph Watynski 11/20 8 Bernard Lerner 11/4 22 Maurice Shacket 11/20 8 Jean Teplitsky 11/4 22 Marvin Reichenthaler 11/21 9 Jacob Hochman 11/4 22 Robert Spinerr 11/21 9 Sydney Phillips JONATHAN 11/4 22 Priscilla Kate Mayor 11/21 9 Harry Yasgoor 11/5 23 Pamela Frank 11/21 9 Gussie Fink 11/5 23 Elsie Sussman 11/22 10 Herman Abrams ANGRESS 11/6 24 Bernard Kravetzky 11/22 10 Blanche Watsky 11/7 25 Lillian Klugerman 11/22 10 Louis Price 11/7 25 Dora Zuchoff 11/22 10 Cynthia Wasserman FOR OUR 11/8 26 Barbara Saul 11/22 10 Esther Miller 11/9 27 Kenneth Mintz 11/22 10 Ida Levine 11/9 27 Nathan Plaks 11/22 10 Mayor Kaplan 11/9 27 Stanley Atkins 11/23 11 Shirley Berger ALL NEW 11/10 28 Thelma Richman 11/23 11 Meyer Weintraub 11/10 28 Morris Pickoff 11/24 12 Beryl Newman 11/10 28 Seth Policzer 11/24 12 Dov Cohen FRIDAY NIGHT 11/10 28 Martha Rosenfeld 11/24 12 Mollie Epstein 11/10 28 Howard Leibov 11/24 12 Trude Ackerman 11/10 28 Kitty Schwartz 11/24 12 David Sherman SERVICES 11/11 29 Sylvia Rosenkranz 11/24 12 Evelyn Bass 11/11 29 Milton Lenoff 11/24 12 Dora Shooster 11/11 29 Florence Rothenberg 11/25 13 Liza Kliegman 11/11 29 Carol Baker 11/25 13 Richard Rosen 11/11 29 Edna Schwartz 11/27 15 Anna Schribman 11/13 1 Rena Bass Forman 11/27 15 Judith Schorr 11/13 1 Alexander Klar 11/27 15 Abraham Feinzig 11/14 2 Gloria Fried 11/28 16 Samuel Eisenberg 11/14 2 Joan Meiselman 11/28 16 Jason Chehova 11/14 2 Lawrence Hepner 11/28 16 Samuel Cohn 11/15 3 Joseph Lupkin 11/28 16 Jack Rosenblatt 11/16 4 Anne Becker 11/29 17 Stella Selby 11/16 4 Herbert Kranzler 11/30 18 Margaret Sadkin 11/16 4 Melvin Goldberg 11/30 18 Hyman Schwartz Become an important part of TBTST's Social Action Committee’s Mazon Project

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re- ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand- knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty. 32 NOVEMBER 2015 TEMPLE BETH TORAH SHA'ARAY TZEDEK CHESHVAN / KISLEV 5776 Yahrzeit Donations DONOR IN MEMORY OF DONOR IN MEMORY OF
