The Carrières de Lumières’ new immersive digital exhibition presents Cézanne’s (1839-1906) masterpieces such as his still lifes of apples, the Card Players and the Large Bathers. A self-taught painter who produced 900 canvasses and 400 waterco- lours, Cézanne represents portraits, still lifes, landscapes, historical scenes … and painted multiple versions of the same subjects, ceaselessly experimenting with the possibilities of the pictorial material. Through a thematic, intimate and retrospective tour, this immersive exhi- bition reveals Cézanne’s inner torment, the strength of his constructions, his relationship with light and colour and his attachment to nature, which remains his great model, his obsessional reference. © Culturespaces Short programme Wassily Kandinsky, the Abstract Odyssey Spring 2021 to 2 January 2022 Direction and staging: Cutback under the artistic direction of Virginie Martin. A Culturespaces Digital Production The Carrières de Lumières present a ten-minute creation based on the works of the prolific and visionary artist Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). Painter-poet, art theoretician and founder of abstract art, Kandinsky transformed art history with his many compositions, now exhibited the world over. 6 Les Baux-de-Provence Tourist Office HERITAGE Kandinsky and music evenings 27 and 28 July This concert-conference associates the musical colours of the piano, violon and cello to “relate” the ties binding the Franco-German painter of Russian origin to music. Musical works by composers that he appreciated particularly – Mussorgsky, Scriabin, Debussy, Wagner, Schoenberg and Rachmaninoff – are interspersed with presentations mixing historical context, quotes from the artist and works that he designed himself for the stage in a spirit of “all-encompassing work”. Mozart and the stars 15 and 16 August Mozart and the stars takes you on a journey to the frontiers of the universe. By means of projections of images of the cosmos, the astro- physicist Hubert Reeves and the musical Ensemble Calliopée combine astronomy and music. Together, music and cosmological narration bring us to reflect on the evolution of the universe, the “chance and necessity” that governs it. Photo exhibition Kandinsky, pioneer of abstraction Mid-April to 14 November In the spring 2021, mirroring the programme at the Carrières de Lumières, the Château des Baux will offer visitors the opportunity to stroll freely through the life and works of the painter Wassily Kandinsky (1866– 1944). Father figure of modern art, his theoretical writings and pictural experi- ments opened the way to abstract art.     Yves Brayer 1907-1990 32 avenue Marceau 75008 Paris | +33 (0)1 42 61 42 10 | +33 (0)6 07 88 75 84 | [email protected] | galeriearyjan.com Yves Brayer 1907-1990 Biography Yves Brayer was a landscape painter who began his apprenticeship at the Academy of Montparnasse and the Grande Chaumière, before joining the Paris Fine Art School. He showed very young a strong personality and has been encouraged by Jean-Louis Forain to exhibit his works. As he was still student, he first exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1927, the state gave him a grant that allowed him to travel to Spain where the meeting with the Prado's Masters will impact his entire future works. After a stay in Morocco through a prize created by Marshall Lyautey, he gained the Great Prize of Rome in 1930. Spain first missed him, but the richness of the Italian life in the thirties finally charmed him. As soon as he came back in Paris, he exhibited at the Galerie Charpentier on Faubourg Saint Honoré, where the public discovered the authenticity and the virtuosity of this painter with strong and eccentric temperament. The year 1945 marked a new step in his work. Yves Brayer leaved Paris to a stay in Provence. There he realised that there were other harmonies beside architecture created by humans, there was the pure and wild nature. Soon he's get fascinated by the diversity of the Alpilles in South of France. From this time, he used to spend many months in Provence each year.

Before strolling through the streets of this stone vessel, let's stop for a moment to consider its geographical location and the highlights of its history. The village of Les Baux-de-Provence is located in the heart of the triangle Arles - Avignon - Salon-de-Provence, south of the Alpilles mountain range. As the etymology of the word Baux indicates - from the Provençal "baù" (pronounced "baou") "steep place" - the perched village of Baux-de-Provence dominates the plain from a fortified spur. Entirely carved out of limestone, here called "molasse", it dominates the southern plains, towards Arles and the Camargue. Its geographical situation allows observation and defense: it is both difficult to take because of its steep ledges which surround it, and easy to reach from the surrounding valleys. Thus, it was from the beginning a place very coveted by the man. Stempien, Jr. Between 1730 and about 1830, each large French city had, in general, three different marking devices:- 1) a simple departure mark for unpaid letters 2) a port paye mark for prepaid letters 3) a debourse mark for forwarded letters . 'l'hey are listed here in order of their scarcity: the first fairly common, the debourse mark much more scarce. The smaller post offices were never issued a debourse mark, while the medium-sized ones only received them after 1792 as a part of the general issue of marks with the new department num­ bers. During the Napoleonic period, they were also issued to sizable towns in annexed areas; this went hand in hand with the introduction there of French administrative procedures. In addition, many offices of the army postal sys­ tem were also issued with them, as the system during this period merely mim­ icked the civilian one. In Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, they continued to be used after the occupation had ended as a part of normal postal practice-one of the many legacies of the Napoleonic era to be found through­ out Europe. During the 1700's and first half of the 1800's, most mail was sent unpaid­ that is, the addressee paid the postage. Moreover, postage was calculated as a function of both distance and weight. These practices resulted in a great deal of record keeping, as each of these unpaid letters' in transit was carried as a debit on the account books of the central post office (Paris) until it was paid for.

Le laser de son regard semblait tomber de haut. Qui était-elle cette épouse d’un peintre célèbre, qui fut pendant cinquante ans toujours présente à ses côtés ? A la fois muse et modèle, compagne et amante, secrétaire, assistante, infirmière et agente de star, mais aussi chauffeur du maître - car il ne conduisait pas -, elle me rappelait Gala, l’épouse de Salvador Dali, qui comme elle remplissait tous les rôles au point que Dali, avec son humour surréaliste, l’appelait sa «béquille» et prétendait que sans elle il ne pouvait pas descendre un escalier ! Comme Gala, Hermione Brayer fut l’ombre inséparable de son grand homme.
