Newhall wins architectural award 26th May 2011

HOMES designed by Richard Murphy Architects have again led the way with another architectural award for the Newhall development, Harlow. The latest accolade comes in the 2011 RIBA Awards.

05/07/2011 Everything Harlow Page 2 of 8

The homes form part of North Chase at Newhall which consists of 127 homes in a mix of apartments, townhouses, detached houses and flexible live-work units. North Chase forms a key function of the master planner’s strategy to recreate a market town, by providing the first part of Newhall’s central hub with the shops and restaurant elements necessary for a successful community. The judges wrote: "There is an optimism at Newhall that attempts to create communities that look beyond the ubiquitous ‘executive homes’ surrounded by suburban gardens and a car to mark your front door.? "The development of the Studio REAL masterplan places housing generally at right angles to the roads, creating walled lanes. Richard Murphy builds on his idea using largely single aspect houses where the blind back wall of each house helps to create the enclosure for a private walled garden for its neighbour. "This allows the garden to have a direct relationship to the living space without being overlooked, yet still retains a feeling of space. "This is precisely the sort of thinking that should be encouraged from other housing."

MS branch celebrates success 26th May 2011

A REPORT on the past year was given to more than 70 people who attended the annual meeting of the East Herts and West Essex branch of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Retiring chairman Mark Gammage spoke of a number of achievements in the year particularly the enlargement of the MS Support Team giving assistance to the MS community. It is estimated there are more than 1,000 people with MS in the area. Additionally the branch had been working hard to provide supplementary specialist-led physiotherapy and exercise for people with MS and it is anticipated this should become available within a month or two. The branch donated £8,000 to the MS National Centre for its programme of research into MS. This money is surplus to the funds the branch has raised to provide its own programme of services. The cheque was received by MS Society Operations Department staff member Mary Lowthian, Guest speaker at the meeting at Hatfield Heath Village Hall was consultant neurologist, Dr Mohammed Sharief, from Hospital, who spoke about ‘Emerging Treatments for MS’ detailing the prospects of a future cure and eventual prevention of this debilitating neurological condition. He feels that having spent 25 years in his work with MS this is the most promising time he has experienced and that research is rapidly coming closer to finding a cure. Branch vice-chairman Peter ‘Snowy’ Evans, and his wife, Maggie, who is also a branch committee member, were surprised when Mr Gammage presented them each with the society’s merit award for exceptional service, the ‘Shining Star’ award. Mr Gammage thanked all the branch’s volunteers who work tirelessly to raise funds and support those affected by MS. For more about the work of the branch or how to get involved, ring branch volunteer co- ordinator Peter 'Snowy' Evans on 01277 363034.

Hospice seeks new trustees 23rd May 2011

ST Clare Hospice is seeking new trustees to join its Board of Directors. St Clare - which serves communities from Harlow, in the south to in the north and from Bishop's Stortford in the west to in the east - is governed by a panel of unpaid trustees who are selected according to their individual skills and experience, the relevance of these to St Clare's activities and their ability to challenge and support their counterparts on the Board. The directors, under a chief executive officer, are responsible for the day-to-day management of the hospice and its services. The trustees monitor the management of the hospice through a number of governance committees each covering a separate directorate or activity of the hospice (for example building, clinical, finance etc). The committees, chaired by appropriately experienced trustees, usually consist of two or three trustees and the lead executive in the discipline being monitored. The governance committees meet once, sometimes twice, a quarter during office hours and report to the Trustee Board which normally meets quarterly outside office hours. Currently vacancies and succession planning require new trustees especially with financial, fundraising, medical or retailing backgrounds. For more information, contact the Chairman of Trustees, Michael Chapman DL, at Stone Barton, Hastingwood Road, Hastingwood, Harlow, Essex, CM17 9JX, visit the hospice's website or email Sheila Jones, the Clerk to the Trustees, at sheila.jones@stclarehospice,org.uk

MP fights for lower fuel prices 23rd May 2011

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon is calling for a backbench Parliamentary debate on the cost of fuel. He has also been asked by FairFuelUK to head up a new cross-party committee in the House of Commons on the issue as part of his new role as Parliamentary Champion of the Fair Fuel Campaign. Mr Halfon has already met with representatives from the FairFuelUK Campaign, including the Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association, and will now raise the issue with big energy companies and the Government. Mr Halfon said: "I will be seeking an explanation as to why the pump price of fuel has hardly dropped despite the significant fall in oil prices." He added: "We urgently need transparency. The oil price is falling but hard-pressed British motorists are still paying inflated prices at the pump. "That's why I will be writing today to all the major energy companies, to ask if they will lower their prices across the country." FairFuelUK spokesman Peter Carroll has welcomed Mr Halfon's involvement in the campaign. He said: "This is a tremendous step forward in the fight for a fair price for fuel. "We are pleased Robert Halfon is prepared to add his voice to our campaign. "We are even more delighted at his support for the formation of an all-party group to endorse the fact that fuel prices and fuel duty stay high on the political agenda."

Healthy lifestyle course for children 20th May 2011

A FREE, fun and healthy lifestyle programme for Harlow children starts next month. With one in three children in Harlow above a healthy weight the MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!) programme aims to help families become fitter, healthier and happier. The eight-week after school programme, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and Mark Hall School, will run twice a week at Mark Hall Sports Centre, from June 6. Claire Spencer, MEND’s programme manager for West Essex Community Health Services, said: "We all lead such hectic lives that eating healthily can sometimes drop off the priority list. "At MEND, families learn how they can make small changes to get back on a healthier track. "Kids love the fun activities and games, while the parents tell us that they enjoy learning about healthy eating and swapping tips with other parents. "As well as losing weight, kids leave the programme with more energy and a boost in self- esteem." MP questions need for Census 18th May 2011

HARLOW MP Robert Halfon has questioned whether the national Census is really necessary saying the cost of the questionnaire could have been better spent. Mr Halfon was among the MPs who debated the Census during a Commons Public Administration Select Committee when members questioned the UK Statistics Authority (UKSA). Speaking after the meeting, Mr Halfon said: "Whilst I have great respect for UKSA - particularly its independence from Government - I do have issues with the national Census. "It is somewhat authoritarian to compel every householder in the UK to fill it out, to make them divulge their personal details and to threaten us with fines - or even imprisonment - if we don't comply. "Moreover it is wrong to make veiled threats - as certain adverts did - that if the census is not filled out, areas of the country, might not get their public spending allocation. This is patently not the case." Mr Halfon added: "There is also the question as whether a costly and compulsory census is necessary. "The Coalition Government have said this census will most probably be the last. If that is the case why was it necessary to have a census this time around? "In other work done by UKSA they do sample surveys with much smaller numbers of people. "Why is it not possible to do this instead of the nationwide census? "I filled in my Census because I have to obey the law but I felt uncomfortable about divulging so many details to the machinery of the state. "I suspect many others did as well. The cost of the Census to the taxpayer is huge - money that could be otherwise spent on vital services."

Town benefits from arts initiatives 10th May 2011

TWENTY-one affordable artists’ studios and a new educational programme for primary school pupils are just two of the many art initiatives taking place in Harlow. Last September saw the launch of a new programme of art designed to stimulate activity in Harlow Town Centre during difficult economic times. The programme was launched with the official opening of Gatehouse Arts, a partnership project between Harlow Renaissance, Essex County Council, Harlow Town Centre Partnership, Harlow Council and ACAVA providing studio space for artists as well as supporting their professional development. The studios, which make use of previously empty shop and office premises in the town centre, have far exceeded expectations and now provide valuable resource for 29 artists in 21 studios producing a wide variety of excellent work. To support this initiative four part-time jobs have been created - programme coordinator, exhibitions coordinator, schools and community programme coordinator and open studios coordinator. These positions have all been filled by local artists involved in the programme. Exhibitions in the Gatehouse gallery have shown the work produced by the resident artists and also work created in schools and community based projects. The Carve Up show (May 21 until June 23), will enable residents to see the work produced in a series of workshops reflecting Harlow’s unique status as a Sculpture Town. Community members of all ages have also been involved in the programme with more than 90 primary school students from Henry Moore School learning soap carving skills, young people from the Youth Café creating carved breezeblock sculptures and a group of adults attending workshops at Parndon Mill Gallery tackling oak. A new art club for the over 65s has been set up and demonstrates the creativity and imagination of older residents. There have been two Open Studios events where residents have been invited to meet the artists and witness the success of this project. Gatehouse Arts next opens its doors for Open Studios from 11am-5pm on Saturday, May 21, and Sunday, May 22. Councillor Jeremy Lucas, county council cabinet member for heritage, culture and the arts, said: "We’re delighted the Gatehouse Arts project as a whole continues to be such a success by bringing the arts into the community as well as providing the opportunity for local artists to be supported as they develop their business skills. Duncan Smith, artistic director for ACAVA said: "Harlow is known for its artistic heritage with its exceptional sculpture collection and it is a pleasure to have been able to provide a valuable resource to the communities of Harlow as well as rising artistic talent to support their professional development."

ST Clare Hospice is seeking people to take part in a fundraising trek in Peru between May 5 and 14 next year. The hospice is organising the Inca Trail trek which is rated amongst the ten best trekking routes on earth and boasts stunning scenery, ancient Inca ruins and diverse ecological zones. The ultimate destination is Machu Picchu - the "Lost City" of the Incas - one of the world’s most fascinating and important archaeological finds. Other highlights include the historical town of Cusco, the Sacred Valley, the Inca site and market town of Pisac, the hot springs of Aguas Calientes and the capital city of Lima. Ben Millard, from Bishop’s Stortford, previously completed the trek in aid of the hospice. He said "Trekking the Inca Trail was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. "Every day presented a new challenge and taught me a bit more about myself. I made some wonderful friends and saw some amazing sights. The trekking was often hard going, but with every peak we reached we were treated to another spectacular view, views that not many people will ever be lucky enough to enjoy. "Peru is an amazing country, Cusco a truly wonderful city, and Machu Picchu one of the greatest architectural wonders in the world. "I would recommend the trek to anyone and everyone. It is tough, but the reward is worth the effort, as is the knowledge that by taking part you are helping St Clare's Hospice." For more details, ring Emma on 01303 862996 or email [email protected] .

Outbreak sparks measles warning 5th May 2011

HEALTH bosses have issued a measles warning following an outbreak in France with parents advised to protect their children with the MMR immunisation. More than 3,700 cases have been reported in France in January and February. The UK has a similar-sized population to France and there have been 193 confirmed cases between January and March this year. Head teachers of local schools have been alerted to the outbreak. Dr Pam Hall, Deputy Director of Public Health with NHS West Essex, said: "Parents of children who may be travelling to mainland Europe for school trips or holidays are advised that there may be an increased risk of acquiring measles. "They should ensure that their children have been fully vaccinated, and seek MMR immunisation from their GP if required. "Two doses of MMR vaccine at least one month apart are required to provide protection." In the UK following ten years of low uptake of MMR vaccine, there are school pupils who remain unvaccinated or are incompletely vaccinated and are therefore vulnerable. In west Essex, about 91.5 per cent of two-year-olds and 85 per cent of five-year-olds are up to date with their MMR immunisations.

Crews tackle blaze in outbuildings 3rd May 2011

GAS cylinders have been involved in a blaze which broke out in a shed and outbuildings in Hastingwood. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were called to Mill Street at 5.45pm this evening (Tuesday) where a shed and outbuildings measuring 25m x 25m in the back garden of a property were well alight. Initially two appliances were sent but the officer in charge requested an additional appliance for water supplies. Firefighting operations were hindered by five gas cylinders which were involved in the fire. Crews from Harlow and Epping took about an hour-and-a-quarter to deal with the blaze which completely destroyed the outbuildings and damaged a tractor inside. A fire service investigation will be carried out to establish the cause.

Engaged couple celebrate at abseil 1st May 2011

A COUPLE who got engaged at the top of the Church Langley water tower have returned 12 months on to celebrate - and complete their second descent from the 110ft structure. Derek Gatfield went down on one knee at the top of the tower a year ago, and girlfriend Lucy Fullick said 'yes'. And so 12 months on the couple returned to celebrate the anniversary, take part for a second time. Lucy said: "Most couples celebrate by going out for a meal - we go off the top of a tower." Reflecting on the special moment a year ago, Lucy said: "Derek proposed to me at the top. It was a complete surprise. He went down on one knee and I said 'yes' and we've come back this year to celebrate." The couple, from Bishop's Stortford, plan to marry next summer - and intend to take part in each abseil event to celebrate the anniversary of their engagement. Some 200 people took part in this year's event, organised by the Rotary Club of Harlow Tye. A host of local charities benefit from the two-day fundraiser, with local causes this year including the Epping Forest District Council chairman's charities, Home-Start Harlow, Multiple Sclerosis and Hatfield Broad Oak Under -Fives Nursery.
