Prehistoric cultures of North America, from late Pleistocene to the occupation of the continent by Europeans. Origin and development of cultural patterns traced and current problems are examined. Course Overview: Prehistoric cultures of North America are discussed from the peopling of the New World during the late Pleistocene to the occupation of the continent by Europeans. The origin and development of specific cultures is traced in several areas including the Eastern Woodlands, Southwest, West Coast, Great Basin, and Plains. This course will combine lectures with weekly labs. The objective of the labs is to expose students to original archaeological reports and articles, which will be discussed as group exercises. Student Objectives: The course has four objectives: 1. To provide students with general knowledge of the prehistory of North America. 2. To provide hands-on experience for each student in the recognition of basic attributes used in the analysis of different materials classes. 3. To teach students how each material class may be used to address specific research questions of current archaeological interest. 4. To provide students with the background to critically evaluate how archaeological analyses are conducted and what some of the major problems are in executing these analyses. Evaluation Criteria: There will be two exams, a midterm and a non comprehensive final. In addition, each undergraduate student will read one monographs (from the list below) and prepare a 4 to 6 page critique. -
Late Woodland Settlement and Subsistence in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan
LATE WOODLAND SETTLEMENT AND SUBSISTENCE IN THE EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN By Sean Barron Dunham A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Anthropology - Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT LATE WOODLAND SETTLEMENT AND SUBSISTENCE IN THE EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA OF MICHIGAN By Sean Barron Dunham This research revisits the debate surrounding Late Woodland subsistence practices in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The Late Woodland period in the Upper Great Lakes region (ca. A.D. 600 to 1600) is often characterized through models emphasizing the intensive use of a single, primary key resource, particularly maize, fall spawning fish, or wild rice. For example, current Late Woodland subsistence models for northern Michigan focus on the intensive harvest, creation of surplus, and consequent storage of fall spawning fish as the cornerstone of the settlement and subsistence strategy. New data suggests that the dominant settlement and subsistence model is incomplete, lacks explanatory value, and requires revision. This study tests the hypothesis that a suite of potential resources was both present and utilized, allowing for a more flexible set of strategies, i.e. one based upon multiple rather than a single primary resource. Archaeological evidence, ethnographic data, and pilot study results reveal that acorns, maize, and wild rice are likely resources to be incorporated into such a strategy; all can be harvested and stored in the late summer or fall as a buffer against a poor fish harvest. Each, however, also has spatial, environmental, and temporal constraints with implications bearing on archaeological site locations as well as the evidence from the sites themselves. -

ANTHROPOLOGY The Littlefork Burial: New Light on Old Copper JACK STEINBRING* ABSTRACT - A richly furnished child burial of late Old Copper affiliation in Northern Minnesota is described. The mortuary offerings include a pair of large, decorated bone harpoons, and a pair of diagnostic Old Copper projectile points attached to dart shafts. The primary burial is flexed in a shallow pit with evidence of red ochre. Typological comparisons suggest a tentative date of 1,000 to 750 B.C. USDI/NPS NRHP Multiple Property Documentation Form Woodland Tradition in Minnesota (Page 148) F. ASSOCIATED PROPERTY TYPES Five property types are listed for this MPDF: habitation sites; resource procurement and processing sites; special-use sites; and mortuary sites, subdivided into mound and nonmound mortuary sites. It is assumed that the initial or Phase II field investigations at the site have been sufficient to describe it in terms of size, types of artifacts and ecofacts, artifact density, presence of single or multiple components, presence or absence of features or the potential for features or ecofacts, or other site characteristics. These property types address inferred site function, and the assignment of a site to one of these site types should serve to focus research questions, not to preclude further analysis into the range of activities that might have taken place at the site. In addition, one site might reflect aspects of multiple property types (for example a nonmound burial within a habitation site). In general, Woodland properties in Minnesota will be evaluated under National Register Criterion D, sites that have yielded, or may be likely to yield, information important in prehistory, and to address research questions such as those identified above in the statewide themes or for each complex. Specific information for Criterion D is discussed below. In some instances, Criteria A or C might also be relevant. Criterion A (sites that are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history) might be relevant for a site that was important in the history of Minnesota archaeology, such as the type site for a complex or phase, or a site where critical information has been acquired (such as Gull Lake Dam 21CA27, or Petaga Point 21ML11). -

(MSG) to perform a cultural resources survey for the Ludington Pumped Storage Project (LPSP). The LPSP includes the approximately 1,500-acre hydroelectric facility in Mason County, and a 1.8-acre satellite recreation site in Ottawa County.1 The LPS facility (LPSF) was constructed between 1969 and 1972 and is jointly owned and operated by Consumers and Detroit Edison (DTE). Its current operating license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) expires on June 30, 2019. The project Owners (Consumers and DTE) are using FERC’s Integrated Licensing Process (ILP) to prepare a re-licensing application. -

The method of measurement and treatment of data are the same as those described in the introductions to Michigan lists III and IV. Saginaw, Michigan 5280 ± 300 Northern white-cedar log from floor of a buried forest, found in a clay pit being excavated to make a private fish pond (43° 25' N Lat, 84° 00' W Long), Saginaw County, Michigan. Sample, probably drowned by rising Lake Nipissing at alt 572 ft, was buried with other forest materials beneath 18 ft of silty clay, in an ancient erosion notch in the bank of Tittabawasse River. The overlying silt shows no clear indication of intervening dry periods and suggests continual filling of the pond. Coll. August 1960 and subm. by Mark Papworth, Museum of Anthropology, Univ. of 'Michigan. Comment: date suggests that Nipissing rose rapidly and evenly to 605-ft level.
