Sant Agostino
(078/31) Sant’Agostino in Campo Marzio Sant'Agostino is an important 15th century minor basilica and parish church in the rione Sant'Eustachio, not far from Piazza Navona. It is one of the first Roman churches built during the Renaissance. The official title of the church is Sant'Agostino in Campo Marzio. The church and parish remain in the care of the Augustinian Friars. The dedication is to St Augustine of Hippo. [2] History: The convent of Sant’Agostino attached to the church was founded in 1286, when the Roman nobleman Egidio Lufredi donated some houses in the area to the Augustinian Friars (who used to be called "Hermits of St Augustine" or OESA). They were commissioned by him to erect a convent and church of their order on the site and, after gaining the consent of Pope Honorius IV, this was started. [2] Orders to build the new church came in 1296, from Pope Boniface VIII. Bishop Gerard of Sabina placed the foundation stone. Construction was to last nearly one and a half century. It was not completed until 1446, when it finally became possible to celebrate liturgical functions in it. [2] However, a proposed church for the new convent had to wait because of its proximity to the small ancient parish church of San Trifone in Posterula, dedicated to St Tryphon and located in the Via della Scrofa. It was a titular church, and also a Lenten station. In 1424 the relics of St Monica, the mother of St Augustine, were brought from Ostia and enshrined here as well. -

It argues that antinomians, by rejecting traditional concepts of social authority, created divisive political factions within the godly party while it waged war against King Charles I. At the same time in New England, antinomians organized a political movement that called for a democratic commonwealth to limit the power of ministers and magistrates in religious and civil affairs. When this program collapsed in Massachusetts, hundreds of colonists returned to an Old England engulfed by civil war. Joining English antinomians, they became lay preachers in London, New Model Army soldiers, and influential supporters of the republican Levellers. This dissertation also connects the study of republican political thought to the labor history of the first British Empire. -

SCHNEPPER Dissertation Director: Alastair Bellany My dissertation, “Jonas Cast Up at London: The Experience of New World Churches in Revolutionary England,” offers a completely new way of approaching the history of religious struggle and debate during the English Revolution--blending the history of religious polemic and identity-formation with the history of the book and of print culture, and, for the first time, placing these epochal struggles over church government and religious freedom within a dynamic Atlantic context. With over one hundred printed books and pamphlets as my research base, my project uncovers the hitherto under-explored importance of English Atlantic colonial churches on the fiery debates over further reformation of the Church of England, and reveals a bustling world of preachers, polemicists and printers who refashioned the experiences of religious life in the Americas for English readers eager to recreate their own church according to what they took to be God’s will. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While this dissertation bears my name, an entire village participated in its creation. -

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (1591-1666), usually called Guercino, was one of the leading Italian painters of the seventeenth century. His nickname (literally, squinter) is supposed to have been devised by Marchese Enzo Bentivoglio, a prominent connoisseur and lifelong friend. Guercino's earliest paintings are in an intensely dramatic Baroque style, but, by the mid-1620s, he had developed a classicizing manner. This intuitive response is validated by a careful analysis of his paintings. Guercino fused spirituality and homoerotic desire in many of his paintings of religious subjects. Although Guercino's professional career is much more thoroughly documented than that of virtually any other seventeenth-century European painter, little about his personal life is known with certainty, except for the fact that he never married. -

It examines the controversies generated by the claims made for individual and collective conscience during a period in which political and ecclesiastical authorities were subject to challenge in both countries. It focuses on arguments for and against armed resistance; the promulgation and subscription of the Solemn League and Covenant; key ecclesiological debates at the Westminster Assembly; and the imposition of the Engagement Oath. -

It shows that institutional and ecclesiological differences, and the interactions between Scottish and English ideas, played a central role in the development of political thought and that the relationship between belief and action was a key element of many of these debates. Earlier work has either used Scottish examples to supplement an English narrative or, by over- emphasising a shared protestant culture, has stripped important ideas and arguments of the distinctive contexts from which they emerged and in which they were publicised. -
