ISBN 978-0-931030-54-3 9 780931 030543 PREFACE It is a privilege and an honor to serve as the editor of the 2018 Proceedings of the pre-conference, competitive research, and special topics sessions presented at the 2018 annual Conference of the American Academy of Advertising held March 22-25 in New York, New York. This is the 60th anniversary of the conference and, as a whole, the conference was a great success. Overall, 188 competitive research papers and 14 special topics proposals were submitted for double-blind review. A total of 100 competitive papers (53%) and six special topics sessions (42%) were accepted. The special topics sessions were well coordinated by AAA President Tom Reichert of the University of South Carolina. Summaries of the special topics sessions presented at the conference are included in these proceedings. The 2018 proceedings also contain summaries and abstracts of the pre-conference and full papers and abstracts of competitive research sessions. The papers in this volume are organized in the order they appeared in the 2018 Conference Program. The conference would not be possible without the efforts of the 199 reviewers and those who served as session chairs, and moderators. I sincerely thank all those who volunteered their precious time and expertise and contributed to making this years AAA conference another outstanding event. I also want to acknowledge the sponsors who provided financial support, our wonderful Conference Manager Betty Djerf, and members of the AAA Executive Committee who were constant sources of support throughout the entire process of organizing the conference. The report was prepared mostly from the transcripts of the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) hearings on Modern Advertising Practices.' The basic structure of the industry as well as its role in marketing strategy is reviewed and*some interesting insights are exposed: The report is primarily concerned with investigating the current state of the art, being prompted mainly by the increased consumes: awareness of the nation and the FTC's own inability to set firm guidelines' for effectively and consistently dealing with the industry. The report points out how advertising does its job, and how it employs sophisticated motivational research and communications methods to reach the wide variety of audiences available. The case of self-regulation is presented with recommendationS that the FTC be particularly harsh in applying evaluation criteria tochildren's advertising. Selling Empowerment: A Critical Analysis of Femvertising Alexandra Rae Hunt Boston College Senior Communication Honors Thesis Dr. Michael Serazio Spring 2017 ii Abstract This thesis explores the impact of femvertising on representations of women, its relation to and conversation with third wave feminism as a growing social movement, and its extension of a brand’s dedication to corporate social responsibility. Feminist critical discourse analysis from a third wave perspective was used to conduct qualitative visual and textual analysis of three different femvertising campaigns: Dove’s “Campaign for Real Beauty,” Always’ “Like a Girl” campaign, and Pantene’s “Shine Strong” campaign. Although femvertising diversifies the representation of women and girls in the media by challenging restrictive beauty standards and damaging rhetoric, it fails to accurately represent or reference the third wave movement by shying away from the feminist label and omitting mentions of intersectionality, sexuality, and storytelling. In addition, in order for femvertising to seem genuine rather than manipulative, the campaign must reflect a sustained effort on behalf of the brand to empower women and girls through philanthropic efforts and organizational partnerships.     Why Google Dominates Advertising Markets Competition Policy Should Lean on the Principles of Financial Market Regulation Dina Srinivasan* * Since leaving the industry, and authoring The Antitrust Case Against Face- book, I continue to research and write about the high-tech industry and competition, now as a fellow with Yale University’s antitrust initiative, the Thurman Arnold Pro- ject. Separately, I have advised and consulted on antitrust matters, including for news publishers whose interests are in conflict with Google’s. This Article is not squarely about antitrust, though it is about Google’s conduct in advertising markets, and the idea for writing a piece like this first germinated in 2014. At that time, Wall Street was up in arms about a book called FLASH BOYS by Wall Street chronicler Michael Lewis about speed, data, and alleged manipulation in financial markets. The controversy put high speed trading in the news, giving many of us in advertising pause to appre- ciate the parallels between our market and trading in financial markets. Since then, I have noted how problems related to speed and data can distort competition in other electronic trading markets, how lawmakers have monitored these markets for con- duct they frown upon in equities trading, but how advertising has largely remained off the same radar. This Article elaborates on these observations and curiosities.
