Im Wartburg von Ost nach West Einst Statussymbol des Arbeiter- und Bauernstaates, heute liebenswerter Gast auf Oldie-Treffen – und fit ist er auch noch Von Christoph Gajda Dröhnend schiebt sich die schöne neu asphaltierte Straße unter die Räder, das Summen des stets mitlaufenden Lüfterrades vor dem Kühler steigert sich in ein mitleidiges Heulen und der Dreizylinder- Zweitaktmotor will erst durch seine Drehmomententfaltung im hohen Drehzahlbereich beweisen, dass er in der Lage ist, mich in die viel zu weichen Sitze zu drücken. Gut dass es geradeaus geht, denn Seitenhalt fehlt dem Gestühl gänzlich. Gute Laune dennoch, denn die Technik funktioniert ausnahmsweise pannenfrei und zuverlässig. Einzig die Tatsache dass man noch über tausend Kilometer auszuhalten hat, könnte das perfekte Feeling jetzt noch trüben. Ja, der Balaton ist weit… Doch nix mit Balaton. Von wegen Urlaubsreise mit fernem Ziel und Erholung in Aussicht, wobei der Weg zum Ziel gehört, oder besser gesagt, dass Auto und Fahrer gesund am Ziel ankommen. Die Leute müssen früher wohl doch härter gewesen sein. Für mich heißt es nur, einmal quer durch Deutschland. Von Anhalt, über den Südharz, Thüringen, Hessen ins Rhein-Main-Gebiet. Moment mal! Daran wäre früher überhaupt nicht zu denken gewesen, zumindest nicht in Richtung Ost-West. Von daher bildet meine Reise doch eine kleine Besonderheit. Aus heutiger Sicht betrachtet sogar umso mehr, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich völlig auf Autobahnen verzichte und nach guter alter Sitte ohne Navi die Landstriche durchquere, an deren Straßen sich die wichtigsten Städte wie Perlen an einer Kette aneinander reihen. Der Wagen Wartburg TOURIST, wie sich die Vollheckvariante (auch Kombi genannt) des Wartburg ab 1968 nannte: ein Statussymbol in der DDR. -

Since 1994 it has its home in the rooms of the Wartburg Sparkasse´s Administration building at the street named Rennbahn. A select series beginning with the Wartburg Motor Carriage (1899) and ending with the Wartburg 1.3 in the early 1990ies documents over 100 year tradition of automobile production in Eisenach. Sportscars, Prototypes, and special variations of the cars produced in Eisenach are being prepared for the expansion of the existing exhibition. In this year took the symbolic groundbreaking for the exhibit in the “Automobile Welt Eisenach” took place. The exhibit in this new museum displays innovative style and diversity in development, mobility and technical advances since the automobile was created. It will be located in one of the original plant buildings (Number 2 - Werksgebäude 02) from 1935 an is going to show the technical history of the Automobile Plant Eisenach as well as the cultural, social and environmental impact of the automobile industry. -

Abstract : Automakers have been among the first western firms to enter Central and Eastern Europe. In automobile producti on and distribution, International Production Networks (IPNs) linking West and East Europe are emerging. The international networking strategies of the car manufacturers, however, show remarkable differences. Some rate the CEEC region primarily as a mark et, some as a production site, some try to aim at both. These differences are triggered by the domestic bargaining setting (the 'car complex') of these firms, by the dynamics of the internationalisation process itself, and by the reception in the host cou ntries. Four different types of cross -national production networks in Europe have developed in the course of the 1990s: frontrunner , follower, peripheral and lock -out networks . Dieses konnte infolge des Krieges erst ab 1950 als IFA F 9 im VEB Automobil- werk Zwickau in Serie gehen. Der Wartburg erhielt einen verlängerten Rahmen und eine viertürige, deutlich größere und schwungvoll geformte Karosserie. Die Motorleistung des Dreizylinders mit seinem anfänglichen Hubvo- lumen von 900 ccm betrug anfangs 37, ab 1961 40 PS. 1962 erhielt der im Rahmen der Modell- pfl ege weiter verbesserte Wartburg 1000 eine erneute Leistungsspritze, mit der das nun über 992 ccm verfügende Antriebsaggregat 45 PS zur Verfügung stellte. Neben der Limousine gab es zahlreiche, sehr attraktive Sonderauf- bauten wie die Luxus-Limousine, Camping-Li- mousine, zweisitziges Cabrio, Kombi, Sport und Hardtop-Roadster. Insgesamt wurden fast Modell: Wartburg 311/1000, Limousine 109.000 Einheiten des Typs 311 mit Einliter- Maschine hergestellt. Abgebildet ist eine 1963 Bauzeit: 1962 – 1965 gebaute viertürige Luxus-Limousine in zweifar- Motor: 3-Zylinder-/2-Takt-Reihen-Vergasermotor biger Lackierung. -

OSTALGIE: A QUIET CULTURAL POLITIC Clair Hopper HIST 459: Topics in Modern German History December 14, 2016 Hopper 1 Ostalgie: A Quiet Cultural Politic From 1945 through most of 1989, Germany stood divided. In November of 1989, Germany was divided no more. Though the fall of the Berlin Wall rendered East and West Germany one political unit, emotional reunification of the country was delayed. For several years there remained a Mauer im Kopf—wall in the head—of many Germans. A tangible discourse of difference stood between Ossis and Wessis, which from the beginning was coded in terms of difference in material culture and consumer goods. A particular strain of this material codification of Ossi-Wessi difference became known as Ostalgie, or nostalgia for the former East Germany. Especially in 2007-2010, Germans participated in a broad range of Ostalgic phenomena. For example, an online Ostprodukteshop still sells a myriad of Eastern products with such notable categories as “50 years of Trabant” and a category in which the symbol for the GDR’s Hero of Work award is on products from hats to liquor to “the official shower gel for heroic refreshment”.1 GDR-themed nightclubs and parties, as well as merchandise with the GDR-era traffic symbol Ampelmännchen, are popular allusions to the culture of the GDR.2,3 Film and television hearken back to the days of the GDR, and specialty stores sell Spreewald pickles and Spee detergent in the original packaging of the 1960s. By buying these products or consuming these media, Germans retroactively valorize the material and consumer culture of the GDR in the context of a reunified Germany that largely rejected Eastern culture. -

Basic motoring The Evolution of the Modern Ultralight Economy car. Honda Zest Preface I began writing this book because no one else has covered the subject comprehensively, there are a lot of books and web pages on individual models that go into minute often extremely boring details but there is nothing to link all of this class of car together that show how the modern ultralight economy car we use today has evolved. First I must explain what I mean by the rather long winded term ultralight economy car. The type of car or if you prefer automobile, that I refer to below can be classified today by many labels, minicar, economy car, city car, mini compact if you are from USA or an A-segment mini car if you are a European official. None of these describe exactly the type of car I have included in this text. Yes, they were economy cars but very small economy cars with an engine capacity range with some latitude; from 360 cc to 1000 cc. Some could be classed as mini or city cars but not all are and some could be classed as microcars, but they were and are all a relatively low cost form of transport for a great many millions of people around the world in the past and increasingly so today.
