Arts, Spaces, Identities Contesting French Aesthetics of Space and Nature Enjoyment in Moroccan Travel Writing th in the 19 Century Ahmed Idrissi Alami* Purdue University Abstract In their travel writings about Europe in the 19th century, Moroccan visitors compare and contrast what they see of the European artistic designs and aesthetic values with experiences from their own native cultures. In this paper, I analyze the discourse and rhetoric about the enjoyment of nature, landscape design and leisure aesthetics as explored in the travel writing of the Moroccan traveler al‐‘Amrāwī in his travelogue Tuḥfat al‐Malik al‐ʿAzīz bimamlakat Bārīz (1860). Here we see a significant engagement between the periphery and the center, from outlying ‘pre‐modern’ cultures to the epicenter of Western culture and modernity. -

Most events were organized through six different College Spotlights titled: The Taste of Morocco; Experiencing Moroccan Visual Arts; Multiple Literacies in Morocco; Conflict Management, Peacebuilding, and Development Challenges in Morocco, Moroccan Cultural Festival; and Moroccan Solar Tree. -

The project was funded by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS through a grant designated for undertaking MoT analyses in the Middle East and North Africa. The Persistence of the Andalusian Identity in Rabat, Morocco Abstract This thesis investigates the problem of how an historical identity persists within a community in Rabat, Morocco, that traces its ancestry to Spain. Called Andalusians, these Moroccans are descended from Spanish Muslims who were first forced to convert to Christianity after 1492, and were expelled from the Iberian peninsula in the early seventeenth century. I conducted both ethnographic and historical archival research among Rabati Andalusian families. There are four main reasons for the persistence of the Andalusian identity in spite of the strong acculturative forces of religion, language, and culture in Moroccan society. First, the presence of a strong historical continuity of the Andalusian heritage in North Africa has provided a dominant history into which the exiled communities could integrate themselves. Second, the predominant practice of endogamy, as well as other social practices, reinforces an intergenerational continuity among Rabati Andalusians. Third, the Andalusian identity is a single identity that has a complex range of sociocultural contexts in which it is both meaningful and flexible. -

Ce bassin, du moins pour l’ethnographe, n’est pas un simple concept. Il est, l’existence et l’essence à la fois, dans la mesure où il constitue le contexte de l’expérience humaine et son cadre de vie. On se trouve ainsi, engagé avec tout ce qui est autour de lui par une série de relations diverses et qui correspond aussi à une nécessité sociale par le biais de l’appropriation. Le bassin, concept de base en géographie, offre l’image d’une homogénéité topographiquement émiettée, morcelée en plusieurs parties dont la définition et le nombre sont clairs. Il y a d’abord l’insularité, un des prin- cipaux traits géographiques du bassin. Les monographies éludant ce phénomène historico-géographique primordial, évoquent l’Oued Noun comme composé de cinq grandes chapelets d’oasis que l’on peut dénommer groupements oasiens. Par sa richesse écologique et anthropique, par son allongement de la montagne anti atlasique à l’océan atlantique, le bassin permet à la civilisation de la rive N-O saharienne de se développer comme un système complet, comme un monde en soi. Aussi, cette question de l’insularité touche directement à la géopolitique. -

Although extensive studies have been published on the Arabic theory on the genesis of European vernacular poetry as well as on the influence of the troubadours on Medieval English poetry, no serious study, as far as I can ascertain, has been published showing the link between Hispano-Arabic and Middle English poetry. This thesis, I hope, should make a specific contribution to the field of comparative studies in Medieval European lit erature by demonstrating that some Hispano-Arabic elements can be seen in Middle English lyrics. The· thesis first discusses the impact of Medieval Arabic culture on Medieval Europe and the means through which the transmission of Arabic knowledge was effected. In it I review the theories on the origins of Romance vernacular poetry and of the courtly love tradition and examine the characteristics of Hispano-Arabic poetry, showing its influence on Romance vernacular poetries, especially on the Proven9al. -

Dissertation Advisor: Osama Abi-Mershed, Ph.D. ABSTRACT Over the last several decades, a growing number of historians have conceptualized the Atlantic world as an explanatory analytical framework, useful for studying processes of interaction and exchange. Stretching temporally from the 15th into the 19th century, the Atlantic world framework encompasses more than simply the history of four continents that happen to be geographically situated around what we now recognize as the Atlantic basin. It offers instead a means for examining and understanding the transformative impacts that arose from the interaction of European, African, and American cultures following the European transatlantic voyages of the 15th and 16th centuries. Though it has not been extensively studied from this perspective, during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries Morocco possessed geopolitical characteristics that uniquely situated it within not only the Islamic world, but the developing Atlantic world as well. This study considers Morocco’s involvement in the early Atlantic world by examining three specific phases of its involvement. The first phase lasts approximately one hundred years and begins with the Portuguese invasion of Ceuta in 1415, considered by some to mark the beginning of European overseas expansion. -

As part of eroticism the repertory of ʿaita—a genre of sung poetry from the Moroccan plains and plateaus traditionally performed by professional female singer-dancers [shikhat] and nowadays categorised as popular music [shʿabi]—‘L-ʿalwa’ presents an interesting case study through which it is possible to analyse the porosity between local constructions of the sacred and the secular in relation to a genre which is not explicitly associated with the sacred or with sacred performances. -

Society is replete with authoritative voices. Proceeding from figureheads such as political or religious leaders, from social fixtures such as education systems and economic structures, or from texts whether sacred, academic, or literary, these voices— often imperceptibly—determine our relationship to the world around us. By creating and maintaining discourses that shape our notion of what is natural, logical, and privileged, authority permits the creation of hierarchy. This seductive condition passes from one society to the others it intersects, and is inherited by even those most subjugated because of it. Under the rule of French colonization, Moroccans and Algerians were forced to adapt their self-identities to the one designated to them by the French; one that, in form and in practice, yielded racism and repression. The burden of this discourse was thrown off as a result of the Algerian revolution and subsequent decolonization, but the condition persisted, as the new Arab authorities assumed the responsibility for the dissemination of hierarchical discourse. The pursuit of national identity was termed ‘Arabization,’ thus excluding from collective redefinition the Berbers, a people indigenous to the region. Their language and culture have encountered repression and discrimination in the decades following independence, despite their prevalence and historical presence in both countries. While the Berbers have been the focus of Western academic reports, ethnographies, and efforts at preservation, their position as ever the ‘studied’ reinforces their position as one constantly bound to be defined by another with more authority than they. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Jews, Music-Making, and the Twentieth Century Maghrib A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Christopher Benno Silver 2017 © Copyright by Christopher Benno Silver 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Jews, Music-Making, and the Twentieth Century Maghrib by Christopher Benno Silver Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Sarah Abrevaya Stein, Chair From the early twentieth century and through at least mid-century, indigenous North African Jews came to play an outsized role as music-makers and music-purveyors across the Maghrib. In Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, all under French rule until the middle of the twentieth century, Jewish vocalists and instrumentalists, record label artistic directors and concessionaires, commercial agents, and sonic impresarios utilized the phonograph and recording technology to safeguard and promote traditional music –– described alternately as “Arab,” “Muslim,” and “Andalusian” –– and to pioneer popular musical forms mixed in style and language (often blending Arabic with French). Those forms produced an emerging realm of popular culture between World War I and World War II. ii Jewish prominence in music was challenged during the interwar period. That challenge emanated from a set of French officials and Muslim elites, who were uneasy with minority overrepresentation in a heritage increasingly considered in national terms and increasingly understood as the exclusive domain of the majority. With the fall of the French Third Republic and the rise of the Vichy Regime during the Second World War, Maghribi Jewish musicians in North Africa and those in metropolitan France were further sidelined and silenced –– although never completely. -
